Imagine a potter(陶工), sitting quietly on a small chair, holding soft clay(黏土) in his hands, sculpting it as he spins the pottery wheel. The clay’s fate is completely in the potter’s hands. A skilled potter would turn it into a beautiful container but the same clay, when handed to a green hand, may be ruined.
Just as the potter shapes clay into containers, our lives are shaped by the hands of our surroundings — the people we meet, the places we go, each conversation and every experience shape us into who we are.
Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the top 5 people you spend your most time with.” Now think about the company you keep — the ones who share your joys, wipe tears away and share your dreams. Every part of you is nothing but their average.
Back in middle school, most of my classmates didn’t quite match my level of intellect (智力). More often than not, I stood out from them; although it felt really satisfying, it somehow lacked the challenge I desired. It wasn’t until I started high school that I found what I was searching for.
High school did feel frightening at first. I found myself surrounded by brighter, wiser and prettier faces than I ever imagined. I felt inadequate compared to them, but it was in that discomfort that I found growth.
To grow, you got to be with people who stand out in areas where you fall short, those who inspire you to learn and improve. Just as tough competition pushes athletes to stand out, great people bring out the best in you. So, find your people, people who’ll inspire and uplift you, who have qualities you want. They wouldn’t simply hand you success but force you to lift yourself higher and higher.
But if negativity surrounds you, don’t expect positive changes in your life. If you’re always with people who see nothing but reasons why things can’t be done, then that will also become your reality.
24. What does the author compare our surroundings to
A. The potter. B. The clay. C. The pottery wheel. D. The container.

