LYING FLAT FOR SPACE SCIENCE
You would think that no one would pay someone just to lie in bed. However, this is exactly what happened in a recent experiment held by the European Space Agency. They wanted to study how living in space could influence an astronaut’s body. The volunteers can’t leave their beds during the two-month study. This experiment is called “Bedrest”. Let’s take a look.
What do the volunteers do The volunteers include 12 men aged between 20 and 45. The bed is tilted (倾斜) towards the head end, usually at 6 degrees. At least one shoulder should be touching the bed at all times, including during meals, showers and toilet visits. The researchers monitor how their bodies react. Why upside-down The volunteers are in a slightly upside-down position, and blood starts to rush to their heads. Their moves are limited so their muscles are becoming weaker. This is what astronauts experience in space during long stays without gravity (重力). This position allows researchers to test methods to fight against negative aspects of living in space.
A group of volunteers are also asked to “cycle” in bed. A bike-like machine is put at their feet, and their legs move as if riding a real bike. This is a common exercise on space stations.
1. How long should the volunteers stay in bed during the study
A. 20 days. B. 30 days. C. 45 days. D. 60 days.
2. What information can you learn from this experiment
A. It was organized by the American Space Agency.
B. It’s a common sport to ride a real bike on space stations.
C. There were both young women and men volunteers in the experiment.
D. The volunteer couldn’t let his shoulders leave the bed at the same time.
3. Why did the researchers do the experiment
A. They wanted to choose the best astronauts for the space travel.
B. They tried to find out ways to help astronauts live in space better.
C. They wanted to test if the astronauts could finish the space travel.
D. They wanted to design proper beds for astronauts to rest in space.

On the night of the Lantern Festival, the dragon boat by Lin Shunkui, a handicraft (手工艺) artist living in Dongcai village, Yueqing, Zhejiang province, will be burned on the village grounds—an important celebration during the Spring Festival—when villagers will wish away bad energy and hope that good luck will arrive.
It takes Lin several months to even a year to make the heavily decorated (装饰的) dragon. The boat has several layers (层) with richly decorated gates and windows in bright colors. People can learn fairy stories and great characters on each layer. They are controlled by a person at the bottom of the dragon and can move in different directions.
The dragon is not built for sailing in water and, after it is complete, will be sent to the village hall the day before the Lantern Festival for worshipping (敬奉). The next day, villagers will push the wheeled boat for a parade and dance past every household to drive away evil spirits.
The dragon boat, standing several meters in height and length, is a handicraft traced to the Ming Dynasty in Yueqing. Lin is the fifth generation of his family to carry on the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). “I will not allow the dragon to disappear in my generation,” he says, “I want to sail it everywhere into the sight of more people.” Some of Lin’s dragons are saved and he has placed one in front of his house so visitors can learn about this special tradition.
One of Lin’s dragon boats is on show at the Chinese Traditional Culture Museum in Beijing now. It is a highlight of Exhibition of the Spring Festival, running until March 2. “The Spring Festival is a time for family reunion. Various celebrations are shared by communities across the country, bringing family and friends together. In a time when many people move and travel outside their hometowns, Lin’s dragon boat means a lot to them.” says Wang Chenyang, the exhibition’s chief planner.

7. According to the passage, why is Lin’s dragon boat on show in Beijing now

C. It is the most important Spring Festival celebration in China.
D. It spreads the traditional culture and warms people’s hearts.

