Check out our tsunami(海啸) facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.
● Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
● As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of metres. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.
● Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate(撤离) as possible.
● When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height.
● An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries.
● In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people.
● The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres (131 feet) in some areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.
● The Japanese word "tsunami" literally means "harbour wave".
● Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal(潮水的) waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.
106. How many reasons are mentioned in the passage that may cause tsunamis?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
107. In the Tohoku earthquake, over 15,000 people died mainly because of ?.
A. the earthquake itself
B. the lack of warning systems
C. the tsunami caused by the earthquake
D. the nuclear accidents caused by the tsunami
108. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The word "tsunami" is from British English.
B. The term "tidal wave" is used more often than "tsunami".
C. Some nuclear accidents happened after Indonesia tsunami.
D. More people died in Indonesia tsunami than in Tohoku tsunami.
109. The passage is developed mainly by ?.
A. listing some facts B. giving some examples
C. providing some numbers D. making some conclusions

Earthquake prediction research has been going on for nearly a century but successful earthquake predictions are extremely rare.
In spite of so much research and wonderful equipment, it is impossible to predict an earthquake accurately, although experts can estimate roughly an earthquake coming in a particular region. Approximately 1,000 earthquakes measuring 5.0 and above occur yearly. Earthquakes of the greatest intensity(强度) happen about once a year and major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) occur about 18 times a year. Most earthquakes are not even noticed by the general public, since they happen either under the ocean or in areas where there are no people living. Please read on for some tips about how to stay safe in an earthquake:
● If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under a heavy table or desk. Doorways are among the safest places to stand, thanks to the strong beams overhead. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.
● If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.
● If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down, with your hands protecting your head and neck.
● If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking calms down.
● Be sure to put on shoes immediately, to avoid injury from stepping on broken glass and objects.
● Check yourself and others for injuries.
● Do NOT use your automobile unless there is an emergency.
● If you must leave the area, try to leave word where you can be contacted.
● REMEMBER that there may be aftershocks, which can also cause great damage to your surroundings. Be prepared!

111. Why can't most earthquakes be felt by common people?
A. They happen under the ocean or in places with no one living there.
B. Common people are too busy to pay attention to these earthquakes.
C. Common people know little about what can cause earthquakes.
D. Most earthquakes won't cause great damage to common people.
112. What's the importance of putting on shoes during an earthquake?
A. To run as quickly as you can.

Common sense might tell us that when a volcano starts erupting, the best thing to do is run away. But for a small group of photographers, news of a new erupting volcano somewhere in the world means one thing: It's time to get on a plane.
In early April, Martin Rietze spent three sleepless nights next to a large rock about 500 meters from the mouth of Iceland's recently reawakened Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Why sleepless? Because when a volcano is throwing car-sized pieces of rock into the air, you can't close your eyes for a second. “It's too dangerous to sleep, so you have to stay up,” he says.
There are volcano photographers all over the world, although only perhaps a couple hundred of them. The Internet has allowed them to share their work and tips. “It's a labor of love, because they all know they can't make a living at it”, says Richard Roscoe, a patent examiner from Britain. “Seeing an eruption in progress is frightening,” says Jim Stimac, an engineer from Indonesia. He says he tries to be as cautious as possible.
But even the most experienced can lose their lives. Volcanologists Katia Drafft and her husband Maurice Drafft form France, and Harry Glicken from the US died in an eruption on Mount Unzen in Japan on June 3, 1991, along with 41 journalists.
Professional volcanologists “think we're mad.” Roscoe says. Though not all in the academic field look down on them, Richard Wunderman, who edits the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network, says he often relies on amateurs for reports and photos of eruptions that would otherwise go unrecorded. “They're an amazing resource,” he says, “The hardest part about capturing the power of a volcano in a photo isn't getting close enough, but getting a clear view”, says Arnold Binas, a computer scientist in Sydney. “Clouds, fog and steam often block the view”, he says. “Patience is the key.”
A chemical engineer wears a climbing helmet, a gas mask and gloves. “They're very important because fresh lava can be very sharp, so if you put your hand down, you can get hurt badly,” he says.
114. At the news of a new erupting volcano, some photographers will probably ?.
A. stay sleepless to protect themselves
B. go to the spot and take photos
C. get online to search more information
D. become crazy and ignore their common sense
115. It can be inferred from the text that ?.
A. volcano photographers share their experience through Internet
B. it is common for people to run away when a volcano erupts
C. Katia Drafft and her husband are experienced volcanologists
D. some photographers complain that they cannot earn money from their hobby
116. Arnold Binas believes that capturing the power of a volcano mainly lies in ?.
A. love B. distance C. experience D. patience
117. Who approves of the work of amateur photographers?
A. Richard Wunderman. B. Patrick Koster.
C. Jim Stimac. D. Martin Rietze.
118. The attitude of the writer is ?.
A. approval B. neutral C. disapproval D. praise

