How good are you at math Some love it and some hate it. Math is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal, to working out your household bills. But many are afraid of the moments when they have to deal with numbers and feel a real sense of worry. It can seem discouraging, but this “math worry” is perfectly normal, and you are surely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily show our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood at school. Research has found that math teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their worries to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be influenced.
It’s not clear why math causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there is a right or wrong answer might make you more worried about bad performance. And once we think we’re not a “math person”, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Some experts believe giving students, especially girls, good role models is very important, especially at a young age. They think the key is to get people, especially women who love teaching math to help younger children. They also suggest some ways of helping children enjoy math.
Make it fun! Teachers can help children find math fun by talking about math through stories, songs, games and imaginative plays so that students’ interest in math can be aroused. Children should be encouraged to question, which helps develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Use math in real life. Parents should guide children to connect different ideas within the mathematical world with the world around them. For example, asking children to count beans in a wise way, buy toys and fruit, and so on. Practice math every day. Practice makes perfect. Teachers should get children to practice for just 15 minutes every day. Each child works on different types of exercises, progressing at their own pace so as to build self-confidence and develop a positive attitude to math.