Countries around the world waste huge amounts of food every year: 37% of US food waste comes from households, and nearly one fifth of those food items are thrown away because we aren’t sure how to understand expiration dates (保质期). In fact, many foods are still safe to eat past their expiration dates. If the dates on our foods don’t tell us that something’s gone bad, what do they tell us
Before the 20th century, foods were sent to us directly from the farms, and many people knew how to tell freshness using sight, smell, and touch. But when supermarkets began selling processed (加工的) foods, product ages became harder to judge. So, in the1970s, supermarkets used packaging codes (包装代码) to track how long foods had been on the shelves. Later, they used a system that is still popular today called Open Dating, which means food producers labeled (标记) products with dates showing freshness.
In fact, there are usually no rules or any scientific support about what dates to use. Most supermarkets set these dates early, ensuring customers will taste their food at the best and come back for more. This means many foods are safe to eat far beyond their labeled dates. Old cookies, potatoes, and other shelf-stable foods might taste stale (不新鲜的), but they aren’t a health risk. If they go bad, your nose will let you know.
Of course, ▲ . Some foods had better be eaten up within the expiration dates. After the printed dates, ready-to-eat salads, cooked meats, cheeses are more likely to carry bacteria (细菌) that can still pass a smell or taste test. And the dates for baby foods must be checked strictly.
Since the expiration dates sometimes don’t work, the best way to prevent food waste is to cat what you buy! And don’t forget that your eyes, nose, and tongue are helpful to decide whether the food is fit for the table or the trash bin.
8. How does the writer lead in the topic at the beginning
A. By doing a survey. B. By comparing facts.
C. By listing numbers. D. By showing opinions.
9. What does Para 2 mainly tell us
A. It tells how the food expiration labels developed.
B. It tells how people told the freshness of the food before.
C. It tells what system is still used in the supermarket now.
D It tells what we can know from the food expiration dates.
10. What can be the best to fill in the ▲ in Paragraph 4
A. The supermarkets sometimes make mistakes.
B. You are better safe than being sorry in some cases.
C. You can smell or taste the food to check the freshness.
D. It’s better not to waste the food after the expiration dates.
11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. ①/②/③④⑤ B. ①/②③④⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①/②③/④⑤

When I was growing up. I had an old neighbour named Dr Gibbs who was a lot nicer than many of the adults in our community.
When Dr Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting theories on plant care and growth. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled (宠坏) them so that each following tree generation would grow weaker. So you have to make things difficult for them and weed out (淘汰) the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots (根), and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water. Then I understood that deep roots were to be treasured.
I remembered he planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr Gibbs passed away a couple of years after I left home. Every now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They’re extremely tall, big since they have deep roots now. However, the trees in my garden trembled in a cold wind although I had watered them for several years.
It seemed that adversity provided these trees with benefits that comfort never could do. I stood there deep in thought.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often pray (祈祷) for them. Mostly I pray that their lives will be easy. But I think it’s time to change my prayer because now I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be torn apart.
12. How did Dr Gibbs grow new trees
A. He tried to spoil them. B. He talked to them often.
C. He never watered them. D. He took good care of them.
13. What does the underlined word “adversity” probably mean in Paragraph 7
A. Cold treatment. B. A difficult situation.
C. Thoughtful care. D. A pleasant experience.
14. Which of the following may be the writer’s best prayer for his two sons now
A I wish them good luck so that they can meet people like Dr Gibbs.
B. I wish them cool rest under the tree to keep away from the hot sun.
C. I wish them beautiful wings, with which they can fly high in the sky.
D. I wish them strong wills to take up the unexpected challenges in the life.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage
A. To Keep Away From Pain B. To Grow Deep Roots
C. A Wise Doctor D. My Valuable Memory

World Mental Health Day falls on October 10 every year. Many people are living with some mental problems so they feel tired and nervous at the end of the day. But there’s a way to deal with these problems. That is to find inner (内心的) peace. Here are some suggestions on finding your inner peace.
Firstly, accept that sometimes life being out of order is a part of life and feeling much stress is okay. Live in peace with the natural order of all life. Accepting this fact can help you control your life.
Secondly, when you feel too much stress, remember to take a deep breath to keep calm. It sounds simple but helpful. By breathing deeply, stress is also shaken off. Deep breathing increases oxygen to your brain, so your body and mind can feel more relaxed.
Thirdly, stop expecting a certain result nervously, especially when many things are not in your control. Keep a mind that lets things go in their own way. It’s a difficult lesson to learn, but it’s a good way to help you focus on things that really matter.
Finally, try to understand that you have the freedom to choose and shape your own life. When you feel free, you can feel powerful and take control of things you do. It’s a condition that can help you take control once again and find calm.
