A Chinese student studying in the UK said her tutor, who quit her job to knit sweaters for penguins in Antarctica, has stirred up heated online debate.
“Thank you for your email. I have left to pursue my dream of knitting sweaters for penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office on a permanent, open-ended basis until my penguin friends are happy,” the tutor replied in an e-mail.
The charitable act, which sounds humorous, is in fact a real initiative. A major oil spill occurred in the waters off the Phillip Island in Australia in the late 1990s, severely affecting local penguins who saw their population decline over two breeding seasons due to consuming oil in an attempt to remove it from their feathers, exposure to extreme temperatures, and inability to hunt. In response, the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks launched a public welfare campaign Knit for Nature, calling on enthusiasts worldwide to knit sweaters for the freezing penguins during the process of recovery.
In 2001, another major oil spill occurred in the waters near Phillip Island, with a total of 438 penguins affected. Ninety-six percent were successfully rescued and released back into the wild with the help of the Penguin Foundation and these sweaters. More than 200,000 sweaters have been knitted for penguins since the launch of the project.
However, some people argue that the sweaters could potentially add extra weight to the penguins’ bodies or cause them to overheat. The Penguin Foundation explained that the sweaters are used temporarily to keep penguins warm until their bodies are washed and their feathers recover.
Sweaters for penguins must be made from wool and follow specific knitting guidelines. Most of the donated sweaters were suitable for little penguin recovery in the event of an oil spill. However, despite the very best efforts, some of them were too big or small to fit the penguins or came with decorations which, while beautifully creative, would pose a risk to little penguins. These penguin sweaters are sold on penguin toys to raise funds for wildlife conservation on Phillip Island.
4. What is the purpose of mentioning the tutor’s email
A. To highlight people’s care for penguins.
B. To stimulate thinking about career choices.
C To amuse readers with an unusual decision.
D. To introduce the topic with a striking example.
5. How did the oil spill lead to the penguin population decrease in the late 1990s
A. Penguins took in oil while cleaning.
B. Penguins faced competition for food.
C. Penguins were driven to colder areas.
D. Penguins were hunted during their recovery.
6. What do the data in paragraph 4 reveal about the penguin rescue
A. Sweaters improved penguins’ health.
B The knitted sweaters were oversupplied.
C. Most penguins coexisted with oil pollution.
D. Sweaters contributed to the successful rescue.
7. What is required for a penguin sweater
A. Reusable on toys for future sales.
B. Woolen and fit for penguins’ size.
C. Extra thick to protect penguins from cold.
D. Decorated creatively with colorful patterns.

Imagine this: You pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Not only can you see their face and hear their voice, but you can also smell the cookies they just baked. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but could it actually happen
Smells are created by tiny particles called molecules that float through the air and reach your nose. Your nose then sends signals to your brain, which identifies the smell.
So, could your phone send these smell molecules to you Scientists are working on it. Think about how your phone screen works. It doesn’t have every color in the world stored inside it. Instead, it uses just three colors to create millions of different colors and shades. Now imagine something similar for smells. Scientists are developing digital scent technology that uses a small number of different cartridges (气味盒), each containing a specific scent. Just like how pixels (像素) mix three colors to create images, these scent cartridges could mix to create different smells.
Just like images on your phone are made of digital codes (编码) that represent combinations of pixels produced by a future phone could be created using digital codes. Each smell could have a recipe made up of different amounts of the ingredients in the cartridges.
When you receive a digital scent code your phone could mix tiny amounts of the different scents from the cartridges to create the desired smell. This mix would then be released through a small vent on the phone, allowing you to smell it.
Creating a phone that can produce smells involves several challenges. One is designing a system that can produce thousands of different smells using only a few cartridges. Another is how to control how strong a scent should be and how long a phone should release it. And phones will also need to sense scents near them and transform those to digital codes so your friends’ phones can send smells to you. The cartridges should also be easy to refill, and the chemicals in them be safe to breathe. These hurdles make it a tricky but exciting area of research.
Even though we’re not there yet, scientists and engineers are working hard to make smell phones a reality. Maybe one day you’ll be able to not only see and hear your friend’s birthday party over the phone but also smell the candles they blew out!
8. How does the author explain the working principles of the smell phone
A. By explaining how people detect smells.
B. By describing how digital images are coded.
C. By comparing it to how screens create colors.
D. By demonstrating how smells travel in the air.
9. What does the underlined word “recipe” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. A full list of ingredients in the cartridges.
B. A novel method of creating and sending smells.
C. A specific combination of scents to create smells.
D. A detailed introduction to cooking with ingredients.
10. What is considered as a headache when developing a smell phone
A. Designing one cartridge for unlimited smells.
B. Ensuring the phone can store scents long enough.
C. Matching smell sending speed with real-time video.
D. Creating harmless and refillable cartridges within control.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Smell Phones: Taking the World by Storm
B. Smell Phones: Bringing Scents to Digital Communication
C. Human Senses: Exploring the Science behind Smell
D. Human Senses: Creating Challenges for Smell Phones
D
Some films shine brighter than others. RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys,” a stirring cinematic adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is polished to a remarkable brilliance. Its confidence comes on like a stiff breeze on a sticky Southern summer day, as it tells a boldly designed story of two Black kids named Elwood and Turner, living during the height of segregation (种族隔离) in Florida. Elwood is a smart, idealistic kid who is wrongly sent to the abusive walls of Nickel Academy, a reform school for boys, while Turner is the bright friend he makes in the dark passages of those days.
Your immersion into the film’s world begins early on. From its opening scene with closeups of fruit hanging high up in a tree, cigarette smoke floating through the air and hands shuffling cards, “Nickel Boys” makes you feel like you’re taking a glance into someone’s life. You’re getting a kid’s perspective of Christmas trees and decorations from below; sheets being put onto beds and laughter ringing in the air. The simple, joyful human moments at the beginning of the film are in sharp contrast to the inhumane treatment shown later on.
Ross achieves something brilliant when he shows this first-person point of view from Elwood’s perspective. It’s as if you see through his eyes, moving along with him, but you also hear his voice in conversations. This soon shifts when Turner makes his first appearance, and his perspective is also shown throughout the rest of the film. This choice is effective in making the viewer feel every conversation, every loss, every little moment. It also shows both the boys’ very different attitudes toward whether the truth would win out.
Shot with frequent shifts in perspective, “Nickel Boys” challenges the audience to see and feel the world through Black eyes, demanding effort and empathy. This isn’t a film that holds your hand, but rather one that expects you to meet it on its own terms. Yet, as a clear masterpiece held together by visual splendor and distinctive performances, it proves that this brave, honest storytelling strategy is well worth the reward.
12. What can we learn about the film “Nickle Boys” from the first paragraph
A. It has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
B. Its setting reflects the reality of racism.
C. The story happened during a hot summer.
D. Both main characters were wrongly punished.
13. Why does RaMell Ross adopt shifting perspectives
A. To highlight both boys’ very different viewpoints.
B. To avoid focusing too much on one character’s story.
C. To confuse the audience and challenge their understanding.
D. To showcase the reform school’s effect on different students.
14. Which of the following best describes the film
A. Cheerful and realistic. B. Daring and immersive.
C. Heavy but inspiring. D. Heartwarming but challenging.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A film review. B. A book introduction.
C. A historical analysis. D. An online advertisement.

