Travelers are always looking for inspiration to guide their adventures. What are the top tourist attractions in the world
The Colosseum(罗马斗兽场), Rome
Set in the heart of the city, the Colosseum is an easy place to visit. Direct flights from around the world land in Rome daily, making it a destination you can visit on a weekend if you choose. Wander through Rome’s ancient streets, tour the Colosseum, and if time allows, plan a trip to other areas of Italy.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Much of the attraction comes from its location, high in the jungle-clad(丛林覆盖的)mountains of Peru. Set on a high plateau(高原)with green mountains, the setting is fantastic. The fact that the original builders created this amazing place in what would have been jungle, is, in itself, impressive.
Visitor numbers are now limited to a maximum per day.
The Acropolis, Athens
Situated above present day Athens, the Acropolis draws you up and in. Follow in the foot-steps of ancients as you walk up the same steps that have been walked on since 438 BCE—2,500 years.
Views out over the city are incredible as you walk between the restored ancient buildings. Near the end of the day, you’ll want to wander and watch the sunset from the stairs near the entrance. This is a nightly custom in Athens.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Wandering through Angkor Wat, the main centerpiece of the Angkor complex, it’s easy to feel like you’ve entered another era. This is without doubt, one of the most impressive sites in Southeast Asia and the main reason why many people visit Cambodia.

On the hottest day ever recorded in the UK to date last week, one old couple set out to the hospital. On their return from hospital, the husband “didn’t feel well”. He managed to pull the car over to a stop at the roadside before he passed out, leaving his terrified wife fearing for his life as he has a heart condition.
The woman, 86, checked her phone to call for help, only to find the battery had died. Desperate for assistance, she got out of the car and began waving wildly at passers-by for help. For a while it seemed like no one was going to come to their rescue and then, almost out of nowhere, Shaun Smith approached them.
The 31-year-old had spotted the woman trying to flag someone down and decided to see what was wrong. He pulled over behind their car. Knowing what had happened to the old man, Shaun moved him into his vehicle so he could use the air conditioning to cool him down. He then called for an ambulance, but emergency services told them it would take up to four hours to get to them.
Knowing it could be dangerous for the man, Shaun offered to drive them home and the ambulance would meet them there. The paramedics (医务人员) finally arrived and checked the man over and he was feeling much better. They noted that if Shaun hadn’t stopped to help, things could have been much worse.
A post about Shaun’s heroic deeds has gone viral online, getting over 84,000 likes and more than 3,700 comments. The response to this has been “overwhelming (令人不知所措的)”, said Shaun. He added, “To me, it was not really a big deal. And it feels like it has inspired a lot of people. It would be nice if people heard the story and then it makes them think twice before driving past someone who’s in need.”
4. Why did the old man pull his car over to a stop at the roadside
A. The battery had run out. B. He didn’t feel well.
C. It was too hot in the car. D. He wanted to get rescued.

A. His car had air conditioning.
B. The old man could feel better at home.

A. People have different opinions about this matter.
B. Shaun thinks it is his duty to help people in need.
C. Shaun’s story inspires people to help others in need.
D. Most people don’t stop while driving past someone in need.
7. Which can be the best title for the text

