Only a few adventurous individuals sailed the seas, drove wagons, or rode horses, and the majority of people throughout human history have relied on their own two feet for transportation, moving one step at a time. Perhaps that’s why retired The Wall Street Journal reporter and cancer survivor Neil King decided to take a journey to explore a small part of America’s rich history, seeking to rediscover its roots.
“I was off to do something that was very pure and basic,” Neil said, “just to notice things and immerse myself in a walk through one spring that had kind of cleansed my eyes in some ways, or my spirit.”
It seemed appropriate to start the journey into America’s past in Washington, D.C. “This is the front yard, the nation’s front yard,” Neil said. “It just seemed like the perfect place to start this walk.” Then Neil crossed the Mason-Dixon Line, which runs through the middle of a 19th-century farm. In York, he walked through a cemetery (公墓), where some volunteers were cleaning up and honoring unsung heroes. In Pennsylvania, he stopped for an afternoon to socialize with some locals.
“On the road, I met so many great people that I almost felt were put there by some higher power to interact with me,” Neil said. “And indeed, are we not the offspring (后代) of a power greater than ourselves, the power of community ”
Meanwhile, the health benefits of walking are obvious: increased cardio capacity, deeper breathing that energizes the lung, and power to almost every muscle in the body. On another level, moving through the small details of lives intertwined with history and emotion gives him a sense of what we can accomplish.
Neil said, “Finally, I think the walk, despite all the gloomy thoughts that can arise from various episodes in our history and past, unexpectedly filled me with a more constructive expectation for what’s to come.”
24.Why did Neil choose walking as his travelling mode
A.He tried his best to figure out the meaning of life.
B.He wanted to draw much more attention from others.
C.He followed the most common practice to improve himself.
D.He hoped to have the chance to promote American history.

C.The famous attractions in the USA. D.The uniqueness of Washington, D.C.
26.Which can replace the underlined word “intertwined” in paragraph 5
A.satisfied B.connected C.familiar D.busy
27.How did Neil feel in the end
A.Shocked. B.Tired. C.Optimistic. D.Curious.

“Are we alone in the universe That’s the key question we’re trying to answer here,” Meenakshi Wadhwa, a planetary scientist, tells her class. As she explains, one student takes notes while another holds up an iPhone to take a photo of the slides. In many ways this lecture hall at Arizona State University is like any other. A group of enthusiastic women sit attentively in the front row; the men are spread out in the back. But the hearing aids suggest how unusual this class is.
Mirabella, a 20- storey “university retirement community” on ASU’s campus, is home to over 300 retired people. When it was opened in 2020, the senior-living facility was nearly fully subscribed. Most residents are having a ball. They can attend the same classes and cultural events as students, but with the distinct benefit of not having to take exams. In their dorms, facilities include an art studio, a pool and gym, and a games room. Only the second floor feels institutional, with a memory- care centre and rooms for residents who need round- the- clock attention.
This is part of a wider trend. An estimated 85 colleges in America are now connected to senior living communities. With more than 10,000 baby boomers (生育高峰期出生的人) in America turning 65 every day, the opportunity for alternative forms of retirement is pared with previous generations, boomers are wealthy, educated and picky. They want to remain active and not locked away. These wishes can all be met on a university campus.
For universities, welcoming pensioners (领退休金者) can make sense too. Nationally, undergraduate enrolment dropped from over 18m in 2010 to below 16m in 2022. As for what to do with the extra space, the smartest ones, Andrew Carle at Georgetown University says, provide a continuum of care — including for the very last stage of life. “The charity is the icing on the cake,” he says of the potential that residents will include universities in their wills.
28.How does the writer introduce the topic
A.By raising a question. B.By making a comparison.
C.By offering an explanation. D.By giving a description.
29.Why are university retirement communities well- received
A.They provide free medical car
B.They have various research facilities.
C.They allow students to take exams flexibly.
D.They help seniors live an active and engaging life.
30.How can universities benefit from integrating senior living communities
A.It improves university teaching programs.
B.It addresses the university enrolment decline.
C.It draws public attention to university education.
D.It earns universities the fame for caring for seniors.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Different forms of retirement.
B.The education welfare of pensioners.
C.The trend of retiring on college campuses.
D.A new way for universities to make profits.

