Breanna Bond weighed 186 pounds by the time she was 9 years old. The extra weight made it difficult for her to breathe and move around. The California girl soon became a target for bullies(横行霸道者). "Everybody at school would call me names," she said. "They would call me fatty and they would call me fat head."
"Her doctor always said that she'd grow into her body and then, after a while, we went and got other doctors' opinions," Breanna's mother, Heidi Bond of Clovis, California, said today on Good Morning America (GMA), "We had her tested and everything came out fine, so we knew at that point we had to step things up."
Heidi and Breanna's father, Dan Bond, decided to take matters into their own hands. Heidi Bond designed an exercise routine for her daughter and the entire family. They began to walk the 4mile trail near their home.
"There was nothing that stopped us," Heidi Bond said. "We went at night, in the rain, in the hail, in the fog, nothing. We had a zerotolerance policy. We're doing the walk, no matter what." Before long, Breanna had lost 37 pounds. In less than a year, her weight loss totaled 66 pounds.
"I can be involved in sports and I can keep up with my friends when we're playing," Breanna said on GMA of her favorite aspect of her weight loss. "I can just move more."
"She is an inspiration to the world and all children who are having weight issues across America. You can do it with a pair of tennis shoes and motivation," Breanna's mother said.
The Bonds offered three tips for other parents who are looking to keep their children healthy: start as soon as possible, exercise and enforce healthy eating habits.

Say sorry to your wife—it may help her live longer, according to scientists.
“Sorry” may be the hardest word, but scientists say it could be one of the healthiest. Researchers have discovered that women who receive an apology for hurtful behavior suffer less stress and possible damage to their heart than those who don't.
It is said that the heartbeat of a wronged woman returns to normal 20 percent quicker after a well-timed “sorry” than without it. But for men, their heartbeat takes longer to recover, according to the research.
The research was undertaken by American scientists using 29 men and 59 women whose diastolic blood pressure was measured throughout an experiment. Diastolic blood pressure is a measure of pressure in the blood vessels(血管) between heartbeats—if it is continuously high it can increase the chances of heart attacks.
The men and women were asked to undertake a difficult mathematical task. They were told they had five minutes to complete it but were disturbed after a minute and told rudely to carry out the task more quickly. They were disturbed twice more before five minutes had passed and told to speed up. Finally they were told, “You're obviously not good enough.” Two minutes later researchers said sorry to half of the men and women.
The researchers found that, on average, the women's diastolic blood pressure dropped back to normal 20 percent—quicker if they received an apology from the researchers, while the men's took 20 percent longer to return to normal. One of the researchers said, “Results indicates that the effects of apology and forgiveness on women are greater.”
100. The term “sorry” is considered as one of the healthiest words because it ?.
A. is the most powerful
B. can cure heart disease
C. helps people forget hurtful behavior
D. can reduce pressure and damage to the heart
101. We can know from Paragraph 3 ?.

