Ben could hear strong winds outside his home in Alabama. Black clouds were making the sky very dark. With no light outside, it felt like midnight. The news on TV reported that a heavy rainstorm was in the area.

2.rise
rise是动词,意为“增加;提高;增强”,rise是不及物动词,不能用于被动结构,常与above,from,to等介词连用。rise 偶尔也用作系动词,后接形容词作表语,其过去式为rose。

辨析:rise与raise
(1)rise:意为“增加;提高;上升;升起”,作不及物动词,后面不接宾语,主语通常为物。

(2)raise:意为“使升起来;提高;举起”,作及物动词,后接宾语,主语通常为人。

(1)“With no light outside”是“with+宾语+宾语补足语”结构,作宾语补足语的可以是形容词、副词或介词(短语)等,相当于“Because there was no light outside”。介词with在此句中表示一种伴随的状态,同时还包含着某种因果关系,因此在此处可意为“由于;因为”。

(2)light为不可数名词,意为“光;光线;光亮”。

考点 rise的用法
作动词,意为“(日、月、星等)升起;增加;提高”,其过去式为rose,过去分词为risen。
【注意】rise不能用于被动语态。
【辨析】rise与raise
(1)rise是不及物动词,后面要带上介词后才能加宾语。
如:Smoke was rising from the chimney.烟从烟囱里升起。
(2)raise是及物动词,意为“举起”,后面可直接跟宾语;此外,raise还有“饲养;供养;筹集”等意思。