Wild chimpanzees are known to consume a broad range of plant matter, making it hard for researchers to figure out whether chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants to heal(治愈) themselves, or "passively " consume plants that happen to, be medicinal.
At the Budongo Central Forest Reserve in Uganda, researchers from the University of Oxford observed the behaviors and health of 51 wild chimpanzees, belonging to two habituated communities. The researchers observed a male chimpanzee with an injured hand seek out and eat the leaves of a fern, which may have helped to reduce pain and swelling. They also recorded another sick chimpanzee consuming a cat-thorn tree.
The team also tested the plant species in the reserve, which they suspected were being consumed by the chimpanzees to self-medicate, for anti-inflammatory (抗炎) and antibacterial (抗菌) characteristics. The species included plants not part of the chimpanzees' normal diet, but being consumed for their healing characteristics. The authors found 88% of the plant species had antibacterial characteristics, arresting the growth of bacteria, while 33% of them had anti- inflammatory characteristics.
Deadwood from a tree in the Dogbane family showed the strongest antibacterial activity and also had anti- inflammatory characteristics, suggesting it could be used to treat wounds, they said. Roots from the East African mahogany tree and leaves from fem were found to exhibit potential anti-inflammatory effects. The results suggested that chimpanzees looked for and ate specific plants for their medicinal effects, and the study was one of the first to document evidence of this kind, the authors said.
Team member Fabien Schultz hopes that the findings might lead to promising candidates for human medicines. "What if human lives can be saved by following the ways of our animal relatives " he says.
32. Why is it challenging to determine if chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants
A. Medicinal plants are rare in the forest.
B. Chimpanzees consume a wide variety of plant matter.
C. Chimpanzees hide themselves when they are sick or injured.
D. Researchers can hardly observe chimpanzees in the thick forest.
33. Which of the following might have the most powerful antibacterial effects
A. Dogbane trees. B. Leaves of ferns.
C. Cat-thorn trees. D. East African mahogany tree roots.
34. What potential benefit does Fabien Schultz hope to achieve from the findings
A. Identifying new human medicines. B. Developing new animal care techniques.
C. Improving chimpanzee health in the wild. D. Discovering new food sources for humans.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Diet of Wild Chimpanzees'
B. The Medicinal Characteristics of Plants
C. The Dietary Habits of Wild Chimpanzees
D. Chimpanzees Using Plants for Self- Medication

Are you the kind of person who hated school Or are you more like Michael Nicholson, who can’t stop learning He currently has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a doctorate! 36 The word comes from Greek with “phil” meaning “a lover of” and “math” meaning “learning”.
Humans are all philomaths to an extent – our brain is born to be curious. We want to learn and understand, partly to make sense of the world but also because of something called neoteny. This is a term that refers to the teenage characteristics of some animals, including humans, being preserved into adulthood. One of these traits is neuroplasticity, which helps our brains stay flexible. 37 But creatures like monkeys can’t do this and only learn during their adolescence.
Though there are many people who love learning, there are still plenty who can’t stand it. 38 Why is this Educational anthropologists have suggested that if a concept or idea is too complex or dull, it becomes harder to link old and new ideas together. 39 This negative experience of education at school may lead to people avoiding learning opportunities in later life.
40 Evolution has made us lifelong learners, so take advantage of your biology and discover your inner philomath. Who knows what you could achieve
A.Lots of people remember their school days as being boring or even pointless.
B.Because of this trait, our brains are able to recognize different shapes.
C.If that’s the case, we lose motivation and absorb less information.
D.If you’re also passionate about studying, you might be a philomath.
E.Many students think it is inspiring to learn something about “philomath”.
F.So, don’t let a bad educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult.
G.This gives us the ability to learn throughout our lives.

