There should only have been one winner. On the river bank was Jessica Wanstall, 4 ft 10 in tall weighing less than six stone (84 lb) and something of a tiddler among anglers. In the river was a monster, a near 9 ft catfish that hit the scales at a record 13 st 8 lb (193 lb).
But despite its size and whiskery age, the fish was no match for the skills of 11-year-old Jessica who waged a 20-minute battle to land her prize.
Jessica, from Sittingbourne, Kent, hooked the fish during a trip with her father to the Ebro River in North-East Spain. She said, "I didn't realize just how big it was until I saw the photos afterwards. I look tiny next to it."
"My dad thought it was going to be a small one and I told him it didn't feel small when I picked up the rod. It was really hard work pulling it in and my arms turned to jelly."
"My dad helped lift it on to the bank and I just laughed when I saw it. It was massive."
Her father Mark, a 49-year-old engineer, helped return the catfish to the river after his daughter's triumph was photographed.
He said, "Jessica normally catches tiddlers but just loves a day's fishing."
"As the fish got near we could see how big it was. Then its tail came out of the water and it looked like the Loch Ness Monster. Everybody on the bank was gasping. I'm so proud of her." And so he should be.
According to the International Game Fish Association, Jessica has set a world record for a freshwater fish caught by an angler aged 16 and under. "Her catfish easily outweighs the previous record—a 120 lb Nile perch caught at Murchison Fall, Uganda, in July 2000," a spokesman said.

We all know about bananas. They are rich in vitamins A, B6 and C and in potassium(钾), and humans eat large numbers of them. But what about the banana leaf itself
The banana leaf may have been used earlier as the modern paper plate. Eating food served on a banana leaf is healthier than eating food off plastic, steel or other plates. Since the leaf can hold a large amount of food, it requires fewer rounds of serving and thus it is easy when you are serving parties of 1000 people. When the meal is finished, the leaf can be composted(制成堆肥).
A banana leaf can also serve as a frying pan. This means that you don't have to use oil and it is a healthy way of cooking food. When banana leaves are used to wrap(包裹) packets of rice and dishes, they add a special flavour(气味) to the food.
In Sri Lanka, when fruits are being transported by lorry, banana leaves serve as packing materials to prevent them from getting squashed(挤压变形). In this way, they are far more environmentally-friendly than plastic wrapping materials. Another advantage is that when banana leaves are used, they help to keep the freshness of the fruits.
On rainy days, villagers in many parts of the world hold banana leaves over their heads to keep them from getting wet! Banana leaves are sometimes used as wedding decorations, where they are thought to bring good luck and wealth to the couple getting married. In places such as Haiti, when the leaves are dried, they are used to make attractive food baskets and salad bowls.
The many uses of banana leaves make them an important part of traditional life in countries such as Sri Lanka and they are a perfect example of the human ability to find a purpose for even the most ordinary items. The banana and its leaf together form one of nature's truly useful creations.

102. This text is mainly about .

Blue Balliett's mysteries are mainly about stolen items, kidnappings(诱拐) and kid crime-solvers. Her new book, Hold Fast, is no exception. When 11-year-old Early Pearl's father suddenly disappears, she and her family end up living in a homeless shelter. As the story develops, Early learns her father's disappearance is tied to the theft of valuable jewels. The following is the interview of TFK with Balliett.
TFK:
BALLIETT: Years ago I was reading the newspapers about more and more families in the United States who were losing their homes. However, I wasn't hearing much about the kids. I got really interested in the fact that these kids were too invisible(无形的). Therefore, once I met some of the kids in Chicago, I was even more determined because they were just like kids I met everywhere else. They were talking about their lives and I thought, no one was listening to these kids. I wanted to change that. I wanted to give kids who were in the complicated situation of losing a home a chance to be the kids who could shine in this book.
TFK: To which character from Hold Fast are you most similar
BALLIETT: I would have to say I would be most like Early although I think Early is much cooler than I was when I was little. I'm pretty determined when I want to get something done, and Early is a determined character, too.
TFK: Why do you set most of your books in Chicago
BALLIETT: I love Chicago. It's a city where you can find out so many puzzles and stories. It has all kinds of people and real-life mysteries to be worked on. All the factual-sounding things in my books are real. I learn a lot when I write a book.
TFK: Do you enjoy writing books for kids

