Here is my daughter with her missing tooth. My daughter finally lost her first tooth. She's been waiting for this moment for, well, more than a year.
Most of the kids in her first-grade class have lost not only one tooth, but several. But my daughter kept waiting impatiently.
Then, she finally got a loose(松的) tooth, and I've hardly ever seen my daughter so happy---except on Christmas, Children's Day or her birthday. Last Friday night, she was eating an apple, and the tooth started to become loose. Minutes later, my daughter cheered with excitement. The tooth was out!
I cleaned it off and put it under her pillow(枕头). When she went to bed that night, my daughter wondered, “Will the tooth fairy (牙仙) let me keep the tooth?” I told her she might and she'd have to wait and see.
The tooth fairy comes from an ancient legend. It's believed that when a kid loses his first tooth and puts it under his pillow, the tooth fairy will come to visit him after he falls asleep. If the tooth fairy sees the kid and loves him very much, she will leave some money under his pillow without taking away the tooth. If she doesn't think the kid is lovely enough, she will still leave some money but take the tooth away.
And then I put a dollar in the envelope so that I'd remember to put it under my daughter's pillow after she was safely asleep. However, I forgot. Luckily, her dear dad remembered.

Many families in the United States celebrate National Grandparents Day on the first Sunday of September.
Many people honor(表达敬意) their grandparents through activities such as gift-giving, card-giving, and children invite their grandparents to school for a day where they join in special lessons or activities. Many students take part in telling stories about their grandparents, and children also take part in art competitions and use a story about their grandparents in their artwork.
About four million greeting cards are sent within the United States each year on this Day. It is also an opportunity for people to express their love to their grandparents through kind actions such as making a phone call or inviting their grandparents to dinner. People living in retirement villages or nursing homes may receive a visit from their grandchildren or loved ones on this day.
National Grandparents Day has more than one origin. Some people believed Michael Goldgar first started it in the 1970s after a visit to his aunt in a nursing home. To make the day official(官方的), he made 17 trips to Washington DC over seven years to meet with the officials.
Others think Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia, is the one who started the holiday. McQuade worked hard to educate the people about the greatness of the old people. She also advised people to take a grandparent home, for a lifetime of experience.
Each year the President calls on people and groups to celebrate the day with some activities.

Then he went back to his bedroom, took off his dressing gown, got back into bed, turned off the light and tried to go to sleep.

Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you may be an "early bird." Are you afraid of the sound of the alarm clock(闹钟) each morning and do you have little energy until the afternoon? If that's true, you're probably a "night owl(夜猫子)". "Early birds" are called "morning people", while "night owls" are called "evening people".
People are usually divided into these two kinds, but what makes us this way? Is one better than the other? Different people have different ideas.
Traditionally, morning people are praised as hardworking. On the other hand, night people are considered lazy. This idea dates back to early times when most people farmed, worked and slept according to the sun. Even in the 21st century, most people still believe so. People think morning people have an advantage over evening people.
In a scientific study, both "morning people" and "evening people" were watched carefully during their normal asleep and awake time. After they were awake for 10 hours, the "morning people" became sleepy and careless. However, the "evening people" became more alert(机敏的). Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase of energy from their brains. This allows night owls to be active for longer periods of time, usually until bedtime.
Which is better, an early bird or an evening owl? It is difficult to decide it. Some people get up early and others go to bed late because they have different body clocks.