Carlo Rovelli’s book, There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness, offers a refreshing perspective on learning, urging readers to pursue curiosity and exploration without worrying about practical outcomes. Another key theme in the book is the connection between learning and wonder. Rovelli believes that curiosity is one of humanity’s greatest 50 , and he invites readers to cultivate it by exploring topics that arouse their interest. Whether it’s physics, art, philosophy, or even everyday experiences, the process of discovering something 51 can be deeply rewarding. He argues that this sense of wonder is what makes learning worthwhile — not the 52 it might bring.
Rovelli also emphasizes that learning should never be limited by rules or expectations. Instead, it should be a creative, 53 journey. He encourages readers to ask big questions, follow their interests, and take time to reflect on what they learn. By doing so, he believes we can 54 a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

A thousand miles can be used to describe something very long or very distant, either a dam or a journey. There are more than a dozen Chinese idioms 56 (use) the phrase “a thousand miles” in a figurative way. Here are two common ones that seem 57 (express) a similar idea.
The first one is “An ant’s hole may cause the collapse of a thousand-mile-long dam.” This saying comes from Han Feizi, one of the most important philosophical 58 (classic) in ancient China. It sounds quite similar to a 59 (know) quotation by American statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin, 60 warned about frittering money away by saying, “Beware of little expenses—a small leak will sink a great ship.”
61__ other Chinese idiom involving “a thousand miles” is a famous quotation from Lao Tzu, a top ancient Chinese philosopher, author of Daodejing, or the Tao Te Ching, and founder of Taoism, who lived during the later years of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). The philosopher once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins 62 a single step.” It’s true that if one doesn’t take the first step, a journey 63 (remain) a dream forever. This may also apply to the journey of life, an ambition or an understanding.
Both Chinese idioms indicate that something may seem like a small amount, 64 it adds up over time. In English, there are several expressions that echo this same point: “Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of 65 (they),” and “Little and often fills the purse.”

When you're a poor kid, you worry a lot about how you look, how much you're spending on clothes. I had problems. I wore high waters (露脚踝裤). And my shoes Forget about it. I had fake shoes— the kind your mother finds in supermarkets.
"John, here's one I like! Go find the other one that matches!" My mom shouted in the supermarket. Then, I followed her instruction and found it. However, it was only a three and a half, too small for me. Suddenly, an bad feeling took my heart. As expected, she convinced me that we could cut the toes to fit into it.
So there I am, pants too high, shoes too tight, underwear with holes. I was strange-looking in my neighborhood. It hits me: there is no way to get friends. So I had my mission: become cool. I persuaded myself that I dressed like that not because I was poor but because I was cooler than anyone else. So I totally changed. I hung out with bad boys. Cut class. By the time I got to high school, I had been getting in troubles all the time.
What I loved most was telling jokes. I liked keeping the kids laughing. Even the teachers laughed sometimes, which was the best part of my school time. See, I was still so out of it in a way — too cool to hang out with the nerds (书呆子). I figured my only value was to be funny. I enjoyed people enjoying my jokes. Maybe that's the only point where my self-recognition came from.
One day during my junior year, I was walking down the hallway, making jokes as usual, when Mr. Zufa, my math teacher, pulled me aside. I got criticized by teachers all the time, so I didn't think much about it.

