I recently went on my first overseas vacation to Greece. I was with my in-laws and my wife and naturally, we went to restaurants whenever we were hungry. Having lived in North America for my entire life, I had certain expectations of restaurants: You go in, peruse the menu, place your order, get your food, eat it, pay, tip, and go on your way. I knew that European countries did not generally participate in tipping culture, but I didn’t understand how that fundamentally altered the entire business interaction.
Whenever we finished eating, we would relax with the dishes that we were very obviously done with, chat for a bit, and wait for the bill. Wait, wait, and wait!
This happened at every restaurant we went to: After we were done and ready to pay and leave, we would end up waiting twenty or thirty minutes to actually get the bill and pay. We absolutely could not figure it out! The servers seemed to be so attentive to everyone else in the restaurants, the locals, but for the obvious group of tourists, we were just left to wait, wait, and wait! It was actually getting frustrating!
I finally figured it out on the last day of our trip, watching the locals. When the locals finished their meals, they would not pay immediately, Instead, they would sit and chat, and just sort of… hang out. They would pay when they were ready to leave, and no one would hustle (催促) them out of there. Because the servers weren’t working for pennies and dependent on tips, they had no reason to move people along. Everyone was allowed to move at their own pace, pay when they were ready to pay, and leave when they were ready to leave. The servers would expect the customers to approach or signal them that they were done, rather than checking every few minutes to get things moving. What a novel experience! I wish we had figured it out sooner.
4. What does the underlined word “peruse” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Glance quickly. B. Read hesitantly. C. Study carefully. D. Changing randomly.
5 Why did the author find the restaurant experience upsetting at first
A. The servers ignored the needy tourists. B. They had to wait too long to pay the bill.
C. The food failed to live up to their expectations. D. They were served their food later than expected.
6. How did the locals signal that they were ready to leave
A. They tipped the servers generously. B. They gave the servers a unique gesture.
C. They waited for the servers to check on them. D. They called the server to the table when ready.
7. In which column of a news website can we read this text
A. Diet and health. B. Food and culture. C. Sports and fitness. D. Morals and virtues.

Workers, especially “knowledge workers” who can work from anywhere, have been fighting for more control over their time. While working from home in 2020 and 2021, they demonstrated to their bosses that they are able to maintain, or in some cases even increase their productivity while working flexibly. Their bosses, on the other hand, have been pulling them in the opposite direction, fighting to get workers back into the offices. This struggle has led to a significant number of employees quitting or the “Great Resignation”.
While these issues have gained attention recently, they are not new. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, resignations have been steadily increasing for more than a decade.
Part of the reason for this increase, it seems, is that workers have been considering the kinds of lives they want and reflecting on the role they want work to play in their lives. The reality is that people spend a lot of their lives working, and because of that, people’s day-to-day work experiences have a substantial impact on how satisfied they are with their lives.
Does having control over their time actually make workers happier and more likely to stay in their jobs To find out, we analyzed survey data from a wide group of people. We found that those with more control over their time had the highest job satisfaction and overall happiness. In contrast, people who felt they never had enough time reported less satisfaction with both work and life.
These findings suggest that job satisfaction relies more on having control over time than on the amount of work done. Employees seek flexibility to better manage their personal and professional lives, such as fitting in exercise. Employers should listen to workers and develop flexible policies, including remote and hybrid (混合的) options. This can lead to more satisfied employees and help companies keep their best talent. Ultimately, when employees feel they have control over their time, they tend to be happier at work and in life.
8. Why are bosses resisting remote work probably
A. They fear productivity loss. B. They undervalue face-to-face interaction.
C. They can control their employees’ emotions. D. They believe remote work causes dissatisfaction.
9. What does the “Great Resignation” suggest
A. Workers seek higher pay. B. Companies are reducing salaries.
C. Workers want more vacation time. D. Employees desire a better work-life balance.
10. What might happen to remote work in the future from the last paragraph
A. It will become less common. B. Companies will only allow office work.
C. More companies will adopt flexible policies. D. It will remain limited to demanding jobs.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The rise of remote and flexible work policies.
B. The importance of engaging work environments.
C. The reasons for the “Great Resignation” and its effects.
D. The role of time control in improving workers’ happiness.
D
More than 1,000 meters below the surface of the oceans, it’s very dark. For animals living in this darkness, vision is irrelevant; sound signals, instead, are how they navigate, communicate and search for food.
That way of life has come under threat from decades of increasing human noise. A big reason is shipping, which is causing the underwater noise level to go up by about 3.3 decibels (分贝)every ten years.
With roughly 90% of traded goods travelling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping itself is impractical. Efforts to make ships more efficient, and therefore less polluting, are also likely to reduce noise. But experts say those measures will not do enough to restore quiet.
That is why a range of technologies are being developed — from changed propeller (螺旋桨) designs to noise reduction materials — that could allow humans and other animals to co-exist in the ocean.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller. As the blades (叶片) move, areas of low pressure are formed in their wake which cause the water to boil and produce bubbles, a process known as cavitation (空化现象). When those bubbles break, a low-frequency noise is produced. Such noise can travel thousands of meters underwater without losing strength, interfering with the movements of blue and humpback whales which use these frequencies to communicate.
One solution, being developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), includes special materials into the metal propeller blades, allowing their tips — one of the main sites of cavitation — to bend and turn. This movement prevents bubbles from forming and thereby reduces the noise the blades produce, says Rajeev Jaiman of UBC. Based on simulations, the design could reduce cavitation noise by 20 decibels.
But shipping noise does not come only from the propeller. Roughly 20% comes from the ship itself, as engines and generators work and the ship’s components shake. At low speeds, this percentage rises. To fix the issue, researchers have experimented other methods.
12. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To provide some examples. B. To add some backgrounds.
C. To introduce the importance of the deep sea. D. To highlight the role of vision for sea animals.
13. Why is reducing shipping noise considered difficult
A. Most shipping routes cannot be changed.
B. The volume of sea trade makes it unrealistic.
C. Efforts to reduce noise would harm trade efficiency.
D. Current technologies cannot lower noise effectively.
14. What can be inferred about the new propeller design
A. It removes all the noise from ships. B. It relies on generators to reduce shaking.
C. It stops bubbles by slowing down the blades. D. It uses flexible tips to minimize noise production.
15. What may be talked about in the following text
A. Other technologies to reduce shipping noise.
B. Ways to improve the efficiency of ship engines.
C. The benefits of reducing underwater noise for humans.
D. The effects of noise pollution on small marine creatures.

