Choosing a nice mountain bike for you is easier than learning how to ride it. Keep these tips in mind:
Decide how you are going to use your new mountain bike.
Are you a new rider who simply wants to travel outdoors on the weekend, weather permitting Do you intend to test yourself on the rough roads, every day, rain or shine Or are you going to use your new mountain bike to ride to and from school or work Be honest about your intentions, and you're more than half way toward choosing the right mountain bike for you.
Visit your local bike shops.
Any good bike shop will stock a wide range of quality mountain bikes in all price points and sizes. Your local bike shops will carry more than one brand of bicycle. Not only will they sell you a mountain bike that suits your needs, but they will service what they sell. Visit at least a few shops. You'll get one that satisfies you right away.
Don't be bashful.
Tell your salesperson how you intend to use your new mountain bike, and how much you are willing to spend. Your salesperson will show you a selection of models and brands accordingly. He or she will also help you determine the right size for you.You may ask more without any sense of shyness.
Take a test ride.
All good bike shops let customers take test rides. There's a good reason for this beyond “try before you buy” salesmanship. Since you already know your price range and find the right size, you now have to find out which brand you ride best. They want you to be happy with your purchase. After only a few test rides from more than one bike shop, the right mountain bike will choose you.

London Underground
The world's first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.

C
Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn't it But it's not an unrealistic dream, with the development of China's high-speed railway system. And that's not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan—to connect up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. If China's plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beiling in under two days.
The new system would still follow China's high-speed railway standard. And the bullet train connecting Shanghai to Hangzhou, already reaching the World's fastest average speed, was able to go 350 kilometers an hour. Almost as fast as some airplanes, it covers 202 kilometers in about 40 minutes.
Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(测量), maintenance(维修) of railway tracks. So, it's important to pay attention to every detail.
But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion. China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development.
It'll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China's far west. We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they'll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.
103. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is .
A. technical issues B. safety of the system
C. problems relating to money D. maintenance of railway tracks
104. Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's high-speed railway plan
A. Critical. B. Reserved. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
105. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage
A. New Railway Standards B. Big Railway Dreams of China
C. High-speed Bullet Trains D. International Railway Network
D
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter altogether.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and is so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic steam without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.
Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive. Let alone master the roadman ship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to hear.
106. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by .
A. traffic jams B. great speed of modern life
C. the behavior of the drivers D. terrible road conditions
107. According to the writer, a good driver should .
A. beat back when forced to face rude driving
B. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
C. encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever they want to
D. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
108. What is the best title of the passage
A. Road Politeness B. Traffic Problems
C. Bad Manners on the Road D. Good Drivers and Bad Drivers

Text 9 M:Hi,Jane.Welcome back. How was the West Coast W:Terrific.I had a wonderful time.It was really nice to get away from the city for a while. M:What did you think of Los Angeles W:It was all right.I liked it better than I thought I would. It's very clean and large. And it's got a lot of trees. The problem is transport. The bus service is terrible. And of course, they don't have any subway,so it's a little difficult to get around. We had to rent a car. M:And was the weather good W:Oh,yes. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco. M:Cool in San Francisco That's surprising. W:Yeah,it surprised me a bit, too. We didn't take any sweaters or anything, and they say it's always like that in August.Anyway,I loved it.It's probably the most beautiful city in the US-all those hills, the bay,and those charming old Victorian houses. M:So,you like it better than Los Angeles W:Oh,yes. There's much more to see and do.And because it's smaller than Los Angeles,it's a bit easier to get around. There are lots of buses and street cars. Text 10 April 7th marks United Nations Health Day.Today children in developing countries are taking more and more responsibilities for the health of their brothers and sisters and other children in the community."Child to Child",a group based in London, has spent ten years promoting the idea of "children helping other children to learn about good health". The "Child to Child" activities are fun and children enjoy taking part in them.In addition, children can do a great deal at home, too. For example, they can help to improve personal health simply by ensuring that the younger children are kept clean. They also learn how to deal with accidents, such as treating bums or cuts. "Child to Child" have already sent out thousands of sets of their resource materials worldwide and are building up a resource center so that they can share information with the other groups working in the same area or country.
