Step 1 Review
Activity 1 Review
1. Revise the usages of the present participle used as the predicative and the attribute.
2. Check the answers to the grammar exercises in reference book.

Activity 2 Pre-listening
1. Introduce the background information.
What do you know about Christmas
Christmas is a holiday in many countries. It is celebrated on December 25. Many homes have Christmas trees and other decorations. Festive activities include exchanging presents, singing songs and going to parties.
2. Look at the pictures and introduce the names of the foods.

Activity 3 While-listening
1. Go through the listening questions. And then listen to Song Lin and Max’s conversation twice and answer the questions.
1) What festival is Max talking about
Max is talking about his Christmas experience with his family.
2) What did Max do during the festival
He decorated the Christmas tree and put presents under it. Then he helped his mum prepare for the family dinner on Christmas Eve.
3) What dishes did Max’s mother cook
She cooked roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, Christmas pudding, and apple pie.
4) What did Max and his family do during and after the dinner
They shared stories and told jokes during the dinner. They played games with the children afterwards.
5) What was the best part of the festival
The best part was opening their presents on Christmas morning.
2. Listen again and tick the phrases that Max or Song Lin uses.

Activity 4 Post-listening
Listen to the recording to understand it better and then try to use the above information to reconstruct the listening text by summarizing the content of the text.

Activity 5 Role-playing the conversation
1. Read the conversation and underline the phrases that express feelings about festivals. And talk what Song Lin and Joe like and dislike about the Chinese New Year.
Song Lin likes the food, the parades and the beautiful fireworks. He likes spending time with his family, but he feels boring after staying in his hometown for a while.
Joe loves watching the traditional performances and the delicious meals, but he feels annoyed about the fireworks going off throughout the night.
2. Learn about few new words.
1) pleased adj. 高兴的;满意的
please vt. 使高兴;使满意

pleasure n.高兴;快乐;满意)

2) frank adj.坦率的;直率的
to be frank/frankly speaking/frankly坦白说;坦率地说

5) except for 除……之外

Activity 6 Talking about festival experiences
1. Share a recent festival experience with your partner and tell him/her how you felt about the festival and why. And prepare a presentation by using the questions and tips as guidance.
Questions to answer:
What do you think of the Chinese New Year or other Chinese festivals
What do you usually do during the festival
What do you like or dislike Why
Tips to follow:
Decide what festival you will talk about.
Make a list of everything you experienced during the festival.
Write down the key words about your feelings.
List the reasons why you felt that way.
2. Give a presentation. Choose a few students to give a presentation, talking about their festival experiences.

Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects.
1. How is your listening comprehension (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor)