【详解】36.空后“The word comes from Greek with “phil” meaning “a lover of” and “math” meaning “learning”.(这个词来自希腊语,“phil”意为“热爱的人”,“math”意为“学习”)”可知,空后一句是空处对应单词的解释,该单词为“philomath”,前文“Or are you more like Michael Nicholson, who can’t stop learning He currently has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a doctorate!(还是你更像迈克尔·尼科尔森,学个不停?他目前拥有30个学位,包括22个硕士学位和一个博士学位)”表明Michael Nicholson是十分热爱学习的人;D选项“If you’re also passionate about studying, you might be a philomath.(如果你对学习也充满热情,你可能会成为一个学习爱好者)”符合语境。故选D项。
37.由空前“This is a term that refers to the teenage characteristics of some animals, including humans, being preserved into adulthood. One of these traits is neuroplasticity, which helps our brains stay flexible.(这是一个术语,指的是一些动物,包括人类的青少年特征,被保存到成年。其中一个特征是神经可塑性,它帮助我们的大脑保持灵活)”说明动物中的神经可塑性能帮助大脑一直处于灵活状态,后文“While creatures like monkeys can’t do this and only learn during their adolescence.(而像猴子这样的动物不能做到这一点,只能在青春期学习)”表示猴子做不到,前后进行对比;G选项“This gives us the ability to learn throughout our lives.(这给了我们一生学习的能力)”中This表示前文的特征,能够帮助我们终身学习。故选G项。
38.空前“But for every person who loves learning, there are plenty who can’t stand it.(但是对于每一个热爱学习的人来说,也有很多人无法忍受学习)”表示热爱学习的人也有无法忍受的时候,空后“Why is this Educational anthropologists have suggested that if a concept or idea is too complex or dull, it becomes harder to link old and new ideas together.(为什么会这样?教育人类学家认为,如果一个概念或想法过于复杂或沉闷,就很难将新旧思想联系起来)”对空处的一种现象解释原因;A选项“Lots of people remember their school days as being boring or even pointless.(许多人记得他们的学生时代是无聊的,甚至是毫无意义的)”表明学生时代的学习有时候是无聊,甚至是无意义的,无法忍受的,符合语境。故选A项。
39.空前“Educational anthropologists have suggested that if a concept or idea is too complex or dull, it becomes harder to link old and new ideas together.(教育人类学家认为,如果一个概念或想法过于复杂或沉闷,就很难将新旧思想联系起来)”表明概念或者想法过于复杂或沉闷,会带来学习上的困难,空后“This negative experience of education at school may lead to people avoiding learning opportunities in later life.(这种消极的学校教育经历可能会导致人们在以后的生活中避免学习机会)”描述消极的学习经历会导致人们更不喜欢学习;C选项“If that’s the case, we lose motivation and absorb less information.(如果是这样的话,我们就会失去动力,吸收的信息也会减少)”为消极学习经历产生的结果,符合语境。故选C项。
40.此空需承上启下,总结前文。上一段在讲消极的学习经历,空后“Evolution has made us lifelong learners, so take advantage of your biology and discover your inner philomath.(进化使我们成为终身学习者,所以利用你的生理特征,发现你内心的学习爱好者)”表示我们应利用与生俱来的生理特点帮助学习;F选项“So, don’t let a bad educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult.(So, don’t let a bad educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult.(所以,不要让糟糕的教育经历阻碍你成年后学到新的东西)”为对于上文出现的改善消极学习经历的建议,符合此处语境。故选F项。

写作:
Dear Bill,
It’s great to hear from you! I’m glad to share my volunteer experience with you during the Chinese Culture Week at our school.
The purpose of this event was to promote Chinese culture and traditions to our fellow students and the local community. It featured various activities such as traditional dance performances, calligraphy workshops, and storytelling sessions. As a volunteer, I was responsible for greeting visitors, assisting with setups, and helping out during the events. I also participated in organizing the cultural activities and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. The experience was truly rewarding. I had the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds and share our rich cultural heritage. It was also a great way to enhance my communication and team work skills.
Can’t wait to hear about your experiences!
第二节(满分25分)
He did nothing at first but stared at me, eyes shining with appreciation and care. Strangeness invading my body, I had never seen any appreciation in teachers’ eyes. "Listen,” he said, "have you ever thought about being a comedian ” Numerous incidents that teachers blamed me flashing into my mind, I couldn't believe what was happening, thus pinching my lips. "Instead of being so rude, instead of wasting all energy, why not rechannel your hostility into something productive " He added. I didn't talk back to Mr. Zufa in a funny way like I usually would have. Instead, I nodded with tears coursing down. For the rest of the day, I couldn't get what he said out of my head.
After his encouragement, I changed a lot and was determined to pursue comedy. Shames of too-high pants, too-tight shoes and full-of-holes underwear finally gave way to the satisfaction with my funny stories being enjoyed. All endeavour to disguise myself as a cool boy by making troubles, cutting class and hanging out with bad boys transformed into studying days and nights. I was a really cool boy! Eventually, I got into New York University and studied films. Then I started my comedian career. I really appreciated that here was a person who was able to find beauty inside me. How cool it is!
