Police today stepped up a murder probe after a father was killed by a gang. They attacked him with an axe.
John Purcell, 40, suffered fatal injuries in the incident in Easterhouse, Glasgow on Saturday evening…moments after he had said goodbye to his children. His youngest son John, 11, was being comforted by his mum Elizabeth Malcolm after witnessing the street horror. The father-of-three was attacked around 10:30 in Easterhouse Road.
Young John said, “My father was struck from behind with something that looked like a chopper.” John, his sister Danielle, 15, and bother William, 19, have been left devastated and placed a floral tribute(葬礼献花) at the attack scene in memory of their dad. Elizabeth Malcolm said, “We are all in shock about what had happened. When he left here he usually turned left down the road, but for some reason on Saturday he went in the opposite direction which is where the gang members always hang out.”
“We have been apart for a number of years, but John always remained close to his children and this has hit them hard,” she said.
Police officers initially sealed off the area for forensic examination but later allowed his relatives to lay flowers. Following a post-mortem(尸检报告), Mr. Purcell's death is being treated as murder. He had been taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Hospital but died from his severe injuries. We all know how important human life is—it's priceless. It doesn't matter where you are from or what the color of your skins is—all people are human beings. Firstly, we can tell you that the lives of your relatives could depend on your ability to give first aid. If you think highly of human's life, this website is for you! Here you can find information about first aid.
The very first thing that you should do when you see an accident is to evaluate the situation and prevent further dangerous incidents. First of all, you have to recognize what has happened and what the dangers to rescuers and victims are. Think about how to take care of the victims.
Helping usually takes place in very difficult conditions and injuries can be very bad. Therefore, you cannot be too afraid of making mistakes to help. Sometimes you have to face the fact that regardless of your actions and your efforts the victim's condition might not improve—he or she could even die. In some cases even professional medical aid may not succeed. If you have done everything you think you should do, you shouldn't feel guilty.
Do not expose yourself to danger. Giving first aid can be dangerous. While trying to help a victim, do not forget about your own safety. If something happens to you, you won't be able to help anyone.
Call for help after you find out the condition of a victim. But remember if a victim faints due to breathing failure caused by drowning, choking or poisoning, you should first take actions that help to bring back the heart beat and breathing. While calling, talk shortly but clearly. Always provide the following information: the location of the accident, the kind of accident, the number of the injured and your full name and phone number and so on.

Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal(致命的). It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies. What to do?
If you are the first person to reach to victims who have had an electric shock, don't touch them!
If they are still holding the appliance(家用电器) that has given them shock (e.g.a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!
If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victims from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.
The victims must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine(脊柱) injuries unless it is absolutely necessary.
It is essential to maintain the victims' body heat, so make sure you cover them with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victims are not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(复苏). Keep the victims' heads low until professional help arrives.
If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victims and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.
103. What is the text mainly about?
A. An advertisement. B. A horror story.
C. A news report. D. First aid emergency advice.

D. it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hand
105. When a person has got an electric shock, you should ?.

M: I guess it's because she has a good sense of humor. She always knows how to make others laugh.
W: I want to be funnier, but I don't know how. People must think I'm boring.
M: I have to admit you don't know how to make others laugh.
W: People like hanging out with you, too, and you often make people laugh. So tell me - how can I be funnier?
M: Well, first, you have to learn to laugh. You rarely laugh, you know. Second, if you hear other people laughing, just ask them why they're laughing. They'll tell you what's so funny, and you can figure out what makes other people laugh. Third, just spend lots of time with fun people, people who like to play.
W: That's really great advice - I will definitely try all that.
M: Oh, and of course, always look for humor in a bad situation.
(Text 9)
W: Why are you back so late, Mike? It's already half past six. You should have been home half an hour ago.
M: Sorry, Mom. There was a traffic accident.
W: What? Did you get hurt?
M: Don't worry. I'm fine. I just saw the traffic accident happen.
W: So what happened?
M: A car hit a truck. When I got there, I found that both the car driver and the truck driver were injured.
W: Could you do anything for their injuries?
M: No, I was afraid that I'd hurt them further if I moved them. But I ran as fast as I could to the nearest house and told the man there what had happened. Amazingly, he's a doctor. He grabbed his first-aid kit and ran back with me. He took care of their injuries and then dialed 911.
W: Were they taken to the hospital?
M: Yes. The police and an ambulance came about ten minutes later.
W: Mike, I'm so proud of you. Now go and wash your hands. Supper's ready.
M: OK, Mom. I'm really starving now.
(Text 10)
This morning, I was walking home down Seventh Avenue. As I was getting close to the supermarket, I saw a small crowd around an elderly woman. The woman was lying face down on the sidewalk. There was blood under her knees. I stopped and asked if I could help out. A young girl was calling 911; a young man told me the elderly woman had just tripped on the sidewalk and fallen onto the ground face down. I told the woman I was certified in first aid and asked if I could help her. Then I sent someone to the supermarket for a first-aid kit.
The woman was 80 years old and she was alone. People brought out ice packs from the gym nearby, water and paper towels from the supermarket. I put on the gloves from the first-aid kit, and cleaned her up a bit. Two doctors happened to be passing by and they stopped to help. We helped her sit up and then moved her to a bench. Finally, after ten minutes the ambulance arrived. She was taken to hospital. I picked up my bags and walked home, feeling very happy that I could help.
