*what they grow in their region;
*what kinds of lives they lead;
*what they like and do not like.
Culture and cuisine go hand in hand, and if you do not experience one, you can never really know the other.

1. Have you ever eaten in a Western restaurant
2. In what ways was it different from a Chinese restaurant
I ate at one with my cousin last week. Every person gets their own food and doesn’t share. The tables are much smaller, which is good for conversation. The restaurant serves food like steak, spaghetti, and pizza, and people eat with a knife and fork.

Speaking activity
1. Where was it and what kind of restaurant was it What was it like
It was a Xinjiang restaurant in Beijing. It looked really special and the food was delicious. There was live entertainment including dancing and singing.
Speaking activity
For me, the kebab meat served on very large and pointy skewers was very different to what I am used to. It was cooked on an open fire, and at first I was quite scared. But after taking my first bite, I found it was so delicious I had to keep eating. It was a bit unusual to eat the kebab meat from the large skewer, but I quickly became used to it. There was also a large “naan” bread that seemed unique to the region. There was braised meat and potatoes on it. It was delicious too.
2. How was it different from what you are used to
炖肉
烤肉叉子
Speaking activity
It taught me that people there like to eat food as efficiently and tastily as possible. Serving the kebab meat on the skewer is certainly a much faster and more efficient way. Maybe in the past the skewer was a large sword that nomadic people used to skewer and cook meat while outside by a campfire. It made me want to learn more!
3. What did this experience teach you about the people of that culture or region
游牧民族
刀;剑
Speaking activity
Using your experience and what you have learnt in this class, write a passage on a dinning experience in a different culture/region.
