Module 3 Journey to space
单元话题阅读理解
一、阅读理解
Our nearest neighbour is the moon. In the sky, the moon and the sun seem to be of the same size because the moon is much nearer.
The moon makes the tides(潮汐)—the changes in the level of the sea. The moon and the sun together pull the sea. In some parts of the world, the difference between "high tide" (when the sea is very near to the land) and "low tide" (when the sea is far away from the land) is very big. This is very important to ships.
The moon is very different from the earth. Gravity(地心引力)on the moon is one-sixth of that on the earth. There isn't any air. During the day, the part of it that face the sun is very, very hot but at night it is very, very cold. Nothing can live on the moon.
If the moon goes between the earth and the sun, we have an eclipse of the sun(日食). The moon stops the light from the sun and it is dark in the day.
If the earth goes between the moon and the sun, we have an eclipse of the moon. The moon goes into the shadow(影子)of the earth and it disappears for a few minutes.
1.From Paragraph 1 we know that _______.
A.the sun is as big as the moon B.the sun is smaller than the moon
C.the moon is lighter than the sun D.the moon is smaller than the sun
2.Which of the following is TRUE about the moon
A.It's very cold in the day time. B.It doesn't have any air on it.
C.It has no gravity. D.It is the same as the earth.
3.When the moon goes between the earth and the sun, it is dark in the day. We call it the eclipse of_______.
A.the moon B.the sun C.the stars D.the earth
4.Which of the following happens when we are an eclipse of the moon
A.The earth goes between the moon and the sun.
B.The moon goes into the shadow of the sun
C.The moon goes into the shadow of its own
D.The sun disappears for a few minutes.
5.Which of the following statements is TRUE
A.The moon and the sun are of the same size.
B.Gravity on the earth is one-sixth of that on the moon.
C.The moon itself pulls the sea and makes the tides.
D.When the sea is near to the land, a high tide may happen.
6.阅读理解
Is there intelligent(有智力的)life on other planets For years, scientists said "no." or "we don't know." But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在)somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact them.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life, "say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜)have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies, "says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the earth. "
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜)allow scientists to discover smaller planets-the size of Mars or the earth-in other solar systems, these planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited the earth "Probably not, "says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other. "
(1)What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A.The age and size of the earth.
B.Something about the Milky Way.
C.The reasons why intelligent life might exist.
D.The earth is the only planet with intelligent life.
(2)Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past
A.There were not any smaller planets.
B.There were not any powerful telescopes.
C.The astronomers were not interested in them.
D.The Milky Way didn't exist at that time.
(3)Why haven't beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak
A.Because they're afraid of us.
B.Because it's long way away.
C.Because they don't want to see us.
D.Because they don't know how to use radio signals.
(4)What does the underlined phrase "life forms" in the last paragraph mean
A.Messages. B.Tools.
C.Radio signals. D.Intelligent beings.
7.阅读理解
In the universe, as we know, there is the sun, the moon, the earth and a good many stars. Through our geography lessons, we know the earth goes round the sun, and the moon goes round the earth. We have day and night because the earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is day. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, it is night.
Just because the moon is closer to the earth than the sun, it looks much bigger than the sun. Big things will look smaller when they are farther, and small things also look bigger when they are nearer.
The sun is bright enough to give out very strong light. The moon can't give any light at all, but it looks quite bright, too. Why In fact, the light from the moon comes from the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But actually(事实上)the stars are much bigger and brighter than the moon. They look smaller than the moon also because they are farther away from the earth.
There are still many other planets in the universe.
But of all these planets, only on the earth there are living things and people can only live on the earth, too. But at 9:00 am on October 15th, 2003, Chinese pilot Yang Liwei was sent up to space. He stayed there for 21 hours. It was the first time for Chinese to get into space.
(1)When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, the other part of the earth is .
A.night B.day C.evening D.Sunday
(2)When did the pilot from our country return to the earth
A.On November 15th, 2002. B.On October 16th, 2003.
C.On May 15th, 2004. D.On October 15th, 2003.
(3)Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.The moon goes round the earth, and it can't give out any light at all.
B.The moon goes round the sun, and its light is from the sun.
C.The earth moves round the moon, and people can live only on the earth.
D.Of all the planets, only the earth moves round the sun.

Why does the Sky Change Colours
What is the sky How high is it What colour is it What birds can live above it These questions are difficult to answer, aren't they
In fact, the sky has no colour. Then why does the sky look blue
We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings (机翼). Planes can't fly very high. That's because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1,000 kilometres from the earth, we'll find no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without air.
Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The colour will be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.
Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises or falls, you will see red, orange, and other colours in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.
Who can see the colours of the sky high above the earth The astronauts! They can see those beautiful colours of the sky from outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky will be that dark and its colour will be black.
Now you may understand that we see colours because the air scatters (使散射) the sunlight. Light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no light or colours.
9.Planes can't fly as high as possible because ____.
A.the sky is blue B.the wings are heavier
C.the sky has no colour D.the air becomes thinner
10.When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see ____.
A.more air B.bluer skies C.more colours D.more clouds
11.When might you see many colours in the sky during the day
A.At 6:00 am. B.At 9:00 am.
C.At 1:00 pm. D.At 3:00 pm.
12.According to the passage, why does the sky change colours
A.Because it's colourful itself.
B.Because the world is colourful.
C.Because the sunlight has colours.
D.Because the air scatters the sunlight.

Venus is the second nearest planet from the sun. It is only a little smaller than the earth, about 95 %of the earth's diameter (直径) and 80 %of the earth's mass (质量). Earth and Venus are sometimes called the twin planets.
The word Venus means the goddess of love and beauty in Greek. ____▲____ probably because it is one of the brightest planets we have known by now. We human beings have known Venus for a long time. It has a cloudy atmosphere (大气层). This helps it reflect (反射)sunlight. So it appears to be very bright. It is easily observed in the sky. It is seen near the sun. It seems that it is the brightest thing in the sky except the sun and the moon. Venus reaches its maximum (最大的) brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, and is often thought as the Morning Star or as the Evening Star. A lot of observation (观察)of Venus was important to Copernicus's Heliocentric Theory (日心说) of the solar system.
Scientists for years thought that Venus was very likely to have life in some ways. In 1962, scientists sent the first spacecraft to explore Venus, and we will know more about Venus in the future.
