Different countries have different customs and cultures. Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words.
In China, people are used to saying “sorry” to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it’s very proud for American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word “sorry”—even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying “Sorry to trouble you.” If they’re five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying “Sorry, I’m late!” It’s quite different in China. They use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions (定义) of “sorry” are: 1) feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck; 2) feeling regret because you’ve done something wrong.
So what does “sorry” really mean And why do western people use it so much Well, in western culture, saying “sorry” is a way to be polite. It’s also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you’d better say “sorry” to them about something. Or it’s hard for you to get what you want. So maybe saying “sorry” is not only just being polite, but also a good method to get what you want!

Jane Austen (1775—1817), an English novelist, started writing young and finished six novels in her life. Today Austen’s books are more popular than ever. In the last 10 years, five of her six novels have been made into Hollywood films, while her books continue to be best-sellers.
Richard Jenkyns, a professor of English at Oxford University, says that her novels are about marriage (婚姻), friendships and the family, which are still with us today. “The stories are timeless(永恒的),” Jenkyns said.
Pride and Prejudice (《傲慢与偏见》) is Austen’s most famous work. It is a love story about Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. At first, these two dislike each other. Elizabeth is pretty, smart and lively. Mr. Darcy is handsome, rich and has a better family background. So he is proud. At the same time, Darcy holds a prejudice against the Bennet family. He has no understanding of why the family, especially its mother and daughters should try so hard to find wealthy and powerful(有钱有势的) husbands. He thinks they are vulgar. Anyway, Elizabeth and Darcy finally fall in love and become a romantic(浪漫的) couple but their families don’t want them to.
In Pride and Prejudice, some of the main things that Jane Austen wants to teach people are as follows. Opposites can attract(吸引)each other. Lovers should not only make each other feel relaxed or, comfortable, but also educate and improve each other.
Austen is often called the greatest romantic writer, so it is surprising she remained unmarried. “Maybe she was too romantic, waiting for the perfect man,” Jenkyns says.

Food safety is very important. Our fridge helps keep food fresh, but not all foods stay fresh in the same way. 36
Fridge shelves can have different temperatures. The higher the shelf, the warmer it is. Use this to your advantage: Put ready-to-eat foods like burgers, pizza, and cream cakes on the top shelves. 37 Bottom shelves are the coldest, so they’re best for meat and seafood.
38 Bacteria grow quickly in temperatures between 5℃ and 60℃, called the “Temperature Danger Zone.” For the best food safety, keep your fridge at 0℃ to 5℃, and your freezer at -18℃ or below.
Fruits and vegetables don’t always need the fridge. They can stay at room temperature if it’s cool, dry, and not sunny. 39
Let’s all be careful with food safety. 40 Use older items first to keep them fresh. Check food packages for storage instructions. Don’t fill the fridge too much—this keeps everything cool and fresh.
A.Check the fridge often and put food in order. B.But once you cut them, put them in the fridge. C.Here’s how to store food properly in your fridge. D.Middle shelves are good for dairy like cheese, butter, and yogurt. E.Remember, fridges don’t kill bacteria, but they do slow their growth.

A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally, and a bad memory as something that cannot be changed. People can make their memories better by some skills.
Take an interest. We all remember the things we are interested in and forget the ones that are boring. This explains the reason why students can remember football results but have no idea with dates of their history lessons! Take an active interest in what you want to remember, and focus on it. One most useful way to make yourself more interested in something is to ask questions. The more, the better!
Repeat (重复) things. It is the best way to remember things for a short time. For example, remembering a phone number for a few seconds. Grouping numbers may help you to remember them. For example, the following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in “grouping numbers”, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
Another way to remember something well is visualization (可视化). Draw a picture in your mind, and the stranger the picture is, the better you will remember it! Drawing mind maps is also helpful to remember something well. When you can remember the picture or the mind map, you can remember the most information.
Invent a story. To remember long lists, try inventing a story which includes all the items you want to remember. In experiments (实验), people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill. When they were tested afterwards, on average (平均) they could remember ninety percent!
Organize your ideas. If you can organize what you want to know as a whole, you can understand better when you learn more about that subject. Make well-organized notes and be sure things are clear in your mind. If not, ask questions until you understand it!
