I come from a medical family. My grandparents and parents are all traditional Chinese doctors.
When I was young, my grandparents often told me some stories about some great traditional Chinese doctors such as Zhang Zhongjing and Sun Simiao. I knew about the story about Li Shizhen from my grandfather.
Li Shizhen, who was born in Hubei Province in 1518, was a great medical scientist. And he is known as “the saint of medicine (药圣)” in Chinese history. And his work, Bencao Gangmu, is one of the best medical books. Till now, it is very popular.
When Li Shizhen was young, he was interested in traditional Chinese medicine and he began to read medical books. He found many mistakes in those books. Then Li Shizhen decided to write a new medical book. He travelled everywhere to look for herbs (药草) and do research. He also talked with many farmers, doctors and patients to get the correct information about herbs. He even tested herbs by himself and almost lost his life many times. Li Shizhen collected over 1,890 herbs and he recorded them in his book, Bencao Gangmu.
It took Li Shizhen about forty years to finish the book Bencao Gangmu. After that, Li Shizhen passed away at the age of 75.
“The most important thing in Li Shizhen's life was to cure people's illnesses. This is doctors' duty. I know you also want to be a doctor, so you must know this,” my grandfather said to me.

Dear Mark,
You must be excited about coming to China soon. Let me give you some suggestions about Chinese customs.
When you are eating at the table, it's impolite to stick your chopsticks into your food. You're supposed to put them on your plate or bowl. Don't point at anyone with your chopsticks. Don't make noise when you drink your soup.
In the house, you're supposed to speak to the old politely. When you greet the host and the other family members, you shouldn't kiss or hug them. Instead, you're supposed to shake hands with them.
When you go out with people, you should tell the host where you are going and who you are going with. It's important to come back home by 10:00 p.m. or the host will worry about you.
Have a good trip and I look forward to meeting you soon!
Best wishes!