A. People who motivate them to advance.
B. People who match their level of intellect.
C. People who work in the same area as they do.
D. People who share happiness and sorrow with them.
27. What is the message conveyed in the text
A. Toughness leads to success. B. Positivity outweighs hard work.
C. Birds of a feather gather together. D. Success loves a successful company.
C
Climate change is stressing rainforests where the highly sensitive cocoa bean grows, but chocolate lovers need not despair, say companies that are researching other ways to grow cocoa or develop cocoa substitutes (替代品).
California Cultured, a plant cell culture company, is growing cocoa from cell cultures at a facility in West Sacramento, California, with plans to start selling its products next year. It puts cocoa bean cells and sugar water together so they reproduce quickly and reach maturity in a week rather than the six to eight months a traditional harvest takes, said Alan Perlstein, the company’s chief executive. The process also no longer requires as much water or labor.
The sales of chocolate candy around the world reached $ 238.5 billion in 2023, research website Statista reported. Sales in the United States alone reached more than $ 25 billion in 2023, the National Confectioners Association said. The price of cocoa rose quickly earlier this year because of demand and troubles with the crop in West Africa due to plant diseases and changes in weather. The region produces the most of the world’s cocoa.
The push to produce cocoa indoors in the US comes after other products, such as chicken meat, have already been grown in labs. It also comes as supermarket shelves fill with snack options — something that developers of cocoa alternatives say shows people are ready to try what looks and tastes like a chocolate chip cookie even if the chip contains a cocoa substitute.
While some are seeking to create alternative cocoa sources and substitutes, others are trying to improve the supply of cocoa where it naturally grows. Mars, which makes M& Ms and Snickers, has a research facility at University of California, Davis aimed at making cocoa plants more resilient so that they are able to recover more easily and quickly from unpleasant environments, said Joanna Hwu, the company’s senior director of cocoa plant science. The facility hosts a living collection of cocoa trees so scientists can study what makes them resistant to more diseases to help farmers in producing countries and ensure a stable supply of beans.
28. What can we say about products from California Cultured
A. They are produced at a quick speed. B. They have been on sale.
C. They require more labor to make. D. They contain no water.
29. What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 3
A. West Africa is facing an economic crisis.
B. The worldwide market for chocolate is huge.
C. The US produces the most cocoa in the world.
D. The supply of chocolate goes beyond its demand.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning chicken meat
A. A reason for eating less chocolate. B. An inspiration for cocoa substitutes.
C. A method of keeping a balanced diet. D. A cause of picking more types of meat.
31. How does Mars deal with the challenge facing cocoa trees
A. By creating their alternatives. B. By growing them somewhere else.
C. By increasing their resistance. D. By planting them in large numbers.
D
Drinking some alcohol (酒) was once thought to have benefits for the heart, but better research methods have thrown cold water on that. “Drinking less is a great way to be healthier,” said Dr. Timothy Naimi, who directs the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
Guidelines vary a lot from country to country but the overall trend is toward drinking less. The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Holland and Australia recently reviewed new evidence and lowered their alcohol consumption recommendations. Ireland will require cancer warning labels on alcohol starting in 2026.
“People of my age are way more accepting of it,” said Tessa Weber, 28, of Austin, Texas. She stopped drinking this year because she’d noticed alcohol was increasing her anxiety. She liked the results — better sleep, more energy — and has stuck with it. “It’s good to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol,” Weber said.
How many drinks can you have per day That depends. Drinking raises the risk of several types of cancer, including colon, liver, breast and mouth and throat. Alcohol breaks down in the body into a substance called acetaldehyde, which can damage your cells and stop them from repairing themselves. That creates the conditions for cancer to grow.
“Thousands of US deaths per year could be prevented if people followed the government’s dietary guidelines, which advise men to limit themselves to two drinks or fewer per day and women to one drink or fewer per day,” Naimi said. One drink is the equivalent of about one12 - ounce (盎司) can of beer, a 5 - ounce glass of wine or a shot of liquor.
Naimi served on an advisory committee that wanted to lower the recommendation for men to one drink per day. That advice was considered and rejected when the federal recommendations came out in 2020. “The simple message that’s best supported by the evidence is that, if you drink, less is better when it comes to health,” Naimi said.
32. What is Tessa Weber’s attitude to the new guideline on alcohol drinking
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
33. What do we know about acetaldehyde
A. It encourages people to drink less.
B. It benefits the repairs of heart cells.
C. It keeps alcohol from breaking down.
D. It contributes to the growth of cancer.
34. How much alcohol is a man recommended to drink at most per day by the US government
A. A 5-ounce glass of wine. B. A-6-ounce can of beer.
C. A 10-ounce glass of wine. D. A 12-ounce can of beer.
35 What is the best title for the text
A. New Research on Types of Cancer
B. Alcoholics Are on the Rise in the US
C. Risks and Benefits of Drinking Alcohol
D. Less Alcohol Is Better for Health

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often want to send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. ____36____ The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. ____37____
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education given to their children is usually very cheap. ____38____ Some children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children are badly off for self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple — choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.
____39____ For example, teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully step by step. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to repair them. ____40____ These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
A. Parents can see that their children’s skills differ.
B. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills.
C. The more cost in education, the better the result will be.
D. Your child might become an engineer when he grows up.
E. Thus, parents usually think computers are more convenient for kids’ learning.
F. For instance, even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
G. They also want their children to take extra-course activities to get a head start in life.

I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would shoe or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secrets hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.

Suddenly there was a sound in the bush. Out of the growth flew this battered dog right into my father’s arms. Spider had leaped over the tennis court fence with great force and certainty. My father’s eyes shone, and the old lady and I stood there with tears in our eyes. He kept licking my father’s face and making choking noises. He smelt dreadful. We wrapped him in an old blanket and I held him on my lap on the way back. He never once took his eyes off my father as we drove home. Every so often I received a lick of gratefulness.
Once home we had the trash of getting all the prick es (刺) off him. Before he was put in a tin tub, we gently cleaned him up with soap. Spider stood stoically through all this as my father also examined his teeth and ears. Spider spent the rest of his days—years -on the front porch, content and satisfied, always in wait for my sister and me coming home from school where he would give us a lot of licks to make sure we were all right. He then waited for my father by the garage door. We never left him anywhere alone again.
