While kids are enjoying some time off from school this summer, it is also important to keep their minds active. Parents can help their kids avoid the terrible “summer slide”, where students lose some of their academic gains from the school year, by encouraging their children to participate in TurfMutt’s environmental education and stewardship (管理) program.
About the Lessons
The TurfMutt youth education lesson plans are free and suitable for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) standards for kids in grades K-8. The lessons are available on the TurfMutt website and in the USGBC Learning Lab. They are designed as a fun and engaging way for students to learn valuable science lessons in their own backyards, parks or school yards.
The lessons focus on getting kids outside to conduct interactive experiments and other fun activities. The lesson plans help kids learn how to care for the green space around us so they can learn early on how to take care of the environment and why that is so important.
The arts are included in the lessons as well. One of the plans provides an original drama script, where students can act out parts for flowers, sun trees and environmental villains (反面人物), such as Carbon Creep. By putting on the play as a class activity or for others, students can learn how green plants, trees and bushes help our communities.
The TurfMutt lesson plans are free on the TurfMutt website and are available through subscription from the USGBC Learning Lab. Prior TurfMutt lesson plans are also housed on the TurfMutt website.

Tait’s journey to being a baking kid began back in2018 when, aged 14, she was struck down by mental illness. With medication and therapy(疗法), and under the guidance of parents, Tait began exploring activities that might help her find a path through the daily anxiety attacks and depression. Gardening, drawing, knitting were among the things she tried. But nothing quite seemed to last long enough or give her a sense of hope or delight.
A turning point came when his father Alex clipped a simple bread recipe from a magazine. When he read it, Tait felt excited and got stuck in. The effect was nothing short of magic.
“Baking filled my time and put me in a really calm state, but it also gave me a huge sense of purpose when all I really felt like was a burden,” she says.
Tait’s newfound zeal rapidly capped her family’s appetite for bread, so she began gifting her bread to lucky locals in her home town. Word quickly spread and the free bread turned into a paid-for subscription service. Alex quit his job as a tutor to become his daughter’s business partner, and after opening several successful pop-up stores(快闪店), the pair drew on their global social media following to crowd fund a brick-and-mortar store in 2019.
It was an instant success, selling out daily and she wrote a book. However, ensuring long-term viability(生存能力) would have meant scaling up in a way that neither father nor daughter liked. So instead, after four years of 5 am starts and 12- hour days, they shut up shop last summer.
Tait has since scaled back to basics, selling her bakes at twice-weekly pop-up store. She runs the Orange Bakery from a Watlington’s abandoned factory, which is also the center for Breaducating Britain. So far they have distributed around 40,000 free bread kits through more than 200 different organisations to schools, prisons and individuals.
4. Why did Tait try painting at first
A. To develop her interest. B. To explore her potentials.
C. To deal with her mental problems. D. To achieve her childhood dream.
5. What does the underlined word “zeal” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Fact. B. Passion. C. Aim. D. Element.
6. What happened to Tait after four years of hard work
A. She closed up her shop. B. She expanded her store.
C. She invested in many organisations. D. She opened several pop-up shops.
7. Which of the following can best describe Tait
A. Modest and sociable. B. Charitable and honest.
C. Talented and hard-working. D. Generous and helpful.

