Charles sat in the dining room with five other students, waiting for Ms. Swanson to interview all of them. Ms. Swanson, the seventh-grade science teacher, was looking for a lab helper. Charles's hands were sweaty(出汗的) and his face felt hot. He wondered if his face was red—and if anyone would notice.
As he prepared for his interview, Charles reviewed a set of cards with notes that he had made earlier. On the cards, he had written answers to questions that Ms. Swanson might ask and some lab requirements. "The emergency(应急的) eyewash station is not a place to get a drink of water," he quietly read aloud from one card. "Put on your lab coat or you'll not be allowed into the school science lab. Have strong shoes to protect your feet from broken glass," he continued to read from another card.
Looking up, Charles decided to check out the other candidates. Nearby, a girl with dark red hair was putting her own set of cards in order. He watched as she tore a card into tiny pieces and put the pieces into a pocket. Suddenly she looked up at Charles. "Are you nervous " she asked. "No, I'm not nervous —not at all," Charles said. "What about you " "Uh, no, me neither," the girl answered.

According to the "Education Research Center, United States", around 7,000 high school students drop out of school every day! The high rates of dropping out are propelled(推动) by social issues in education. These issues basically have two kinds of impact—firstly, the student's performance suffers and secondly, the teacher's expectations do not remain the same for everybody. That's why certain political issues on education have been raised to deal with these social problems.
The government is running various bilingual(双语的) programs in schools, where majority of students belong to immigrant families. This helps them learn English and other subjects faster. Secondly, the government has come up with "private-school vouchers(凭证)", with the help of which students of public schools can attend private schools to get a superior education.
Some current issues in education with regards to politics, which require immediate attention by policy makers are-providing family and medical leave to all working parents so that they can spend quality time with their children, providing financial support to low-income families and single mothers, giving scholarships to teachers to study further and running training programs for them and lastly, taking steps to prevent the spread of HIV, STDs among adolescents.
The government has to make certain policies and see to it that they are implemented properly, to tackle these issues. Besides political will, a change in society's attitude is needed too, to ensure that these issues do not arise any further.
85. The private-school vouchers can be used to .

88. What is the author's attitude towards the current education issues
A. He is satisfied with them. B. He shows no interest in them.
C. He feels worried about them. D. He thinks they are terrible.

There are a number of different ways to study a language, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. You may find a combination of these is a best choice for you.
If you can find a course in the language you want to learn in your country, this is quite a good way to study. A variety of courses are usually available, including part-time and full-time courses. If you look around, you can probably find a course that suits your needs.
The main advantage of such courses is that you'll have a teacher to provide you with instructions, support and with whom to practice your language. You will also be studying with others who are at more or less the same level and you can exchange ideas with them and help one another.
One choice is to study a language in a country where it's spoken. There are many schools teaching English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, but far fewer teaching other languages. The main advantage of studying abroad is that you are totally in the language, not just in class, but the rest of the time as well. As a result, you can make rapid progress.
The main disadvantage of studying abroad is the cost, not just of your course, but also of your food and travel. However, if you're a native speaker of English, you could get a job teaching English in a country where the language you want to learn is spoken.
Studying online is also a good choice. There are plenty to choose from a lot of languages. Many are free but there are some you have to pay for. Some of the paid ones provide support from teachers via email, chat programs, video conferencing, telephone or even face to face.
89. Studying in your country has many advantages except that .
A. there are many courses to choose from
B. you can study with others of the same level
C. all the courses are free of charge
D. the teacher can offer you instructions and practice
pared with two other ways, the obvious disadvantage of studying abroad lies in its .
A. various courses B. high cost
C. studying time D. job chances
91. The online courses .
A. are all free of charge
B. can't be found everywhere
C. can be easily taken on the Internet
D. are all supported by teachers
92. What can we learn from this passage
A. Studying abroad is the only good way to study English.
B. All the online courses are very easy to study.
C. If you study a language in your own country, you can study with more partners of the same level.
D. You can get any job you like after studying abroad.
D
Parents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades. Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.
The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools except them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.
Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task. "They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice."
Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.
Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success. "A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."
93. The underlined expression "parental involvement" in paragraph 1 probably means .
A. parents' expectation on children's health
B. parents' participation in children's education
C. parents' control over children's life
D. parents' plan for children's future
94. What is the major finding of Robinson's study
A. Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.
B. Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.
C. Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.
D. Parents are not able to help with children's homework.
95. The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should .
A. help children realize the importance of schooling
B. set a specific life goal for their children
C. spend more time improving their own lives
D. take a more active part in school management

Text 9
The role of the farmer has always been an important one. But the farmer in America has had to change with the times.
Two hundred years ago, 95% of American workers were farmers. Agriculture was America's biggest industry. Today, less than 3% of American workers are farmers. Yet agriculture still is America's biggest industry. It employs more workers than any other industry, and it produces more food than Americans can use—enough to make the United States the world's largest exporter of agriculture goods. That's to say the U.S. sells the most agriculture goods abroad in the world.
American farmers used to grow only enough food to feed their families and animals. Now each farmer grows enough to feed 78 other people. American farmers produce more today because they use modern farming and business methods. This means they have to know more than before.
American farmers still learn about soil, the weather, harmful insects, and plant and animal diseases, but they also must learn about international trade, and even computers.
