Every so often, 31-year-old Chen Jiawen, a product designer at a technology company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, sets aside a day for herself called Unplug Day. On this day, she disconnects from the digital world and focuses on real-life experiences. In the morning, she prepares breakfast for her sell while listening to music. In the afternoon, she wanders through the park with friends and in the evening, they enjoy a meal together without touching their phones, engaged in deep conversation. Upon returning home, she spends the evening reading.
Chen started the plan as she often felt “interrupted” by technology, citing moments of distraction (分心) like pop-up notifications, ring tones and repetitious warnings leading her to check for new messages, and feelings of information overload. “Occasionally disconnecting from the network is like feeding the brain a day of vegetarian food,” Chen said. Unplug Day is part of her plan to combat information overload from overusing the phone and to rebuild her focus. In addition to this, she has started replacing short videos with longer ones and prioritizes reading in-depth news articles or books. “When friends gather and everyone is glued to their phones, it makes me uncomfortable,” Chen said, adding that burying herself in social media prevented her from completing work as planned, leading to psychological burdens and a decreasing focus.
It’s become a common situation where modern people might unconsciously use the time spent waiting at traffic lights to watch a short video or constantly check out a trending topic upon receiving a push notification from an app. To prevent this sense of being “controlled” by mobile devices, some young Chinese like Chen are experimenting with digital minimalism and are discovering positive outcomes from their efforts. Technology should bring us joy, not reduce the time we spend with family or increas our anxiety. Our goal is to control technology rather than letting it control us.
4. What can we learn about Unplug Day
A. It is a day for reading. B. It is a day without phones.
C. It is a day away from the Internet. D. It is a day to spend with friends.
5. What does the underlined word “combat” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Learn. B. Cancel. C. Obtain. D. Prevent.
6. What is the direct impact of over-involvement in social media on Chen Jiawen
A. Tasks’ delays. B. Stress from peers.
C. Mental problems. D. A decreased ability.
7. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph
A. Enjoy the benefits of technology.
B. Decrease the time spent on digital devices.
C. Remove the apps informing new messages.
D. Watch longer videos while waiting at traffic lights.
C
A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart discase when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen, an associate professor at Northwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol (胆固醇) in a person’s daily food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. “I’m not saying that people should take them completely out of their food,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.”
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. “Cholesterol’s role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,” said Dennis Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point,” he added.
Bruemmer said, “Eggs in moderation (适度) are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint.” “Moderation,” he added, “is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread.”
Holly Andersen, a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat. “If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,” Andersen said.
Also, Andersen said, “The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon.”
8. What does Norrina Allen agree with
A. Eggs are completely unhealthy.
B. Eggs contain the most cholesterol.
C. Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.
D. Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
9. What is Bruemmer’s attitude towards the study
A. Interested. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Hopeful.
10. What can we learn from Holly Andersen’s words
A. Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.
B. Processed meat may cause heart disease.
C. Processed meat should be avoided.
D. The study is supported by evidence.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Do Eggs Cause Heart Disease
B. Are Eggs the Top Source of Cholesterol
C. What’s the Proper Amount of Eggs Eaten
D. Is the Cholesterol to Blame for Heart Disease
D
Imagine driving behind a huge truck shooting clouds of smoke into the air while your new fully electric vehicle cleans up its carbon emissions (排放). This dream may soon be a reality. A team of students in the Netherlands has created an electric car that not only doesn’t produce carbon dioxide when driving, but actually pulls it out of the air.
The two-seater sports car was designed and built in less than a year by a team of 32 students at Eindhoven University of Technology. Called “ZEM”, which stands for “zero emission mobility”, the car is equipped with special devices that remove carbon dioxide from the air as it drives. The team says if ZEM is driven about 32,000 kilometers, it can remove 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the air. That’s not a huge amount. The team calculates that 10 ZEM cars on the road for a year would remove as much carbon dioxide as a typical tree does during that time. However, they also point out that there are over a billion passenger cars in the world that could be using this technology. And if a billion cars were removing carbon dioxide instead of producing it, the result would be huge.
ZEM also has several other innovations that help to make it more capable of being sustained: the car’s frame and panels (面板) are 3D printed to reduce waste; it was built using recycled and recyclable materials; and it can be easily taken apart so that many of its parts can be reused. ZEM’s battery is also reusable, and has another handy feature: it can be charged with solar panels on the car’s roof—and can even be used to provide power to your house when the car isn’t on the road.
According to the statistics, transportation was responsible for over 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2020—and of those emissions, cars were responsible for 41%. The Eindhoven team says its goal is to challenge the electric car industry: If 32 students can build a car like this in less than a year, then surely car manufacturers (生产商) are expected to adopt these innovations, too.
12 What is special about ZEM
A. It can end the world’s CO2 release.
B. It can cut the truck’s CO2 emissions.
C. It can reduce the level of CO2 in the air.
D. It can absorb dirty air as well as CO2.
13. Why does the team run the calculation of ZEM in paragraph 2
A. To demonstrate a superb vision of ZEM cars.
B. To explain how ZEM removes CO2 as trees do.
C. To illustrate the ongoing change in car making.
D. To show the influence of ZEM on the car market.
14. What do we know about all the components of ZEM
A. They are of high quality. B. They are easy to process.
C. They are convenient to print. D. They are environmentally friendly.
15. What does the Eindhoven team hope to achieve in the future
A. Sharp decline in fuel consumption. B. Mass production of ZEM cars.
C. Big success in beating other car makers. D. Dramatic changes in transportation.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
“A cute dog,” Donald said as they walked by. “A free dog,” the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy. The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb’s company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone. But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked. She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk (花栗鼠) and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn’t call the police.
Paragraph 1:
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash on the floor.

April 12 was officially named by the UN in 2011 as World Space Day. We observe this day to inspire more people to learn scientific knowledge and generate innovative ideas about space.
The space exploration is essential for us. It has made a difference in fighting world hunger. The satellite data on weather patterns has helped farmers grow more food. Besides, many space experiments have promoted incredible products like organ monitors and digital cameras for us and we will learn how to live in a different environment.
Our progress in space exploration gives me hope and inspires me to make contributions to it. I dream of people living in the space one day and building a shared community there.

The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash on the floor. Actually, it was a thief who entered our kitchen and garage. Much to our relief, thanks to Rhubarb, the thief stole nothing. I called the police to report the break-in. I also told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend. Most people’s wallets and purses had been stolen.
Paragraph 2:
My purse was right next to the door. However, Rhubarb had scared the thief away before he or she could steal it. When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We were very thankful to Rhubarb. We loved her like a member of the family.