The artificial turf (草皮) industry has had a great deal of success convincing millions of people that its short-lived, non-recyclable product is somehow good for the environment. Were there a greenwashing hall of fame, this would be in it. In fact, it’s clear that artificial turf is bad for our ecosystems as well as our health.
Artificial turf worsens the effects of climate change. On a 90-degree Los Angeles day, the temperature of artificial turf can be hot enough to burn skin. And artificial turf is laid improperly and disproportionately (不成比例地) to replace private and public turf in many economically disadvantaged communities that already face the greatest effects of the urban heat-island effect, in which hard surfaces raise local temperatures.
Besides, because artificial turf is a complex product made of multiple types of plastic, it will never be recycled. After its relatively short lifespan of about 8 to 15 years, artificial turf ends up in landfills, creating a whole host of additional pollution problems.
Studies show the maintenance costs of artificial turf are often more than those of natural grass. When the field is a plastic carpet, those systems can’t work, necessitating regular cleaning with a substantial amount of water.
Remarkably, artificial turf doesn’t even save water compared with grass. Industry marketing materials claim that an artificial field can save millions of gallons of water a year and that homeowners who use the product to replace a conventional lawn can reduce their water use by more than half. But artificial turf must be regularly cleaned with water, and in warm climates, artificial fields get so hot that schools must water them down before children play on them.
Industry water reduction promises generally compare artificial turf with the thirstiest grasses. But far more drought-tolerant varieties of natural turf grass are available. Residential lawns are indeed a tremendously wasteful use of water, but native plants are a far better solution than artificial turf — and you get butterflies as a bonus.
8. How does the author sound in paragraph 1
A. Embarrassed. B. Critical. C. Regretful. D. Disappointed.
9. Which is a fact of the artificial turf
A. It is used by many poor communities. B. It can only be recycled within 15 years.
C. It is a main reason for hard ground surface. D. It greatly worsens the global climate change.
10. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 5
A. The amount of water wasted by artificial turf.
B. The misleading information about the artificial turf.
C. The temperature of the artificial turf in hot weather.
D. The measures to deal with the artificial turf in schools.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To illustrate the need for better turf.
B. To call for the improvement of plastic turf.
C. To analyse the disadvantages of artificial turf.
D. To compare the natural turf with the artificial turf.

When you’re feeling down and don’t have time for your typical pick-me-ups, you may follow the classic advice to fake a smile to trick yourself into happiness. But can forcing a smile actually cheer you up
Nicholas Coles, a research scientist at Stanford University, gathered an international team of researchers with differing viewpoints on the subject to see whether this view is true or not. They designed a study to look at more than 3,800 participants from 19 countries.
For the study, the researchers had participants pose a smile in three ways: by looking at a photo of a smiling person and copying their expression, by following muscle-by-muscle instructions on how to smile, or by holding a pen in their mouth. Some looked at positive images, like lovely dogs, while grinning (咧嘴笑), and some did not.
With the first two methods, happiness increased regardless of whether participants were looking at a positive picture, but the results were unclear with the pen-in-mouth method. Overall, however, the study made it clear that faking a grin makes people report being happier.
The idea that facial expressions can influence emotions is known as the facial feedback hypothesis (反馈假说). This isn’t true only with smiling; scowling (皱眉), for example, can make people feel angrier, as Coles’ analysis found. Other bodily experiences could also cause similar relevant feedback.
But exactly how this plays, out in the brain is unclear. Some experts think posing an expression like a smile causes a specific happiness-related pathway that creates a full-blown bodily response and the brain interprets this response as happiness. Others suggest that the brain simply interprets the smile as a clue that you’re happy.
Though no one doubts the results of the experiment, unfortunately, experts aren’t sure whether the results carry over from the lab to the real world, because in real life, there are a lot more inputs to your brain than there are in the lab. “But it wouldn’t hurt to smile a few times over the course of the day to see if it affects your mood, ”said Coles.
12. What were the participants asked to do in the study
A. Display various smiles.
B. Smile at different photos.
C. Distinguish different smiles.
D. Experience the power of smiles.
13. Which might be an example of the facial feedback hypothesis
A Blowing the nose upsets others. B. Weeping brings more sadness.
C. Writing refreshes personal memories. D. Patting the back gives others confidence.
14. What is the experts’ attitude toward the result of the study
A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
15. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Is Smiling Really So Powerful
B How Can a Smile Affect Your Emotions
C. What Should You Do When in Low Spirits
D. Can Forcing a Smile Make You Feel Happier