This was the year the Earth struck back.
Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, snow storms, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter of a million people in 2010—the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.
"It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves," said Craig Fugate, who heads the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency. It handled a record number of disasters in 2010.
And we have ourselves to blame most of the time, scientists and disaster experts say.
Even though many catastrophes have the ring of random chance, the hand of man made this a particularly deadly, costly, extreme and weird(古怪的) year for everything from wild weather to earthquakes.
Poor construction and development practices conspire to make earthquakes more deadly than they need be. More people live in poverty in vulnerable(脆弱的) buildings in crowded cities. That means that when the ground shakes, the river breaches, or the tropical cyclone hits, more people die.
Disasters from the Earth, such as earthquakes and volcanoes "are pretty much constant," said Andreas Schraft, vice president of catastrophic perils for the Geneva-based insurance giant Swiss Re. "All the change that's made is man-made."
The January earthquake that killed well more than 220,000 people in Haiti is a perfect example. Port-au-Prince has nearly three times as many people—many of them living in poverty—and more poorly built shanties than it did 25 years ago. So had the same quake hit in 1985 instead of 2010, total deaths would have probably been in the 80,000 range, said Richard Olson, director of disaster risk reduction at Florida International University.
In February, an earthquake that was more than 500 times stronger than the one that struck Haiti hit an area of Chile that was less populated, better constructed, and not as poor. Chile's bigger quake caused fewer than 1,000 deaths.
Climate scientists say Earth's climate also is changing, bringing extreme weather, such as heat waves and flooding.
In the summer, one weather system caused oppressive heat in Russia, while farther south it caused flooding in Pakistan that inundated 161,200 square kilometers, about the size of Wisconsin. That single heat-and-storm system killed almost 17,000 people, more people than all the worldwide airplane crashes in the past 15 years.
Scientists have calculated that the killer Russian heat wave—setting a national record of 43.9℃—would happen once every 100,000 years without global warming.
119. What is responsible for the most human deaths in 2010?
A. Natrual disasters. B. Terrorist attacks.
C. Poor buildings. D. Too rapid development.
120. According to Andreas Schraft, ?.
A. earthquakes are happening more often because of human beings
B. earthquakes are causing more damage because of human beings
C. stronger houses should be built to limit storm damage
D. Port-au-Prince is now overpopulated
121. The main point of the article is to ?.
A. list the natural disasters that occurred in 2010
B. give the details of some natural disasters of 2010
C. warn that more natural disasters are to strike
D. blame humanity for not helping those affected by the disasters

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice. 125. ?

of reading, research papers, reports and exams. I feel like I'll
never get through anything.
M: That's terrible. I felt like that last year when I had term
papers to write, but this term seems easy now. I spend a lot
of time in class, but most of it is in the labs. I hated writing
all those term papers. But I can't take you into going to the
show anyway?
W: Oh, now I'm sure I won't go.
(Text 7)
W: Hey, Bobby, how long have you been here?
M: Oh, hi, Judy. I started swimming this morning at six.
W: Goodness! That's early! I got here at six.
M: Do you have any class right after you finish?
W: No, I don't go to class until 10:00. How about you?
M: I'll have a class at 11:00, I usually go out for breakfast after
I swim. Would you like to join me today?
W: See, that sounds like fun. Let me finish and I'll meet you
outside.
M: OK, see you then.
(Text 8)
W: Your boarding pass (登机证), please!
M: Here it is.
W: Thanks.
M: Where is my seat?
W: 15A. Just over there, sir.
M: Thank you, Miss. By the way, where can I put my bag'?
W: You can put your coat and small things on the shelf over
your feet.
M: I've got two bags. I'll afraid I can't put them down there.
Can I put them on the shelf above?
W: All right, sir.
M: And where is the washroom?
W: Behind the curtain.
M: Thank you again.
W: You're welcome.
(Text 9)
W: What changes do you think will take place in the next 50
years?
M: I imagine that the greatest change will be the difference
between humans and machines.
W: What do you mean?
M: I mean it will be harder to tell the difference between the
human and the machine.
W: Can you describe it more clearly?
M: As science develops, it will be possible for all parts of one's
body to be replaced. A computer will work like the human
brain. The computer can recognize one's feelings, and act in
a feeling way.
W: You mean man-made human beings will be produced?
Come on! That's out of the question!
M: Don't get excited, please. That's only my personal
imagination!
W: Go on, please. I won't take it seriously.
M: We will then be able to create a machine that is a copy of
ourselves. We'll appear to be alive long after we are dead.
W: What a ridiculous idea!
M: It's possible that a way will be found to put our spirit into a
new body. Then, we can choose to live as long as we want.
W: In that case, the world would be a hopeless mess!
(Text 10)
Earthquakes are something that most people fear. There
are some places that have few or no earthquakes. Most places
in the world, however, have them regularly. Countries that
have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous.
The strongest earthquake that ever happened in North
America was in 1964. It happened in Alaska. In 1755, one of
the strongest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal.
Around 20,000 people died. In 1923 a very powerful
earthquake hit Tokyo. 140,000 people died. The worst
earthquake ever reported was in China. 830,000 people were
killed in this quake in 1556.
Earthquakes are not the only acts of nature which people
fear. There are typhoons, floods and so on. But they probably
don't worry people as much as earthquakes do. The reason is
that we often know when and how they are coming, so far,
however, no sure way is known to predict an earthquake.
When one comes, it is a surprise. People cannot prepare for it.
So thousands of people still die in earthquakes nowadays such
as the one in China in 1976.
