The winter solstice(冬至) of 2024 is on December 21. That is the shortest day and longest night of the year for people living in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球). It also means that the following days will begin to have more sunlight, which is a great reason to celebrate. 1

The winter solstice is a good day to watch the sunrise or sunset, since you don’t have to get up too early or stay up late. 3 If you are on a hill or at the beach from where you can see far away, you can enjoy the best sights. Instead. if you are in a neighborhood with lots of tall buildings, you may see nothing.
Candles are used as a symbol of brighter days to come in many traditional solstice celebrations. 4 Turn off the lights in your house, sit around the table with your family, and enjoy a big dinner together.

B.B.Ask an adult to bring out some candles and light them with you.
C.Some people make wishes during the winter solstice.

The toothbrush is a common thing that most people use every day. 11 Believe it or not, the toothbrush has a very long and interesting history.
12 People chewed (咀嚼) on the small twigs (嫩枝) to clean their teeth. It might seem old- fashioned, but it worked well.
The first “modern” toothbrushes were made in China around 1498. These toothbrushes were made of pig hair and were much more comfortable to use than the twigs. In 1780, William Addis of England came up with the idea of making small holes in a bone and putting bristles (粗纤维) into the holes. 13 This design worked much better than the twigs and pig hair brushes and quickly became very popular.
In 1845, the first toothbrush that was produced in large numbers was created by H. N. Wadsworth. His toothbrush was made of bone and bristles and was very similar to William Addis’ design. 14 Nylon was much better at cleaning teeth than natural bristles and quickly became the standard.
Today, toothbrushes come in all shapes and sizes. And they are made from all kinds of materials. 15

Animals can do many things that humans can’t do, like flying or staying underwater for a long time. 22 Thanks to it, people can travel far in the air. This has helped to develop trade and travelling. The idea of the submarine (潜水艇) comes from a sea animal. It can travel underwater. 23
Plants around us are also great sources of ideas for other wonderful inventions. The self-cleaning glass window and the cloth used to make umbrellas were both inspired by the leaves of a lotus plant, with their ability to wash away dirty things in the rain. 24 Georges de Mestral was a Swiss engineer who, while walking his dog in the forest in, noticed that his coat was covered in burrs (苍耳). Through a microscope, he discovered that burrs were able to attach themselves to clothing and other surfaces. This observation sparked his inspiration, finally leading to the invention of Velcro. It has become a fastener (扣件) for shoes, jackets and even spacesuits.
25 Scientists and inventors have tried to learn more about things in nature to create better, stronger and safer tools for our everyday life.

In Amsterdam, housing is very expensive, especially for students. 67 However, finding this type of apartment was almost impossible until recently. While the colleges in Amsterdam were trying to solve the housing problem, thousands of shipping containers (集装箱) were lying quietly in ports around the world. These huge steel containers carried products from one country to another. The life of each container is about 10 years. 68 But they can’t recycle all of them because there are so many.
Back in Amsterdam, a company (公司) came up with an amazing idea. Why not reuse these shipping containers as student apartments 69 They are all the same size and fit together perfectly. The steel is strong. Moreover, these containers are quite cheap to buy. For all these reasons, they can be used to build apartments quickly and cheaply. Building began in 2005, and after only a few weeks, hundreds of Amsterdam students had new homes.
When students first heard about this idea, they thought the container apartments would be small, noisy, and cold. 70 What’s more, each container apartment has a kitchen, a bedroom with a study area, and a bathroom. Living in a shipping container has become popular. Today, over 3,000 Amsterdam students live in the container village.