Dayna and I are best friends. Cupcakes turned us into fierce competitors. As we prepared for the annual Baking Competition at the Baking Club, I confidently told her, “Prepare to be amazed.” She shot me a skeptical look. The event was packed with family and friends, and I was determined to beat last year’s champion, Dayna.
Mrs. Cooper from Cathy’s Cupcake and Donut Depot kicked off the competition by announcing that the first round was to bake mini cupcakes. The clock started ticking. Measuring spoons pinged against bowls. Clouds of flour settled on the countertops. Mixers whirred. Everything was going perfectly, and I tasted my creation. Mmm. Bright and amazing. Then I glanced over to see how Dayna was doing. She had accidentally dropped a dozen eggs! I turned off my mixer and rushed over to her station to help her clean up, praying my good deed wouldn’t ruin my chances.
After the mess was cleared, everyone including Dayna continued baking, and the judges tasted our cupcakes. When the results came in, I was thrilled to hear my name called for Round 2 alongside Dayna and a few others. The challenge this time was to bake standard cupcakes, but just then, I realized I’d forgotten to bring my candies for decoration. In a panic, I signaled Dayna, who kindly offered butter crackers and banana chips. Thanks to her, I was back on track. As we worked through the round, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna and I were moving on to the final round: colossal cupcakes (巨型杯子蛋糕).
I made it. Whew. I can’t let her win again. “You showed some mad skills, Isaac,” Dayna said, her voice laced with respect. I shrugged. “You too. Thanks for saving me before.”
“No problem. May the best baker win,” she said.
I smiled. “Enough with the pleasantries. Now I’m out for sweet revenge.”
Dayna narrowed her eyes. “Bring it.”

【答案】One possible version:
Final round. I sprang into action. Measuring and mixing, I grated dark chocolate and sprinkled it over the dough, determined to create a showstopper. Dayna wouldn’t know what hit her. I filled each cupcake mold and got my colossals into the oven. At Dayna’s station, three different layers — chocolate, vanilla and strawberry — sat ready. That would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the beautiful layered look she wanted was turning into a tie-dye effect. Still, she wasn’t giving up. At last, my colossal cupcakes were nothing short of elegance. Dayna’s turned out way better than I’d expected. As we waited for the final results, Dayna expressed doubt about her cupcakes, but I wasn’t sure of my own outcome either.
After a tense few minutes, the winner was announced: “Isaac!” I blinked with disbelief. As thunderous applause erupted, I gave a small bow. “Congratulations, Isaac!” My best friend clapped along with the crowd. I gave Dayna a shy smile. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Dayna. Thanks for saving me before.” Despite the competition, we were still a team, and that night, I called Dayna to discuss our next move. “So now we’re tied,” I said. “One win each.” She asked, “Already planning for next year ” I replied with a grin, “You can bet on it!” In that moment, I realized that no matter what the outcome was, our friendship was the sweetest victory of all.
