Comprehensive teaching and learning objectives:
By the end of this period, the students will have been able to:
1) Read and get the detailed information to comprehend the fable;
2) Practise writing a review of the fable.

Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Review
Activity 1 Review
Review how to tell a story and revise the expressions and new language items learned in the previous period.
Step 2 Reading for writing
Activity 2 Pre-reading
Introduce the features of a fable:
It’s a kind of traditional short story.
It teaches a moral lesson.
It’s usually a story with animals as characters.
These stories are always considered as a group. For example, Aesop’s Fables.
Activity 3 Reading comprehension
1. Read or listen to the fable and then answer the questions.
1) What was the king’s idea for teaching an important lesson to his people
He put a huge stone in the middle of a road, and watched to see if anyone would move it.
2) What was the response from most of the people
Most of the people just got upset that the stone was in their way, but they did nothing with it.
3) What did the young girl think and do when she saw the coins
She thought that the money belonged to someone else and that it should be returned.
2. Complete the table according to the story, using the detailed information from the reading passage.

1) What do you think this fable is trying to tell us (Do you think the king was wise Why or why not )
Suggested answers: The moral of the story is that we should all take responsibility for our community. I don’t think that the king was very wise, however, because no one learnt anything from his experiment. The milkman, the woman with her water pot, and the other villagers continued on their travels without having changed their attitudes at all. The king did find one responsible young girl, but she was already a responsible person before she encountered the stone in the road.
2) Can you think of times in your own life when you felt and acted like the girl or like the other people in the story Give examples.
Suggested answers: There have been times when I have acted responsibly like the girl in the story. For example, I recently saw some children playing on a dangerous balcony, and so I warned them it was dangerous and had them go somewhere else to play. However, often I’m more like the milkman in the story because I’m very busy with my own work and worries.
Activity 4 Reconstruct the text
Reconstruct the text by retelling the story and summarizing the moral lesson/ implied meaning.

1. Talk about how to write a review of the fable by using the outline below.

Sample 1
“The Stone in the Road” is an old fable about a king who thinks his people are lazy. He puts a large stone in the middle of the road and hides and waits to see if anyone will try to move it.
The author used this story to impress upon readers the need to take personal responsibility for problems in the community. The story was quite successful in achieving its purpose, and I liked it because it had a clear moral.
However, while the moral of the story is clear, the actions of the king seemed pointless to me, because none of the characters in the story learnt anything. For this reason, I think there are better stories that can be used to impress upon people the need for personal responsibility.
Sample 2
Waiting for Another Hare is a fable about a farmer in ancient times who accidentally got a hare killed on a tree stump. From then on, he dropped his hoe and waited beside the stump all day long.
The purpose of the author is to tell us: Only through their own labour can people gain something. Or they will eventually get nothing, leaving a lifetime of regret. The fable is short, but the thread is clear, and it fully serves the author’s purpose of warning the world.
I like this fable as a reminder: don’t do things by accident. I would like to recommend this fable to you.
Activity 6 Writing practice
1. Read through the evaluation criteria and try to use them as writing standards.
2. Practicing writing a review of the fable.
3. (If time permits,) Exchange drafts with a partner. Use the checklist to help you revise the draft.
Step 4 Evaluation and summary

Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects.