An underwater volcano eruption in Tongaon Saturday (Jan. 15, 2022) was captured as it happened in shocking images from an Earth — watching satellite, showing the great power for the explosive event in the South Pacific. The volcano eruption on the island of Hunga Tonga — Hunga Ha’apai is visible as a spectacular explosion in views from the GOES West Earth — observing satellite operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
A video of the eruption shows a vast mass of material from the volcano rising high into the atmosphere like a giant mushroom during the eruption as a shockwave extends outward from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai, one of the 170 islands that make up the South Pacific kingdom of Tonga. The eruption spawned a 4-foot tsunami that hit Tonga’s capital of Nuku’alofa, which is about 40 miles south of the volcano. A deafening noise from the eruption was heard across the Pacific Ocean, reaching as far away as Alaska, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Nuku’alofa was covered in a film of volcanic dust, according to the AP. There have been no official reports of injuries or damage from Tonga’s capital on Jan. 15, 2022, but its Internet access was interrupted by the event, the volcano on Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai first erupted on Dec, 20, 2021 and then exploded with a massive eruption on Jan, 13, which was also spotted by GOES West, NOAA officials said in a statement. That eruption on Jan. 13 was seven times more powerful than the December event and sent a huge mass of ash and gas over 12 miles into Earth’s atmosphere.
Saturday’s eruption also sent an ash mass to an altitude of nearly 12 miles, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the AP. New Zealand officials hoped to send military flights over the volcano to assess its status, followed by aid and supplies for Tonga, where water supplies may be polluted, Ardern added.
8. Which word can be used to describe the eruption in Tonga on Jan, 15
A. Invisible. B. Powerful. C. Common. D. Beautiful.
9. What does the underlined word “spawned” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Spread. B. Captured. C. Caused. D. Showed
10. What did the volcanic eruption on Jan lead to
A. The dirty atmosphere of Nuku’alofa.
B. The terrible damage in Tonga’s capital.
C. Large numbers of injuries in Tonga.
D. Other volcanic eruptions in Tonga.
11. Why did New Zealand officials hope to send military flights
A. To remove the polluted atmosphere.
B. To provide aid and supplies.
C. To stop the ash and gas erupting out.
D. To learn more details about the volcano.

Recent advances in AI have encouraged developments in realistic speech synthesis (合成). While this technology can improve lives through personalized voice assistants, it also has led to a big problem — synthesized speech can be misused to deceive humans and machines for bad purposes.
In response to this threat, Ning Zhang, an assistant professor of computer science, developed a tool called AntiFake, a novel defense mechanism designed to prevent deceptive speech synthesis before it happens. Unlike traditional detection (探测) methods, which are used to discover synthetic recordings as a post-attack tool, AntiFake takes a proactive role. It uses different techniques to prevent the synthesis of deceptive speech by making it more difficult for AI tools to read necessary characteristics from voice recordings.
“The groundbreaking tool uses an AI technique that was originally part of the cybercriminals’ toolbox (网络罪犯工具箱), but now we’ re using it to defend against them. We mess up the recorded voice signal just a little bit. It still sounds right to human listeners, but it’s completely different to AI,” Zhang explained.
To ensure AntiFake can stand up against ever-changing attackers and unknown synthesis models, Zhang and first author Zhiyuan Yu, a graduate student in Zhang’s lab tested it against five state-of-the-art speech synthesizers. AntiFake achieved a protection rate of over 95%. Zhang also tested AntiFake’s usability with 24 human participants to confirm the tool’s usefulness to different populations.
Currently, AntiFake can protect short parts of speech, taking aim at the most common type of voice impersonation (冒充). But, Zhang said, there’s nothing to stop this tool from being improved to protect longer recordings, in the ongoing fight against disinformation.
“Eventually, we want to be able to fully protect voice recordings,” Zhang said. “While I don’ t know what will be next in AI voice tech — new tools and features are being developed all the time — I do think our AntiFake against them will continue to be effective.”
12. What is the main purpose of AntiFake
A. To prevent wrongful synthesized speech.
B. To create personalized voices with AI tools.
C. To improve the quality of voice recordings.
D. To discover synthetic speech in real time.
13. Which of the following best describes AntiFake
A. Costly. B. Standard. C. Well-planned. D. Pioneering.
14. What can we say about AntiFake from Zhang’s tests
A. It benefited from current speech synthesizers.
B. It ran the risk of a computer network attack.
C. It showed a high level of effectiveness.
D. It needed further improvement.
15. What is the future goal of AntiFake according to Zhang
A. To create a new AI voice system.
B. To cover longer voice recordings.
C. To take the place of sound recorders.
D. To detect disinformation on the Internet.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

【47题答案】
【答案】Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned only with his hands sticking out of the water. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran quickly to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking at the last moment. By great effort, and with too much danger to himself, he brought Robert back to the shore.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Robert had true courage. And it was Henry who was the true friend worth making. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
