When she was a child, Yue- Sai Kan was told by her father that she should always aim to be the first to walk on the moon because no one remembers the second. What her father said has been a driving inspiration over the years for her to become an Emmy — winning television producer, bestselling author and successful entrepreneur.
Her new book Bea Pioneer, which is the tenth she has penned and her first Chinese- language autobiography (自传), came out after three years in the making. It was also inspired in part by her father’s words.
“Actually many people have asked me to write an autobiography. I have been asked so many times already but I always felt that it was not the right time for me to sit down and give thanks for my life and also I did not think my life was so exciting anyway,” says Kan.
However, her publisher thought otherwise, telling her that since she lived through interesting times in China, and was both witness and participant (见证者与参与者), she should write the book as a historical record.
“All the things I have done—my successes and my failures — can be a good example to young people in particular. I think that’ s the main reason why I wrote the book,” says Kan, adding that the COVID-19 lockdown gave her the unexpected opportunity to do some thinking about her life.
In the book, Kan included a lot of pictures taken from her early life. By scanning a QR code (扫二维码), readers are also able to see video clips from the period. “I am a television person, so I thought these videos were a great way to connect with my readers,” she says.
When writing an autobiography, the biggest challenges are not only how to present one’s life, but also remembering it in the first place. To help with reorganising her story, Kan asked the many friends and workmates she made over the years to write down their memories of her from earlier times. So besides featuring Kan’s own words, the new books are also filled with those of her friends, which gave Kan a new understanding of herself.
4. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A. Kan once walked on the moon. B. Kan’s father’s words deeply influenced her.
C. Kan’s father was a great author. D. Kan’s autobiography was written in English.
5. What mainly drove Kan to write her autobiography
A. To give thanks for her life. B. To be in honor of her father.
C. To share China stories well. D. To set the youth an example.
6. What challenged Kan most while writing her autobiography
A. How to gain a new understanding. B. How to collect memories from others.
C. How to connect with her readers. D. How to remember and present her life.
7. Which of the following can best describe Kan
A. Generous and optimistic. B. Helpful and patient.
C. Modest and inspirational. D. Kind and humorous.

You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
8. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for
A. Beautifying the city he lives in. B. Introducing eco-friendly products.
C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste. D. Reducing garbage on the beach.
9. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3
A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B. To explain why they are useful.
C. To voice his views on modern art.
D. To find a substitute for them.
10. What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers
A. Calming. B. Disturbing.
C. Refreshing. D. Challenging.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Artists’ Opinions on Plastic Safety
B. Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C. Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D. Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures
D
The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups.Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
12. What does the author say about silence in conversations
A. It implies anger.
B. It promotes friendship.
C. It is culture-specific.
D. It is content-based.
13. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought
A. The Chinese.
B. The French.
C. The Mexicans.
D. The Russians.
14. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence
A. Let it continue as the patient pleases.
B. Break it while treating patients.
C. Evaluate its harm to patients.
D. Make use of its healing effects.
15. What may be the best title for the text
A. Sound and Silence
B. What It Means to Be Silent
C. Silence to Native Americans
D. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold

Adaptations are currently popular in the movie industry. We’re all familiar with film adaptations of books. But what about book adaptations of films Book adaptations of films aren’t that common, but it’s a medium ___36___certainly takes skills to master.
The most well-known version of ___37___film being adapted to books is via the novelization (小说化). Movie novelizations went through a boom period before the internet era. Fans ___38___ (want) to know more about the fictional worlds and experience the story again in a new way. But they couldn’t simply google it, or ___39___ (immediate) purchase the production on tape. Thus, the novelization was a great solution.
Meanwhile, the screen to page process has also opened up the ___40___ (possible) of sequels (续篇). Perhaps there simply wasn’t financial investment to create a follow-up to a film. Maybe a sequel idea simply felt more appropriate for a novel. Regardless, some terrific films have been expanded upon thanks ___41___this medium. In recent years, for example, the film Heat, ___42___ (release) in 1995 has received its own novel. ET: The Book of the Green Planet continued the extra-terrestrial’s journey after the completion of the film’s narrative.
But what are the benefits of reading a novel instead of waiting for the big screen version Well, a novel can take ___43___ (it) reader deeper into the mind of the characters that the film had to represent in a more visual way. Besides, descriptions can be more detailed too. Although a film might characterize a fantastic scene or a specific costume choice, it doesn’t always tell why those things are important. Novelizations and sequels can take that extra step and shine a light on some of those movie-making ___44___ (choice).
Book adaptations of films obviously won’t ever replace cinema, and there’s no need ___45___ (choose) one or the other. Actually, these two mediums are considerably interdependent and complementary.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the tail end of the depression (大萧条), and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own. My father had drowned (淹死) in Pitt Lake five years earlier. Because Dad had no pension (养老金,抚恤金) or benefits, there was not much money; we went on social assistance.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. This was bread deep-fried in lard (猪油). Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a mirth, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be to iced out after Christmas.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. An unspector came to our house and searched it thoroughly so be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling (铲) snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots — boots with no cardboard in the soles. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, and cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. But on the way to the bus stop I noticed a big grocery store. It was then that I realized we had no Christmas decorations and no Christmas goodies. I also knew we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I slowed my pace, feeling a sense of guilt.

I slowed my pace, feeling a sense of guilt. How could I be so selfish when my family was in such a difficult situation Mum was probably at home in tears, considering ways to celebrate Christmas. Thinking of this, the idea of buying the beautiful boots I had wanted for so long didn’t seem as appealing as before. As I reached the bus stop, the bus to town arrived soon. I stood there for what seemed like a century, until finally the driver asked, “Son, are you getting on the bus or not ” I finally burst out without hesitation, “No, thanks.”
The bus drove off without me, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I went back to the grocery store. I spent every coin of my hard-earned money buying a turkey, ham and all the Christmas decorations. When I got home, Mum opened the door and saw me returning with a full load. Words seemed to fail to convey her emotions so that she embraced me tightly. That night, my family had a very good Christmas time. I received the most precious Christmas gift — my responsibility for my family.
