A
Stephen used to work in a company. Unfortunately (不幸地), he got serious heart disease(疾病). He couldn't work for a long time. Thinking he could still do something for others, he decided to be a volunteer at a Children's Hospital. Stephen loved children very much. With his love, he did his job well. Some friends invite you over and serve you a delicious dinner. Someone lends you his car while there’s something wrong with yours. You are sick, and a friend brings you a meal and cares for you. How do you show your gratitude(感谢) ?
Sometimes simply saying thank you is enough. At other times, it is thoughtful to say thank you in a more different way. Be sure to tell that person what you are grateful for and why you are grateful.
Here are some common ways to say thank you.
You can write a thank-you note. People are very busy these days. A handwritten note shows you took the time to tell someone you are grateful to him or her. Or you can call and thank the person. You would be surprised how this can make someone’s day. Another idea is to send a thank-you e- mail. This is not quite as personal, but it still shows your gratitude.
There are many other ways to say thank you. To say thank you in a creative way, you can:
★ Select some flowers from a shop. Write a thank-you note.
★ Give the person a basket of fresh fruit or a homemade treat.
★ Invite a friend to a movie, meal, snack or coffee.
★ Give a gift card for a bookstore or a restaurant. That way the person can pick out a favourite book or eat out.
★ Find out what the person likes and give something related to that.
★ To say a big thank you to someone, have a party for that person.
As you can see, there are many ways to say thank you. Think of some ways of your own. You will feel good trying one of the ideas, and the person being thanked will feel good too. It’s a win-win situation !

Task 1. Discussion
Tell Ss that they may meet many people who need help. Ss may know the poor, the blind, etc. Teach them more about the people who need help, such as

Divide the class into pairs. Ask students to talk about what they want people to help them if they were blind, deaf, elderly, homeless, physically disabled or poor.
If students have trouble coming up with ideas, offer some suggestions, e.g.,
l For people in wheelchairs, wide sidewalks, ramps and automatic doors are helpful.
l For poor people, education programs that allow them to get better
jobs are helpful. Free medical care and affordable housing are also helpful.
l Blind people can benefit from Braille sings, spoken announcements rather than written notices, contoured pavements and unobstructed sidewalks.
l Elderly people can benefit from public transit that is easy to board, places to sit down outdoors and escalators or lifts instead of stairs.
l For homeless people, shelters and soup kitchens can offer short-term help.
l Deaf people can benefit from written notices and a greater awareness of sign language.
Practise
Divide the class into pairs. Ask students to read Amy and Daniel’s conversation in Part B. Then ask them to talk about the people in Part A and how their lives might be made easier. Less able students can use Amy and Daniel’s conversation as a model and replace the underlined words with their own ideas. More able students can create their own conversations.
Act the dialogue
Give Ss a few minutes to practice their conversation. Remind them that they should practice as much as they can. Then ask some pairs to act out their conversation.

四、阅读理解。
One terribly cold day, a snowstorm hit our area. Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of dangers.
When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, Bruce suddenly warned me, “Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!” I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I couldn’t wait to finish the job and go back home. I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt whether my friend was right.
The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I had been shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what happened, she quickly called the power company. Workers from the power company soon arrived. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale. “You should have been killed,” he said. It was my boots that saved my life.
Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down——but not my mother. Even though she was glad that I wasn’t hurt, my mother was still serious with me. After all(毕竟), I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.

Ask students what the form of the passive voice is and show them on the blackboard.
基本结构:be + p.p.
一般现在时被动语态:am/is /are + p.p.
现在进行时被动语态:am/is/are + being + p.p.
Then ask students to fill in the following blank with correct passive voice.

1.Show some sentences which use the future passive voice and ask students to observe the underlined parts.

2.一般将来时的被动语态的用法
(1)表示根据计划或者安排将要发生的被动动作。
Those books will be published next month.
(2)表示有固定性条件就有规律性的被动结果。
If you speak in class, you will be punished.
3.一般将来时的被动语态的注意事项:
(1)在时间、条件状语从句中,应使用现在时表示将来时。同样,应使用现在时的被动语态表示将来时的被动语态。
He says he will leave the company if he is punished for this.
When the dam is completed, the Changjiang River will be controlled.
(2)使用一般将来时的被动语态时,不要遗漏被动式中的be。
下周将上映一部新影片。

In classroom, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests. So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.
Here are the three stages(阶段) of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.
Before Class
Review your notes you have taken before you come to class. This will be good for remembering what was covered. Get you ready to understand new information your teacher will provide.
During Class
Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and “the signal words” that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write in your notes. Examples of signal words are “The most important point…” and “Remember that…”. Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviations such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
After Class
Rewrite your notes to make them more complete and accurate(准确的) by changing abbreviations into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Use them to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher for help.
