As most people know, in the last few years, sandstorms have swept across many cities and areas of North China, polluting the air and disturbing daily lives of human beings. People look dirty and suffer many kinds of illnesses, such as breath difficulty. The sandstorm is such a serious problem that it has not only undermined the industrial and agricultural development of our country but also caused a lot of trouble to the living conditions of the Chinese people. It is expected that effective measures should be taken as soon as possible through our joint efforts to stop its happening.
So what should we do with the frightening sandstorms Some experts put forward practical advice as follows: For one thing, more funds(基金) ought to be put into tree planting and forest protection in order to keep more water resources within the surface of the Earth. For another, government of all countries should make laws on environment protection. For example, banning the use of throw-away chopsticks and punishing illegal tree cutting. Scientists should also study and find ways to decrease the grade of its destruction and to improve the environment.
How people look forward to sunny days with little breeze(微风) touching their faces now and forever! However, I am fully confident that the golden days can come back so long as everyone tries his best to protect the natural environment from today on.

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of big industrial plants for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dustbin would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy of nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million citizens and discover exactly what raw(未经加工的) materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be treated like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements(元素) from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final step.
The first full-scale (全方位的) big recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dustbins, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

Nowadays many people are concerned about the problem of what to do with electronic waste such as old televisions, computers, radios, cellular telephones and other electronic equipment.
Electronic trash, or e-waste, is piling up faster than ever in American homes and businesses. People do not know what to do with old televisions or computers so they throw them in the trash.
National Solid Waste Management Association (NSWMA) state programs director Chaz Miller says the large amount of electronic waste Americans product is not unexpected.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates more than 400 million consumer electronic items are dumped each year, and there is a push by more states to ban the waste from landfills(垃圾填埋场) and create recycling programs. They can be torn apart and sorted for useable parts. Mike Fannon who runs the plant in Baltimore says, "There are lots of valuable metals that can be recovered and reused instead of just putting them in the landfill, and in certain components there are some materials that should not really be in the landfill."
Fannon says nearly 20 percent of electronic waste is recycled nationwide. Thirteen years ago, it was only about 6 percent. Recycling rates continue to rise as more communities have banned electronics from landfills in order to keep e-waste poisons like lead(铅) and mercury(汞) out of garbage dumps.
This year several states like Vermont imposed a ban on electronic waste in landfills. More than 25 other states have also adopted bans on e-waste in landfills. Chaz Miller says more can be done to boost electronic waste recycling.

107. According to Mike Fannon, what might be the best way of dealing with e-waste
A. Recycling it. B. Selling it. C. Burying it. D. Breaking it.
108. What can we learn from the passage

Drinking Water: Bottled or From the Tap(水龙头)
In America, people will include a case or two of bottled water when buying the week's groceries. When they are going to a soccer game or activity, it's common for them to grab a cold bottle of water out of the fridge with them. In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, about 29 billion bottles a year.
But all these plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment. In order to make all the 29 billion bottles, producers use 17 million barrels of oil, which is enough to keep a million cars going for 12 months.
So why don't people drink water straight from the tap Some people have a strong belief that bottled water is better than water out of the tap, but that's not necessarily true. In the US, the local governments make sure water from the tap is safe. There is also growing concern that chemicals in the bottles themselves may go into the water.
People love the convenience of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a reusable steel container instead of plastic.
Some argue that plastic bottle recycling can help. Recycled bottles can be turned into items like carpeting or clothing. Unfortunately, only one in six bottles is recycled. The rest make it to landfills(垃圾填埋场) or end as trash in other places. Plastic bottles take hundreds of years for them to disintegrate.
Water is important for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use water bottles, and see if you can make a change.
And yes, you can make a difference. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.
109. How many cars can be kept going for a year by the oil used to make 29 billion bottles
A. 100. B. 1,000. C. 100,000. D. 1,000,000.

八、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)
You must have written your research paper, your personal essay, your book review—whatever your school class requires. You think you have provided good information in the needed number of words. 113.
But is it really done Many teachers and professional writers believe that writing is revision. 114.
Revision of writing is a necessary skill for students. The classroom is a good place to practice patience, concentration and listening. There are rewards with spending time with your thoughts and really taking time to compose your ideas in an orderly and reasonable way. You should put away your paper after you have written a first version, or draft. Wait several hours, maybe overnight, before working on it more. 115. Not only are you refreshed, but you're looking at things through different eyes. That's what revision literally means—to see again through different eyes.
Following a four-step process may help you with your paper. The first step in the process is invention. It includes forming many questions about your subject. It is called "question-storming". 116. Then comes the revision period. Take your time to read what you've written, to think about it, and maybe to re-shape it based on what you see now, as a kind of new person looking at it with a reader's eyeglasses rather than a writer's. The fourth step is called "publication". 117. In a sense, anytime you turn it over to another person, that's publication.
Probably, the process takes away some of the tension of writing. And worry about the quality of your writing often disappears when you share that writing.
A. Perfect writing is not possible.
B. In the second step, you draft and compose a paper.
C. And you feel good because your work is finished.
D. This is just like returning to a job after a vacation.
E. This does not mean your writing is professional publication.
F. What is most important is getting your thoughts and ideas on paper.
G. In other words, writing well means making needed changes and rewriting.