B. women are quicker at making apologies
C. men can forgive others' mistakes more easily than women
D. men stay angry for a longer time than women after receiving an apology
102. Which of the following is the RIGHT time order for events in the study?
A. Half of them received apologies.
B. They were disturbed a minute later.
C. They were told that they weren't good enough.
D. They were asked to finish a math task in five minutes.
103. The research confirmed(证实) that ?.
A. men are unwilling to apologize to others for their mistakes
B. men's chances of getting heart attacks are higher than women's
C. women can benefit more from receiving apologies than men
D. people can also get healthy benefits from giving apologies
C
Our risk of cancer rises as we age. So it makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors(肿瘤)—or doesn't it?
While such careful tracking of cancer is a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it's important to consider the health benefits of screening and the costs of routine testing.
In many cases, screening can lead to additional operations to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not cause serious health problems in patients' remaining years. But the message that everyone must screen for cancer has become so ingrained that when health care experts recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer, it caused a strong reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy(拥护) groups.
It's hard to uproot deeply held beliefs about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history, should continue to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like a remaining life expectancy.
A recent study suggests that doctors start to make more right decisions about who will truly benefit from screening—especially considering the explosion of the elderly.
It's not an easy guess to make, but one that makes sense for the whole patient. Dr. Otis Brawley said, "Many doctors are ordering these tests purely to protect themselves against medical disputes(纠纷). We need to think about the good use of health care and stop talking about the rationing(定量配给制) of health care."
That means making some difficult decisions with elderly patients and going against the misguided belief that when it comes to health care, more is always better.
104. Some researchers now think that routine cancer screening for the elderly ?.
A. adds too much to their medical bills
B. helps contribute to a long life
C. can prevent tumor growth
D. is not always necessary
105. The underlined word "ingrained" in Paragraph 3 most probably means " ?".
A. important B. reliable C. precious D. deep-rooted
106. According to Dr. Otis Brawley, why do many doctors recommend routine screening for cancer?
A. Because they want to get more money from the health care system.
B. Because they want to perform their normal duties actively.
C. Because they want to avoid possible trouble.
D. Because they want their patients to suffer less.
107. What does the author mainly argue for?
A. Screening tests must be effective and dependable.
B. Old people should be careful about routine cancer screening.
C. Screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers earlier.
D. Whether old people should go for cancer screening should follow rules.
D
Post Test Clubs, or PTC's, are a great example of civil society in action. Founded by partnerships between the Ugadan government and non-governmental organizations, like Plan, they work at the community level to battle against AIDS. The only requirement for membership is to be tested for HIV.
With only limited resources donated by organizations like Plan, PTCs have been able to do remarkable things in the battle against HIV/AIDS:
Through music, dance and drama, they perform in community centers, churches and schools to teach people about HIV/AIDS.
They encourage people to be tested, and then teach people how to avoid infection, and if infected, how to avoid spreading the disease.
They support each other—showing love and care, providing material assistance to the most needy widows and orphans among them, working together on projects, and pooling resources to pay for member's funerals.
Their motto is “Living Positively”. Regardless of their disease status(状况), they believe a positive attitude will help them and their loved ones through difficult times.
Margaret is a 43-year-old mother of two and a member of the Agolot Post Test Club in Tororo, Uganda. She reflects, “I had lost hope in life. This worsened after the death of my husband who left me with two children. I was about to die and actually I would be dead by now.”
While laughing shyly, Margaret says, “Since I started taking the drugs and eating the food I am given I have improved steadily.”
She continues, “Through Plan, we received training in music, dance and drama. We are able to perform for our community members. We have also been trained in memory book writing. I have started writing my will and I will complete it soon. All that I have been taught will enable me to live longer and take care of my lovely boys.”

Berlin, Paris, places like that, but never London.
W: Oh, then you have flown before, too.
M: No.
⑩That was during the Second World War and I
went on a large ship carrying soldiers.
W: Well, will you be staying long?
M: I plan to stay for five weeks. I was a teacher but I have
stopped working. My wife is dead and I can stay for a
long time.
W: I hope you have a good trip. I'll go and get your beer. Be
back in a minute.

M: Everyone seems to be
?on a diet. Have you noticed that,
Mary?
W: Everyone seems to be talking about diets.
M: A neighbor of mine is on a banana diet. She eats a banana
for breakfast, a banana for lunch, and two bananas for
dinner.
W:
?That's bad for your health! Has she lost any weight?
M: She doesn't look any thinner, but she hasn't been on the
diet long.
W: A friend of mine eats eggs for breakfast, lunch, and
dinner. He never eats anything but eggs.
M: That's bad for the heart! Eggs have a lot of protein and
protein is good for losing weight. But too many eggs are
bad for the heart.
W: I've read that, too. But eggs are cheaper than steak.
?An
uncle of mine doesn't eat anything but steak.
M:
?The best way to lose weight is to eat less and
exercise more.
(Text 9)
M: Hello, Martha. Did you have a nice holiday?
W: Of course.
M: Where did you go?
W: I went to Fiji.
M: Fiji? Was that nice?
W: Very nice.
M: And how long did you stay there?
W: For two weeks.
M: And you had a good time, eh?
W: Very.
M: What did you do?
W:
?We went swimming, sailing and we played on sand.
M: Great. And what does Fiji look like?
W:
?It has beautiful beaches, palm trees and...
M: And the people. What are the people like?
W: Really friendly.
M: That's great.
?You're very sunburnt.
W: Yes, I know. I've spent a lot of time in the sun.
M: Sunbathing?
W: Yep.
M: Aha.
(Text 10)
W: Hello. I was once a hostess.
?Now I am on my first bus
trip and I'm quite surprised at the services offered during the trip.
?Included are meals on the way, rest rooms
and public-address announcements.
Just now,
?I introduced myself to the hostess on the
bus, and we told each other about experiences on air
and ground travel.
At lunch time, she gave out menus offering a choice of
sandwiches. As she began filling orders, she found that
there weren't enough egg-salad sandwiches. She
quickly went to whisper to the driver. The bus soon
stopped. The hostess ran to another bus that was all the
time following ours, and soon she returned with a box
of egg-salad sandwiches. As she passed my seat,
?she
asked, "Could you do that on a plane?"
