What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common That’s the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently.
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.
It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight — like walking or running — may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.

2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Jefferson’s statement made sense.
B.Jefferson was very fond of exercise.
C.Jefferson was on the way to doing exercise.
D.Jefferson increased the importance of exercise.
3.What’s mainly talked about in the text
A.The importance of exercise. B.How to choose a suitable sport.
C.How to keep healthy by exercising. D.The link between exercise and study.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.A
根据第一段中“What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common That’s the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently. (教室、电脑桌、自助食堂和图书馆有什么共同点?那是学生们花费大量时间的地方。虽然数小时的学习消耗脑力,但你的身体和大脑都需要体育锻炼才能有效运作)”可知,作者认为在通过学习消耗脑力之外,学生需要体育锻炼来维持身体和大脑的运作。由此推知,许多学生对锻炼不够重视。故选D项。
2.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. (托马斯·杰斐逊曾经写道,要想在学术研究上取得成功,一个人每天应该花两个小时锻炼身体,因为不能为了学习而牺牲健康。)”可知,托马斯·杰斐逊强调了日常锻炼的重要性,再结合画线词的下文“A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity. (塔夫茨大学研究人员的一项研究发现,自称每周至少锻炼3天的学生比那些不锻炼的学生更有可能拥有更好的身体健康状况和更大的幸福感。这项研究和其他证据表明,锻炼的真正好处可能不会在锻炼后立即显现,而是来自长期坚持有规律的活动)”可知,这项研究和其他证据都表明,长期有规律的活动对人的身心健康有益。因此,划线句子表示托马斯·杰斐逊的论述是有道理的。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The importance of exercise is nothing new. (锻炼的重要性并不是什么新鲜事)”以及最后一段中“You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.(你可能还会发现锻炼的另一个好处:增强自信。这可能会让你更容易参与课堂,并帮助你在学术和社交场合表现出色)”可知,文章强调了体育锻炼的重要性,通过引用托马斯·杰斐逊的观点和相关研究,作者指出定期锻炼可以提高身体健康和幸福感,减少一些疾病的风险,而且锻炼还能增强自信。故选A项。
We know that fruits and vegetables can help to keep our bodies healthy. According to a new study, eating fruits in middle age could also help to reduce the chances of developing depression later in life though we should pay attention to the amount of fruits we eat.
Researchers from China and Singapore wanted to find out more about whether eating fruits and vegetables could have an effect on our mental health. They looked at more than 13,700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore. The study period began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyone was asked about the fruits and vegetables they liked to eat. 14 fruits and 25 types of vegetables were included in the questionnaire.
The Chinese adults were followed for an average of almost 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that could decide whether older people develop depression. At the end of the study period, almost 3,200 people had the feeling of depression.
The researchers found that higher consumption of fruits during middle age was connected with a lower probability of developing depression in late life. Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least. However, they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression.
It was suggested that the reason for this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are often cooked. Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed.
All types of fruits were found to have an effect, especially oranges, bananas, papayas and watermelons.
4.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.By following participants for a long period of time.
B.By observing the physical health of the participants.
C.By conducting laboratory tests on fruits and vegetables.
D.By asking participants about the causes of their depression.
5.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The study process. B.The study purpose.
C.The study findings. D.The study objects.
6.Why might vegetables’ benefits be limited according to the researchers
A.Vegetables are often eaten raw. B.The types of vegetables are limited.
C.Vegetables are less popular than fruits. D.Cooking might reduce their nutritional value.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.The Connection between Diet and Mental Health
B.The Importance of Eating Raw Fruits and Vegetables
C.Vegetables: Their Limited Role in Preventing Depression
D.Fruits in Middle Age: A Key to Avoiding Depression Later
【答案】4.A 5.C 6.D 7.D
根据第三段“The Chinese adults were followed for an average of almost 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that could decide whether older people develop depression.(些中国成年人平均被跟踪了近20年。到那时,他们的年龄在61岁到96岁之间。他们被要求完成一份调查问卷,该问卷可以决定老年人是否会患上抑郁症。)”可知,研究人员通过长时间跟踪参与者进行这项研究。故选A。
根据第四段“The researchers found that higher consumption of fruits during middle age was connected with a lower probability of developing depression in late life. Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least. However, they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression.(研究人员发现,中年时多吃水果与晚年患抑郁症的可能性较低有关。与吃最少水果的人相比,吃最多水果的人患抑郁症的可能性要低29%。然而,他们并没有发现吃蔬菜和患抑郁症之间有任何联系。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是研究结果。故选C。
6.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed.(研究人员表示,烹饪蔬菜可能会限制食物中营养物质的“保护作用”,尽管他们表示还需要更多的研究。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“According to a new study, eating fruits in middle age could also help to reduce the chances of developing depression later in life though we should pay attention to the amount of fruits we eat.(根据一项新的研究,在中年吃水果也可以帮助减少以后患抑郁症的几率,尽管我们应该注意我们吃的水果的数量。)”

I was standing in the living room in my running clothes, struggling with an armband that was supposed to hold my phone.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if I could pay someone to exercise for me, and the fat would magically disappear from my body ” I said. “Thus, I wouldn’t have to suffer the hard work of doing it myself.”
My husband looked at me as if I were a nut. To me, running was the worst thing in the world. Running was for athletes or people who liked to hurt themselves. Running was for anyone but me.
“Come on, Mary,” my husband said. “No one can exercise for you! You must do it yourself to lose weight and be healthy!” I nodded, trying to wear the armband again and attach my phone to it. I needed the phone to listen to music to draw my attention from how much running would hurt. I also needed it so that I could hear the computer voice of my mile tracker (追踪器) telling me my physical condition with every passing mile.
I wasn’t getting any younger. Pushing myself to the limit had never before crossed my mind. But the pounds weren’t exactly disappearing though I improved my eating habits and hoped for the best. The annoying weight was slowly creeping (慢慢移动) to my legs and backside. Actually, it was creeping everywhere. As my doctor put it, “It’s time to put some exercise into your schedule.” My only hope for fighting against heavy weight and age would be through exercise. So here I was about to start the very thing I disliked.
“If you don’t hear from me in 30 minutes, come look for me. I could be lying on the side of the road. weak or dead,” I said to my husband.
Without even looking at me, my husband said, “Mary, it really won’t be so bad. You just have to get started. Believe me! You’ll do great!”
“Right,” I smiled as he continued preparing for his shift. Hesitating, I walked out alone. It was dark and cold outside.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Gathering my courage, I fired up the music and my mile tracker.______________________

Gathering my courage, I fired up the music and my mile tracker. I began to ran. My ears and nose felt painful in the freezing weather, and the upper parts of my legs pressed each other as I struggled to run forward slowly. I wanted to turn back. But I constantly told myself, “Just keep going for another ten seconds! You need to run for your health!” Within minutes, the air seemed less cold and I focused on the steady beat of the music, letting it carry me forward. Though each step was challenging, I felt myself gradually adapting to the exercise.
Upon finishing a 25-minute run for the first time, I called my husband. I told him about my experience. He laughed and said, “As I told you, running actually isn’t that frightening.” I agreed. In the following days, I kept running and always encouraged myself before heading out. Gradually, I settled into a routine of running every day. As I ran farther and farther, I grew increasingly fond of the activity. Running has enhanced not just my physical health, but other aspects of my life as well. While starting may be the hardest step, it is also the gateway to achieving everything we want.