One afternoon, I saw Mrs. Thompson, my elderly neighbor, carrying a heavy bag of groceries. She moved slowly, her face showing effort with each step. I had seen her around often, but I had never thought she might need help.
I walked over quickly. “Mrs. Thompson, let me carry that for you,” I said.
She looked up, smiling faintly. “Thank you, dear. That’s very kind of you,” she said, handing me the bag.
As we walked to her house, she told me stories about her late husband and how things used to be. She spoke warmly about the life they had shared, though her tone carried a little sadness.
When we reached her house, I helped her inside. “Would you like some tea ” she asked with a friendly smile.
I agreed, and she headed to the kitchen. I sat in the living room, looking at the family photos on the wall. The house felt peaceful, but after a few minutes, I heard a soft gasp (喘息). I hurried to the kitchen and found Mrs. Thompson holding onto the counter, her hand pressed to her chest.
“Are you alright ” I asked, alarmed. “I’m fine, just a bit tired,” she said, forcing a smile. But her face looked pale, and I could tell something wasn’t right.
I stayed with her until she seemed better and then left, feeling uneasy. The next day, I went to check on her after school. I knocked on her door, but there was no answer. I knocked again, louder, but still nothing.
Worried, I decided to call her daughter, whose number I found in an old community directory. After a few rings, she picked up.
“Hello ” she said. “Hi, I’m your mom’s neighbor,” I explained. “I just wanted to check on her. She didn’t answer the door today.” Her voice grew tense. “Oh, thank you for calling. Momhas been feeling unwell lately, but she doesn’t like to tell anyone.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing this, I realized Mrs. Thompson needed more support than she was willing to admit.

【答案】Dear editor,
After the winter break, many students are suffering from Post-Holiday Syndrome, showing symptoms like fatigue, lack of focus, and low mood. This phenomenon likely stems from irregular routines during the holiday.
To address this, I suggest the following: Firstly, adjust sleep schedules gradually to readapt to school life. Secondly, create a balanced timetable with study and relaxation to avoid burnout. Lastly, engage in physical activities to refresh both body and mind. Let’s support each other through this transition.
Yours

Hearing this, I realized Mrs. Thompson needed more support than she was willing to admit. I offered to stay until her daughter arrived. While waiting, I made her a cup of tea and ensured she rested comfortably on the sofa. When her daughter finally came, we decided to take Mrs. Thompson to the hospital immediately. At the hospital, the doctor confirmed she had a mild heart issue requiring rest and care. From that day on, I visited her regularly, helping with groceries and listening to her stories. Gradually, our bond deepened, and she began opening up about her loneliness since her husband’s passing.
That moment changed how we both viewed life. For Mrs. Thompson, accepting help became a step toward healing, and she started joining community activities. For me, the experience taught the importance of small acts of kindness in bridging generational gaps. Our unexpected friendship blossomed, reminding us both that human connection could turn solitary moments into shared warmth. Now, whenever I see someone struggling, I remember how a simple offer to carry groceries can transform lives.
