Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined. Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.”
4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall
A. His dream of being a hero. B. Terrible damage caused by tourists.
C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from other villagers.
5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed.
6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian
A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous.
C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed.
7. What does Mei expect of the Shixiaguan part of the wall
A. The success of their projects can involve more people.
B. Their protection projects will promote the local tourism.
C. Their hard work can make a difference for historical research.
D. The experience of their projects will benefit others a lot.
C
On December 26, 2004, an earthquake along the Indian Ocean caused a huge tsunami that killed thousands of people in Asia and East Africa. However, wildlife officials at Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park, which is home to hundreds of wild animals, reported no mass animal deaths.
Some researchers believe the animals are able to sense the earthquake and move to higher ground before the earthquake hit. Animals have good senses that help protect themselves from their natural enemies. It is thought that their senses might also help them sense the coming disasters. Several countries have done research on the prediction (预测) of earthquakes by animals. There are two theories about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes. One theory is that animals sense the earth’s shake. The other is that they can sense changes in the air. However, so far there has been no strong evidence about how animals may be able to sense earthquakes.
Other researchers are skeptical (怀疑) about using animals for earthquake predictions. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) officially states, “Even though there have been many cases of unusual animal behaviors before earthquakes, a connection between a specific behavior and an earthquake has not been made. Because of their fine senses, animals can often feel the earthquake at its earliest stages before the humans. That’s why people say that the animal knew the earthquake was coming. But animals can also change their behaviors for many other reasons.”
Although scientists disagree on whether animal behaviors can be used to predict earthquakes, they all agree that it is possible for animals to sense changes in the environment before humans. Researchers around the world are continuing to study the connection between animal behaviors and earthquakes. It is hoped that these studies will help to predict earthquakes.
8. What do we know about animals’ senses
A. They can change the environment.
B. They can protect animals in some ways.
C. They can help people predict earthquake.
D. They can prevent animals acting strangely.
9. What can we learn according to what USGS states in paragraph 3
A. Animal behaviors are closely connected to earthquake prediction.
B. Animal disaster predictions can be observed before the disasters.
C. Changes in animal behaviors cannot be used to predict earthquakes.
D. Researches about using animals for disaster predictions are worthless.
10. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to scientists’ study
A. Disappointed. B. Hopeful. C. Uninterested. D. Skeptical.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. How Can Earthquakes Cause Tsunami
B. Should We Study Animals’ Behavior
C. What Functions Do Animals’ Senses Have
D. Can Animals Predict Earthquakes

Handwriting notes in class might seem old-fashioned as smartphones and other digital technology include every part of learning across schools. But a recent study in Frontiers in Psychology suggests it is still the best way to learn especially for young children. And now scientists are focusing on why.
The new research is based on a 2014 study that suggested people may type notes quickly, without thinking much about what they’re writing and although writing by hand is slower, it makes them actively focus on and process the incoming information. This way of building on existing knowledge can make it easier for students to stay interested and understand new ideas more easily.
To understand specific brain-activity differences during the two note-taking methods, the researchers of the new study put 256 electrodes (电极) into a hairnet, which let the scientists record 36 students’ brain activity as they wrote or typed words. When students wrote by hand, the electrodes picked up widespread brain connectivity. Typing, however, resulted in little activity in brain areas.
Vanderbilt University educational neuroscientist Sophia Vinci-Booher says the recent study stresses the clear tie between bodily movements and understanding ideas. “As you’re writing a word, you’re taking this continuous understanding of something and creating it.” That creation then affects and strengthens the connection between an action and the words concerning it.
Vinci-Booher notes that the new findings doesn’t mean technology is always a disadvantage in the classroom. Digital tools can be more helpful for writing papers and offer more equal educational opportunities. However, more and more people are relying on digital tools to perform cognitive (认知的) tasks, such as taking photos instead of memorizing information. Yadurshana Sivashankar, a researcher at the University of Waterloo says, “If we’re not actively using these areas, then they are going to become worse over time.”
12. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By raising an opinion. B. By giving an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By stating a research result.
13. What can be learned from the experiment in paragraph 3
A. Writing by hand uses more brain power than typing.
B. Electrodes were only used to record typing words.
C. Electrodes were connected to students’ hair directly.
D. Typing made the brain connectivity more active.
14. What would Sophia Vinci-Booher probably advise students to do
A. Take advantage of digital tools. B. Memorize words by writing.
C. Use a new way to taking notes. D. Make better use of technology.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Technology is an advantage in classroom.
B. Taking notes improves students’ brain activity.
C Writing by hand comes with learning benefits.
D. Two note-taking methods have clear differences.

This Friday brought a mix of emotions — both excitement and disappointment — all because of a flyer (传单) from school. When I got home, Mum saw the flyer in my hand and asked, “What’s this ”
“A flyer for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can’t go.”
“Would you like to attend ” Mum asked. “You’ve always loved art.” Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier, “Tessa, you’re the real artist.” I sighed. Mum patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year.”
“Maybe,” I said in a low voice. Then I told Mum I wanted to go outside to draw the pine tree (松树) in Weston’s garden.
As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. What if I had been braver Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat in a heavy storm when I stood by strangers... By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp.
I began by drawing the pine tree’s strong and straight trunk (树干), and then added the branches (树枝), making sure the upper ones lifted gently towards the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr. Weston speak up, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled.
As I drew the needles (松针) to the branches, Mr. Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. Their roots grow out, not down—to get enough water and grow tall.
“You have a good eye, Tessa.” With these words, Mr. Weston nodded goodbye.

(1)续写词数应为150-180左右;

Dear Fish,
I’m rather glad to share with you how to improve spoken English.
First, practice makes perfect. Try to speak English as much as possible, even if it’s just to yourself. Joining an English club or finding a language partner can also provide more opportunities to converse. Listening to English podcasts, music, and watching movies in English can help you get familiar with native pronunciation and intonation. Imitating their speech can further enhance your accent. Additionally, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learning is a process, and every mistake is a step towards improvement.
Now, I have a question for you. Do you have any tips on how to remember new vocabulary effectively I often forget words shortly after learning them.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】范文
His words made me think about myself a lot. As I reflected on his wisdom, I realized that I had been burying my own roots too deep, suffocating my growth and potential, no matter how often I was told about my talent in drawing. I had always unknowingly turned a deaf ear, forgetting to spread my roots outward, to seek nourishment and reach for the sky. Encouraged by Mr. Weston’ s words, I decided to reassess my approach to life and started branching out.
The next Monday, I signed up for the camp. Once I was there, I discovered that I didn’t have to be like Emily, jumping into some unfamiliar faces around to prove I was a real artist. From landscapes to portraits, and water color to oil painting, each brushstroke on the canvas was proof and brought me a lot of attention I had never experienced before. I began to make friends with other kids, the boat in my stomach rocking gently in calm waters. It was here that I truly flourished, drawing my own way to reach out for a whole new world.