Whether it’s woodworking, sewing or sculpting teeny cupcakes, making art is good for your mind and body. ___16___ And developing our creative side can give us a stronger sense of agency — the ability to solve problems by imagining possible solutions.
But you don’t have to be a full-time artist to get in on those health benefits. All you need to do is just make art. And the more you do it, the better. ___17___
You don’t need to be an artist with a capital “A”.
We tend to think that only people who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists, but really, anyone can be an artist. ___18___ In fact, research has shown that there are no differences in health outcomes between those who identify as experienced artists and those who don’t. That means that no matter your skill level, you’ll be able to feel all the good things that come with making art.
Figure out your mode of creative expression.
Start with whatever you enjoy. But keep an open mind. ___19___ You can do that through many activities: finger painting, cooking, baking, oil painting, weaving — the sky’s the limit. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up — do whatever you’re in the mood for.
___20___
Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Mess around! Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. Because it’s the physical act of making art that induces those feelings of stress relief and positive energy — not what you make or how you make it.
A. Be ready to take others’ advice.
B. Take control of the waves of emotion.
C. Everyone is capable of creative expression.
D. Focus on the making and let go of expectations.
E. Anything that engages your creative mind is good for you.

G. Here are several things you need to know to kick-start your creative art habit.

Maurice Richard was a great hockey (曲棍球) player. He was a hero in our heart. We all wore the same uniform as he, the red, white, and blue uniform of the Montreal Canadiens, the best hockey team in the world. We all combed our hair in the same style as Maurice Richard. We taped our sticks like Maurice Richard. We cut all his pictures out of the papers, Truly, we knew everything about him.
On the ice, when the referee blew his whistle, the two teams would rush at the puck (冰球). We were five Maurice Richards taking it away from five other Maurice Richards; we were ten players, all of us wearing the uniform of the Montreal Canadiens. On our backs, we all wore the famous number 9. Though we would mix up each other, no one liked to wear the Toronto sweater — a blue and white sweater with a maple leaf on the front because the Toronto team was often defeated by the Montreal Canadiens. However, it was just a Toronto sweater that made me realize a truth: it isn’t what’s on your back that counts, it’s what you’ve got inside your head.
One day, my Montreal Canadiens sweater had become too small; then it got torn and had holes in it. With a formal match approaching, I asked my mother if she would buy a Montreal Canadiens sweater for me. She agreed. Then she did what she did whenever we needed new clothes. She started to leaf through the catalogue the Eaton company sent us in the mail. The Eaton was a company producing sports clothes. She took out her writing paper and wrote in her gentle schoolteacher’s hand: “Cher Monsieur Eaton, would you be kind enough to send me a Canadiens’ sweater for my son who is ten years old I’m sending you three dollars and please send me what’s left if there’s anything left.”
Monsieur Eaton was quick to answer my mother’s letter. Two weeks. later we received the sweater.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
But that day I had one of the greatest disappointments of my life — a Toronto sweater!

I also make it a point to review and summarize what I’ve learned every day. Additionally, I don’t hesitate to ask questions or discuss with classmates and teachers.
To form good study habits, we should set clear goals and establish a regular study schedule and stick to it. Moreover, consistency and self- discipline are the keys to nurturing and maintaining these habits.

But that day I had one of the greatest disappointments of my life — a Toronto sweater! I would even say that on that day I experienced a very great sorrow. Instead of the red, white, and blue Montreal Canadiens sweater, Monsieur Eaton had sent us a Toronto sweater. I’d always worn the red, white, and blue Montreal Canadiens sweater. All my friends wore the red, white, and blue sweater: never had anyone in my village ever worn the Toronto sweater. With tears in my eyes, I found the strength to say, “I’ll never wear that uniform.”
“If you rush to conclusions before you try, my boy, you won’t go far in this life,” said my mother. “Maurice Richard would never put it on his back,” I cried. “You aren’t Maurice Richard. Anyway, it isn’t what’s on your back that counts, it’s what you’ve got inside your head. Besides, we have no time to change another one because your match is coming.” Hearing that, I had to accept the truth. Embarrassingly, I became the only player wearing a Toronto sweater. However, our team didn’t lose. Instead, we won. From then on, I kept that in mind — “It isn’t what’s on your back that counts, it’s what you’ve got inside your head.”
