When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for disadvantageous events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience disadvantageous effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to operate at human levels have greatly expanded in popularity over the past year. These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing. Such tools, also known as chatbots or generative AI, are computer-powered systems. They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.
In recent months, these tools have demonstrated an ability to produce high-quality work. This has led some technology experts to warn that generative AI systems could end up replacing workers in many industries.
This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an experiment. It aimed to test how well AI tools could help workers perform their usual duties or tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultants, from Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group.
Harvard Business School recently published the results from the experiment in a working paper. The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker performance. For example, researchers found that, on average, workers who used OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4 tool completed 12 percent more tasks than non-ChatGPT users. Tasks carried out with help from the AI technology were completed 25 percent faster. And the team found the quality of work performed by consultants using ChatGPT 4 increased by about 40 percent.
However, the paper also noted areas where the performance of consultants using ChatGPT 4 dropped. The researchers said this was especially true with tasks the AI tool was not good at completing. “Of tasks the AI was good at, the experiment showed it significantly improved human performance,” the paper said. “But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.”
The team suggests one of the biggest barriers to companies effectively using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
28. What is a purpose of designing AI tools according to the text
A. To perform low-level writing. B. To replace technology experts.
C. To finish high-quality work. D. To improve interpersonal communication.
29. Why does the author mention ChatGPT 4 in paragraph 4
A. To explain the disadvantages of AI tools.
B. To show how well AI tools could help workers.
C. To forecast changes in the future working environment.
D. To compare the work performance between humans and AI tools.
30. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Companies need to balance the work of AI and humans.
B. It is useless to train so many workers to learn to use AI.
C. It is easy to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.
D. Research on using AI effectively has been made by businesses.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. ChatGPT Can See, Hear and Speak Now
B. Ways to Improve Your Performance at Work
C. The Fast Development of Artificial Intelligence
D. AI Tools Help but also Harm Worker Performance
D
The shiny leaves and branching roots of mangroves (红树林) in Australia are eye-catching, and now a study provides us with new findings about the trees. Long-term tidal cycles, in large part, set in motion the expansion and contraction of mangrove forests by the moon drive, researchers report in Science Advances. This discovery is key to predicting when mangroves are most likely to grow fast.
Mangroves are coastal trees, which are good at absorbing carbon and could help fight climate change. But in some places, the forests face plenty of menaces, including coastal development, pollution and land clearing for agriculture. Neil Saintilan, an environmental scientist in Sydney, worked out how the size and thickness of mangrove forests across Australia changed over time.
Saintilan noticed a curious pattern. Mangrove forests tended to expand and contract in a certain manner. “I saw this 33-year regular change,” Saintilan said.
That regularity got the researchers thinking about the moon. Over the course of 33 years the plane (平面) of the moon’s orbit around Earth slowly tilts (倾斜). When the moon’s orbit is the least tilted relative to the equator, semi-diurnal tides (半日潮)—which consist of two high and low tides each day—tend to have a larger range. Saintilan found that mangrove forests experiencing semi-diurnal tides tended to be larger and thicker when higher tides were expected based on the moon’s orbit, which could deliver much more water and necessary nutrients to mangroves.
It is important to recognize this effect on mangrove populations. Such knowledge could inform efforts to protect and restore the forests, thus promoting the growth of these trees. That might look like added limitations on human activity nearby that could harm the forests. But people should be more reactive.
32. Which of the following can be indicated from the new study about Australian mangroves
A. They can predict the motion of the moon.
B. Their favorable growth time is predictable.
C. Their functions are beyond normal imagination.
D. They do well in transforming carbon into oxygen.
33. What does the underlined word “menaces” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Doubts. B. Threats C. Opportunities. D. Solutions.
34. How does the moon affect mangroves’ growth in Australia
A. By decreasing the appearance of low tides.
B. By tilting frequently to offer more tides for the Earth.
C. By driving tides to provide beneficial elements for growth.
D. By generating semi-diurnal tides to reduce mangroves’ soil loss.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage
A. Knowledge of Protecting and Storing Mangroves.
B. Research about Expansion and Contraction of Forests.
C. Discovery on the Causes of High and Low Tides.
D. New Findings about Moon Drive and Mangroves.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There were three children in my family. Kind Larry was the oldest, followed by smart Emily and I. One year, our family moved into a bigger house and we each had our own room. Both Larry and Emily chose to live upstairs while I preferred living in the basement. Emily laughed at me because I picked a room with poor natural light. However, I never cared about it. I had a secret kept only between my brother Larry and me-I wanted to be the neighbor of our large refrigerator where something delicious was always stuffed including the whole family’s favorite-ice cream.
During the week, we drank only milk at our meals and never ate dessert. But Sunday was different- Mom would make her famous roast meat dinner and Dad would make an exception to the dessert rule. One Sunday, my father sat happily at the head of the table and said, “Great meal! I think we should finish it with something special, “He told my brother, “Larry, go downstairs and get Breyers!”
Breyers is a brand of ice cream, the family’s favorite. When it went on sale, my mother would buy some, about a gallon of it, storing it in the refrigerator in the basement for such a special occasion.
But when the moment really came, I spoiled it. For a few nights, I couldn’t resist the temptation and ate a half box of ice cream at the rate of a small spoonful per night. So when Larry was about to run downstairs, I hurriedly pulled his hand under the table. Larry turned to look at me and felt surprised, but he immediately understood what had happened.
Emily was impatient at the table, looking at her empty dinner plate and urging Larry to be quick. Larry didn’t move, and instead, he said to Dad, “Why don’t we enjoy it on Children’s Day ” Dad smiled, “We can eat again on that day. Come on, Larry! Go and get it!” I knew Larry didn’t look like himself today. He was an ice cream lover like everyone else present, but it was unbelievable that he should refuse to eat it today. I felt very sorry for making my brother Larry so embarrassed.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: With one more look at me, Larry had to walk slowly down to the basement.

第二节
With one more look at me, Larry had to walk slowly down to the basement. I felt extremely guilty for eating the ice cream. I wanted to confess, but I was too scared to speak up. As Larry returned with an empty container, everyone looked confused. Dad asked, “Where’s the ice cream ” Larry replied, “It looks like someone has eaten it all.” I lowered my head, hoping no one would notice my embarrassment.
To my great shock, just when I hesitated to admit it, Larry said, “Yes. I ate it.” My eyes widened in disbelief. Larry continued, “I was feeling hungry late at night and couldn’t resist the temptation. I’m sorry.” I was puzzled why Larry would take the blame for me. Later, when we were alone, Larry explained that he didn’t want me to feel guilty and wanted to teach me a lesson about honesty. I thanked him and promised to never do something like that again. From that day on, I became more truthful and responsible.

(19) I hope to know each one of you very well. I am from Washington D.C., and I have worked at technology companies for my whole career. I love working with computers, and I am good at it. I believe that I can help you a lot. But I know you will teach me things, too! I want us to have regular meetings every month where we can talk about our ideas for the company and for our customers. But still, it’s up to you guys. My goal is to make our company a place where we can discuss everything about our work. In the following week, please feel free to come to me and talk about your new ideas or any change you want us to make. I believe only our staff feel better at work, can our new computers become better. (20) I believe we will work very well together in the future. Thank you for listening and have a great day!
