Do you remember the man who contributed a lot to the understanding of British and American English Noah Webster, born on October 16, 1758, is known for The American Dictionary of the English Language. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education". His "Blue-Backed Speller" books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children. But how much do you know about him beyond that
At the age of 16, Noah Webster began attending Yale College. Unfortunately, he spent his four years at Yale during the American Revolutionary War, and, because of food shortages, many of his college classes were held in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Later, he served in the army.
Having graduated from Yale in 1778, Webster wanted to continue his education in order to earn his law degree. He had to teach school in order to pay for his education. He set up many small schools that didn't survive, but he was a good teacher because instead of forcing his students to learn, like most teachers did, he rewarded them.
He earned his law degree in 1781, but did not practice law until 1789. Once he started he found the law was not to his liking. Webster did not have much money.
In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $1500 to move to New York City to edit a newspaper. In December, he founded New York's first daily newspaper, American Minerva, and edited it for four years. For decades, he published textbooks, political essays, a report on some diseases, and newspaper articles for his party. He wrote so much that a modern list of his published works required 655 pages.
Noah Webster died on May 28, 1843 and was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery.

Inspired by a 9-year-old cyclist who uses only part of one hand, a group of University of Guelph students has won an international award for their invention—a bike brake lever (刹车手柄). It pulls both the front brake and the back brake at the same time.
Lauren Turner was able to ride her bike, but not as confidently and quickly as her friends.
"She couldn't use the front brake. She was only using the back brake, but the front brake makes you stop twice as fast," says Micha Wallace, who with Katie Bell, Anina Sakaguchi and Andrew Morris won second prize in the James Dyson Awards for their single-handed bike braking lever.
"She used it all last summer and she had no problems. She said it helped her go faster because she felt more confident in her braking abilities. She felt safer." says Wallace.
The invention was the fourth-year design project for the four students. They designed, tested and created a prototype(模型) within a four-month period.
When Wallace heard about the James Dyson Awards on the news, she and her co-inventors entered their project in the UK-based contest. The contest mainly rewards student designers who create products that improve the way we live. The Guelph students collected the second prize -£2,000 for them, plus £500 for their school.
As well, they had a chance to meet James Dyson, a UK inventor. While praising the students for their creativity, Dyson said the single-handed lever could improve safety for all cyclists. "By using both brakes at once," he explains, "you could prevent the possibility of flying over the handlebars and ending up with an injury."
The students are hoping to sell the patent to a major company. It may be used in other devices that require two hands for operation.
99. The bike brake lever was designed for the purpose of .
A. winning James Dyson Awards
B. helping people become confident
C. applying for a patent for the invention
D. helping the disabled ride their bike safely
100. What can we know about the inventors of the brake lever
A. They created the invention in four years.
B. They won their school£500 for their invention.
C. They won the James Dyson Awards for four times.
D. They sold their patent to a major company.
101. From the passage, we could infer that the brake lever .
A. has already been widely used
B. also improves the bike's speed
C. is only useful for disabled cyclists
D. will have a wide market in the future
D
Most of the 20th century has been a development on the Industrial Revolution taken to an extreme: people now own more products than ever before; there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth several times over; there is hardly any forest left and pollution has got to the point where we buy water. Within a few years I predict you will be able to buy air (There once was a time when you didn't need to buy food or shelter either.).
Important developments in the last century are the breaking down of the class structures left over from the Industrial Revolution stage, bringing with it the empowerment of the “common man”: the working day is set by law to only 8 hours a day, everyone has the vote, the media has less obvious government control, people have landed on the moon, sent spacecrafts to Mars and so on. Families have also shrunk drastically(强烈地); the nuclear family came about, and especially in the last half of the 20th century, one-parent families are becoming more common. This shrinking in the size of the family shows the increased independence of people—once upon a time people had to live in large groups to survive.
As humans have “become the gods”, they have realized their individuality and independence and taken their control of the world to an extreme. In many countries the land is almost completely used in the production of food and as living space and they live in small cities which are entirely human constructed, made from materials which are also entirely human constructed(concrete, bricks) with hardly any remains of nature. Weeds are poisoned because they are messy; even parks have trees grown in tidy lines; grass is mowed to keep it short and so on. I think the massive drug “problem” troubling people is a result of too much of this influence, humans needing to escape the stark world they have created by entering fantasy worlds.
Over the last 100 years, the 20th century consciousness has spread throughout the world; most of Asia has been thoroughly “Westernized”, and most of the Third World is being overrun by Western ways of doing things and living.
102. What's the author most concerned about
A. The influence of pollution.
B. Strong effects of development.
C. Changed positions of humans as gods.
D. The process of the Industrial Revolution.
103. What is the author's attitude towards the changes of the 20th century
A. Objective. B. Tolerant. C. Positive. D. Negative.
104. What does the underlined word “stark” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Unfair. B. Illegal. C. Dull. D. Violent.

Do's and Don'ts of Donating
Giving up your unused or unwanted stuff is a great way to make space in your home for the items that you do enjoy on a regular basis. 105. Here are 10 do's and don'ts of donating your belongings.
DO Prep Your Clothes.
You've thoroughly cleaned out your closets and drawers, and have a mountain of clothing waiting to be donated. Before you bag up these pieces, inspect each one to ensure that they're in good condition. Make sure all buttons are accounted for, and that you can't see any stains. 106.
DON'T Donate Damaged Items.
The number one rule of donating your stuff is to make sure that it's in good, usable condition. Don't pass along clothes or furniture with rips(裂口) or stains, chipped dishes, books that are missing pages, or games with lost pieces. 107. Find a local company that will recycle these items instead.
DO Donate More than Just Clothes.
108. Stuffed animals, framed pictures, unused candles, small power tools, sports equipment, ornaments, baskets, blenders, dishes, glassware, utensils, silverware, pots and pans, curtains, blankets, toasters, mixers, pillows, towels, bed sheets, bikes, and exercise equipment are much sought after donations.
109.
With a little common sense it's easy to figure out items that are ideal for donation. But unfortunately some people will throw away the contents of their home without a second thought. As a gentle reminder, it's never a good idea to donate car parts, flammable products, construction materials, weapons, or explosives.
A. Nobody wants to inherit your damaged belongings.
B. Food donations are always in need.
C. DON'T Even Think of Donating These Items.
D. Not sure where to start
E. DON'T Donate Large Appliances.
F. Clothes aren't the only household items that can be donated.
G. Wash the items to make them fresh and ready for their new owner.

W:Some are very specific, such as weather information. Some are more general, such as information on business, law, government, medicine and many other areas.

Text 10
W:Money is one of the most important inventions because if we didn't have money there would be no trade. In the past, all kinds of things have been used for money, including gold, seashells and even dead rats.No one really knows when money was invented. It's believed that coins were invented in China because metal has been used for centuries and we do know that paper money was invented in China too, sometime around the 10th century AD.But it wasn't until the 9th century that Europe began using money. When it was first invented, there were many different kinds. But now,of course we are heading towards single, world money.I mean, already the American dollar is used for international trade, and now many countries in Europe use the Euro, instead of the Franc or Mark. However,it will be a long time before there is a single, global currency.
