A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection.
When the Iraq War broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier.
About a month later, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood there with a large package in his hands. "Sir, I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He often talked about you, and your love for art."
The young man held out his package and opened it. There was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. The father was so amazed to the eyes that his own eyes glistened(闪烁) with tears.
The father hung the portrait over his hall. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait before he showed them the other great works he had collected.
A few months later the man died. There was to be a great auction(拍卖) of his paintings.
"We will start the bidding(出价) with this portrait of the son. Who will bid for it " There was silence for a long time. But still the auctioneer continued, "The son! Who'll take the son "
Finally, a voice came from the back of the room. It was a gardener of the wealthy man. "I'll give $10 for the painting." Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. "$10 is the bid, won't someone bid $20 " The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the painting of the son. They wanted the other worthy collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel(小木槌) "Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!"
A man sitting on the second row shouted. "Now let's get on with the collection!"
The auctioneer laid down his gavel. "I'm sorry, the auction is over. I was told of a secret stipulation(条款) in the will. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!"

Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for. We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.
The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around.
But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them. Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modern road design.
In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer(层) of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller atones. A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same time, metal hubs (the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads(泊油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.
94. What might explain why transport wheels didn't become popular for some time

D. The existence of transport wheels was not known.
95. What do we know about road design from the passage

In England three foreign gentlemen studied the information on the post sign at a bus stop. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted rude words about the foreigners. The bus conductor came to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.
A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. Also in India, you might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and consider that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India shaking one's head means expressing agreement. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express "yes"—a nod means "no".
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence(冒犯). It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult.
Attitudes to women vary a lot around the world. In Japan, for example, men usually plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.
Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are traveling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality(礼节).

The ancient city of Chichen Itza in southern Mexico was one of the most powerful cities and one of the most powerful ancient cultures—the Maya. But today, no one lives there. It is only a group of old buildings. However, people from around the world still come to see it. People come to learn about its ancient culture, the culture of the Mayan people.
The Mayan culture began almost 3,000 years ago and grew in parts of Central America. But about 1,000 years ago a group called the Itza invaded the city and built new parts of the city. based on natural wells. They named the city Chichen Itza, which means "mouth of the well of the Itza".
The most interesting structure in Chichen Itza is the Pyramid of Kukulcan (库库尔坎金字塔), whose four sides all come together at one point at the top. Each side on the Pyramid of Kukulcan has 91 steps. And there is one more step at the top of the pyramid. The steps are as many as the days of a year. Some experts believe the Maya could have used this building to help them know when to plant crops. Each day the sun falls on a different step of the pyramid, which could be a way to follow the year.
The people of Chichen Itza especially designed one building to observe and study the movement of the stars and planets. Experts say that the observatory(天文台) is one of the most complex structures the Maya built. A set of steps went up and around the observatory tower. And there were windows in the tower. Each window had a purpose. Experts believe that a person looking through one of these windows could see particular stars on particular dates.
