The time has come for “Made in China” — and it’s a popular one.
The story of Chinese fashion (时尚) began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. It showed its new designs (设计) — sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.
Shaun Rein, the leader of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’(顾客的) eye by low prices. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands.”
Maybe it is because Chinese young people are now more confident about their own culture. Western culture doesn’t excite the Chinese youth as before.
“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements (元素).” Jin Qu, the leader of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols.
“In fact, many stars in the West are now interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese yellow dress to the Met Gala in New York.” The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.
“We have to move from making to creating,” Chinese-American designer Aric Chen once told The New York Times. “We want to take the place of the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’.”

Modern graffiti (涂鸦) began in some big cities in the United States in the 1970s. In New York, young people wrote their names or tags (称呼) with pens on walls around the city. One of the first taggers in the world was a teenager called Demetrius. His tag was TAKI 183. He wrote his tag on walls and in stations in New York. Other teenagers saw Demetrius’s tag and started writing their tags too. Soon, there were tags on walls, buses and trains all over New York.
Then, some teenagers started writing their tags with aerosol paint (罐装喷漆). Their tags were bigger and more colorful. Aerosol paint graffiti became very popular in the 1970s and 1980s.
In the 1990s and 2000s, a lot of graffiti artists started painting pictures. Some of the pictures were about politics (政治), while other artists wanted to make cities beautiful and painted big and colorful pictures.
In some countries and areas, artists can paint in certain places. In Taiwan, China, there are graffiti areas where artists can paint everywhere. In Sao Paulo, Brazil, some tourists visit the city just to see the street art. In Bristol, the UK, there is a street art festival in August every year. Lots of people come to watch the artists paint on all the buildings in a street.
