It was a great pleasure for the family to move to a house with a very big garden. Betty and Tony could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Betty went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken. “It must have flown into the window. ” Tony said when his sister Betty called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck on the window. ”
“Poor thing!”Betty said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows ” They wondered. Finally they knew the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection (倒影)of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
“Something has to be done to save the birds.” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains (窗帘)across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk. March 22 marks World Water Day. It celebrates water and draws people’s attention on those who are living without enough safe water. You may think that waterscarcitymainly has to do with a lack of precipitation (降水), but it is also now a problem in southern China, an area in which it rains often.
In December 2021, people in Shenzhen found that water began to run more slowly from their taps (水龙头). The government said the city was facing its most serious water shortage (短缺) ever.
Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty”, The Paper pared with northern areas, southern China has more rain and is close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water
In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters (立方米) of water each year, 1/12 of the country’s average (平均水平). According to the United Nations, it is an “absolute water shortage” (极度缺水) when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
Climate change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong province depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up.
Because of climate change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Xizang. The snow has long been the source of water for many parts of China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently (有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to keep water so the water goes into the sea.

A.Solution. B.Pollution. C.Shortage.

A.It has less clean drinking water than North China.
B.Water pollution is the largest water problem.

My parents taught me not to waste food. My mom always found ways to make leftovers (剩余食物) taste good. I went to Ilan to learn about some of their special foods. As I was there, I learned about the food and the history of the area. I learned that they don’t waste food, either, and they use leftovers!
Many years ago, there was not enough food for everyone. People learned to cook and eat almost everything. They had to think of ways to make special dishes. One of these dishes is kao zha. It’s made with leftovers like meat, soup, oil and fat. That might not sound very good, but it does taste good. Today, kao zha is a special dish at big banquets (宴会).
Another famous dish is called zao bing. It’s made with fruit, meat and other things. I really liked it! But I didn’t want to eat too much. It has a lot of fat in it.
I smelled something burning and I saw smoke, so I found another special food of the Ilan area─duck meat. The duck meat is put in a big oven (炉子) to cook it. Smoke keeps the meat fresh. I don’t usually eat meat, but this duck meat was delicious! It tasted sweet.
Ilan is a great place with delicious food. I hope I can come back again!
