Just as the shiny brochure promised, from the moment I set foot on the Harvard campus last fall, I was exposed to an exciting and enlightening new world.
I was born and raised 1,500 miles away, in a small apartment in Jackson, Mississippi. I am an only child, so my mother overpowered me with her love. For someone who sees so much beauty in the world, she worked awfully hard to protect me from it. Television, rap music, and even basketball with the kids on the block were beyond consideration. It left me a bit bitter as a teenager, but I grew to appreciate her enormous sacrifices (牺牲) — walking me to the library every afternoon, laboring at multiple jobs to keep food on the table, and telling me stories late into the night.
When I announced the summer before my senior year of high school that I had decided to apply to a school in New England, I noticed her hesitant look before a warm smile enveloped her face. I pretended not to see, but I was never able to forget it. I tried to explain my reasons for wanting to leave — to prove I was smart enough, fear of taking the path of least resistance, the classic teenage feeling of being trapped but the words just made me sound shallow and ungrateful.
Nevertheless, I began to work on the college applications — an early one for Harvard and roughly a dozen others standing by. I knew the chance of getting into Harvard was not in my favor. To my joy, I was notified of my acceptance into Harvard three days before my birthday. That night, after all of the celebratory texts and hugs, I sat in my room and began to cry uncontrollably.
Over the course of this year, I have changed in ways I never anticipated. I think I know now why my mother let me go. Harvard has forced me to grow and take a fair look at the world, and at myself. Needless to say, I would not trade the experience for anything.
4. What made the young author upset
A. Living in a small apartment. B. Being forced to go to the library.
C. Seeing his mother take multiple jobs. D. Being unable to grow as he wished.
5. What was the mother’s first response to the author’s decision
A She was worried about it. B. She laughed at it.
C. She approved of it immediately. D. She turned a deaf ear to it.
6. What did the author say about his admission to Harvard
A. It deserved a big celebration. B. It served as a belated birthday present.
C. It was beyond his expectations. D. It was a favor he owed his mother.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Lifelong Learning in Harvard B. Reflections on the Road to Harvard
C. What Harvard Means to My Mother and Me D. How Harvard Shapes My Teenage Years
C
Last winter I enjoyed a brief adventure in Guatemala. Over a period of 12 days, I explored through the jungle to watch the sunrise and danced in the street during the holiday parade. But looking back on that trip, what I remember most vividly is a New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City, at a lifeless hotel. Rather than a countdown to midnight, I counted down the hours until my departure.
Nothing special happened during that night. Rather, the big role this hotel plays in my memories can be explained by a psychological principle called the recency effect. “The recency effect helps to account for our tendency to remember the ending part of a sequence of events with far more clarity than the rest, ” said Dr. Mary Poffenroth, a biopsychologist.
She says it arises from our short-term memory’s inability to hold on to more than a small amount of information at once. So while there is no magic formula to create lovely travel memories, employing the recency effect can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
Dr. Stephanie, a Neuroscientist, says that while you can strategically set off the recency effect at a trip’s end, you may have multiple opportunities to create lasting memories all along the way by breaking it up into smaller chunks.
Keep in mind that the recency effect can also backfire. “Ending an amazing trip with stressful flight delays, lost luggage or feeling unwell might be enough to overshadow the entire experience, resulting in remembering the trip as awful instead of joyful, ” Stephanie said.
To avoid disproportionately (不成比例地)spotlighting the final days, Poffenroth has created a trick: She amplifies (增强) earlier days in a trip to keep her memories well-rounded. “I collect little bits that will remind me of that day: a subway ticket, a seashell, a cardboard drink with a pub’ s logo on it. ” Then, as she is packing on the last day, “I go through all my little found treasures and spend a few moments recalling each one, ” she said. “This gives me a sense of closure for that chapter of travel and makes the experience memorable. ”
8. How did the author feel about the New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City
A. It was boring. B. It was eventful.
C. It was relaxing. D. It was cheerful.
9. What do we know about the recency effect from paragraph 2
A. It is based on a psychological principle.
B. It is widely used to create lovely memories.
C. It highlights the final part of a series of events.
D. It makes up for the inability of short-term memory.
10. What does the underlined word “backfire” mean in paragraph 4
A. Be avoided to some extent. B. Be applied extensively.
C. Produce undesirable consequences. D. Pose unexpected challenges.
11. According to Poffenroth, which of the following may help travelers have good memories
A. Share travel experiences. B. Recall the final days of a journey.
C. Purchase as many souvenirs as possible. D. Purposely gather reminders of a journey.
D
According to new research, babies are not only capable of creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be important for language learning.
In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. They found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that describe small quantities and combine these with familiar words to fully understand a phrase.
Lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Pomiechowska, said: “Human creativity is limitless: it has taken us to the moon and allowed us to cure deadly diseases — but despite its importance, we don’t yet know when and how this impressive ability to combine ideas and invent new things appears. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle. ”
In the study, the researchers worked with 60 babies, all around the age of 12 months. They started by teaching the babies two novel words describing quantity: “mize”, to mean “one”, and “padu”, to mean “two”.
Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures. By teaching novel words to represent quantities, the researchers were able to test the babies’ ability to combine concepts in real time, rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience.
By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.
According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world.
12. What puzzle did the researchers want to solve
A. The origin of creative thinking. B. The ways to cure deadly diseases.
C. The limitations of creative thinking. D. The importance of language acquisition.
13. What were the babies asked to do in the study
A. Create novel words. B. Count numbers in order.
C. Point out the number they knew. D. Match objects with what they heard.
14. What did the researchers use in the study
A. Previous data. B. Advanced technology.
C. Professional concepts. D. Regular examinations.
15. What is this passage mainly about
A. Human creativity is limitless. B. Children’s learning ability varies.
C. Children are good at creating words. D. Human creative thinking starts very early.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

【答案】范文:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
