  A sixty year old American, Mr Linden, wears many hats: a writer, a businessman, a traveller, an educator and the founder of a famous hotel. He has lived in a village in Yunnan Province for nearly 20 years. He now considers that he is one of the “cool new Dali people”.

一、宾语从句
1.宾语从句的类型
宾语从句根据引导词的不同可分为三种类型:
(1)由that引导的宾语从句。如:
We knew (that) we should learn from each other.
(2)由if/whether引导的宾语从句。如:
Please tell me if/whether you have been to America.
(3)由who、where、how等连接代词或连接副词引导的宾语从句。如:
Can you tell me how I can get to the nearest post office
2. 宾语从句的引导词
(1)如果从句是陈述句,引导词用that(that在口语或非正式文体中常省略);
(2)如果从句是一般疑问句,引导词用if/whether;
(3)如果从句是特殊疑问句,引导词用由疑问词转换而来的疑问代词/副词。
3.宾语从句的语序
(1)陈述句变为宾语从句,语序不变,即仍用陈述语序。如:
He is an honest boy. The teacher said. →The teacher said (that) he was an honest boy.
(2)一般疑问句和特殊疑问句变为宾语从句,语序变为陈述语序。如:
Does he work hard I wonder. →I wonder if/whether he works hard.
When did he leave I don’t know. →I don’t know when he left.
(1)如果主句是现在的时态,从句的时态可根据实际情况而定。如:
I have heard (that)he will come back next week.
(2)如果主句是过去的某种时态,那么从句的时态一定要用过去的某种时态。如:
He said (that) there were no classes yesterday.
注意: 如果宾语从句表述的是客观真理、自然现象等时,不管主句是什么时态,从句都要用一般现在时。如:
He said that light travels much faster than sound.

二、定语从句
1. 定语从句: 定语从句是由关系代词或关系副词引导的从句,其作用是作定语修饰主句的某个名词性成分,相当于形容词,所以又称为形容词性从句,一般紧跟在它所修饰的先行词后面。
2. 关系词: 引导定语从句的关联词称为关系词,关系词有关系代词和关系副词。
关系代词有 that、which、who、whom、whose、as等;关系副词有 where、when、why等。
关系代词所代替的先行词是人或物的名词或代词,并在句中充当主语、宾语、定语等成分。关系代词在定语从句中作主语时,从句谓语动词的人称和数要和先行词保持一致。
(1)who、whom、that这些词代替的先行词是人的名词或代词,在从句中所起作用如下:
Is he the man who/that wants to see you 他就是想见你的那个人吗 (who/that在从句中作主语)
He is the man whom/that I saw yesterday. 他就是我昨天见的那个人。 (whom/that在从句中作宾语)
3.先行词: 被定语从句修饰的名词、代词称为先行词。
They rushed over to help the man whose car had broken down. 那人车坏了,大家都跑过去帮忙。
Please pass me the book whose cover is green. 请递给我那本绿皮的书。
(2)whose 用来指人或物(只用作定语)。如:
②The package (which/that) you are carrying is about to come unwrapped.
你拿的包裹快散了。(which/that在句中作宾语)
(3)which、that 所代替的先行词是事物的名词或代词,在从句中可作主语、宾语等。如:
①A prosperity which/that had never been seen before appears in the countryside.

  “A long distance never separates close friends.” It’s easier to make new friends than to say goodbye to old ones.
When I was still studying in China, my school held a singing competition. I entered it because I really loved singing. I sang with a girl named Jenny. She’s one of my best friends.