BRITONS may like to complain a lot, but they rarely do so right away, explains BBC writer Ruth Margolis. They would rather complain afterward.
This is because Britons hate to put someone out and cause any embarrassment. Margolis writes, "For instance, I'm much more comfortable just leaving that lump(小块) of raw chicken on my plate (instead of complaining to restaurant staff). But beware: If this kind of thing happens when you're dining with an American, they will most likely speak up on your behalf and not understand why you find this humiliating(丢脸的)."
In a BBC blog post comparing cultural differences between the UK and the US, Margolis mentions a few other things that Americans like to do but are offensive to Britons.
Not making introductions
Americans rarely remember to introduce a new friend to their friends at parties. Strangers are supposed to introduce themselves. But Margolis says most Britons dislike this approach because "talking to strangers without a facilitator(引导者) gives them a stomachache".
"Quite" good
Using "quite" to mean "very" happens a lot in the US. But if you are invited to a dinner party in a British household, don't describe the meal as "quite good" if you want to express high praise. To Britons' ears, "quite" detracts from the "good": The meal was passable but could have been better.
Money Talk
Americans can talk about money subjects for hours without feeling uncomfortable. For Britons, says Margolis, "Talking about how much we make is unthinkable—only less so than discussing our feelings."
Over-politeness
In the US, it is not unusual to be greeted by a perfect stranger as "honey" or "sweetie". But Margolis says Britons find put-on friendliness, especially in stores, deeply irritating(使人生气的). "It's not that I want shop assistants to be actively rude. But neither do I want to expend energy responding to someone who's been paid to ask, 'How are you today '" says Margolis.
108. According paragraph 1, leaving the chicken lump on the plate implies that .
A. he has finished his meal
B. the chicken he has is not fresh
C. he wants to be friendly
D. he feels not pleased with the meal
109. Which is NOT mostly accepted by Britons in parties
A. Exchanging each other's names.
B. Being helped by a facilitator.
C. Introducing themselves to strangers.
D. Being introduced to others.
110. The underlined word "passable" has the similar meaning to the one in " ".
A. Her English pronunciation is passable, which is not too bad
B. The mountain roads are not passable until late spring
C. The pattern is no longer passable with every passing day
D. Is this road passable to the Alps
111. Compared with Americans, Britons tend to be .
A. easy-going B. conservative C. shy D. calm
112. What is the article mainly about
A. Margolis' discovery about Americans.
B. Good manners in Britain.
C. Common habits of Americans that annoy Britons.

八、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)
Once a child reaches their teenage years, many parents may think it is too late to help them change a negative attitude. This is not the case, and while it may take longer, it is possible to help your child develop a positive attitude. Having a positive attitude is important to a teenager's happiness and success. 113.
Judge your own attitude. 114. Teens watch their parents and how they react to certain experiences and events. Children learn a good part of their belief system from their parents. Therefore, a parent's attitude and a loving home environment are important to help develop positive attitudes in teens.
115. This is the little voice in our heads which we use to communicate with ourselves. Positive self-talk will have a direct influence on how positive a person's attitude and actions are. Tell your teen instead of using negative statements, replace them with positive ones. For example, "I can do this right. I just need to concentrate" is much better than "I failed again. I never do anything right." If you promote positive self-talk you should notice a clear change in the teenager's attitude.
Teach your teen to aim high, while showing her how to acknowledge her limitations.
116. If your teen wants to achieve the impossible, this will only make her feel negatively when she fails to do it. Unrealistic expectations are one of the biggest causes of negative attitudes in children, says the Kids Health website.
Try to praise your teenager when he deserves it. Show him you value him and recognize when he makes positive choices. 117. Be sure to give credit when credit is due. Your teen's attitude will be much more positive if you also show him respect as well as command it from him.
A. Teach them how to self-talk.
B. A child's attitude is a learned behavior.
C. Avoid unkind blames to affect your teen's attitude.
D. A negative attitude can result in them feeling upset.
E. There is no problem having reasonable dreams.
F. Most teenagers will bask in their parent's praise.
G. Encourage him to take up new hobbies or interests.

Time and tide wait no man. My mother is becoming a middle-age woman quietly. She had been busy running after us all the years. My father is very busy every day outside. But the heavy burden falls on my mother's shoulder. Because my school is far from my home, I have to go to school by the train and my mother sees me off at the station every time. I often choose a seat where is close to the window, so I can see her. However, I always can't help run tears from my eyes. All the buildings and people outside the window disappear. I wave gentle to my mother and I look at her till the view of her back disappears. Up to now, even if he is busy, she still does it as usual. The view of my mother's back will never change in my heart.

M: Track events are really demanding - they require development of the whole body. So what's your record for the 100-meter dash
W: 11'4. I broke the university record last year. What events are you in
M: The long jump and high jump.
W: What's your record for the high jump
M: 2.20 meters.
W: Not bad. I hope you get first place at the sports meet.
(Text 7)
W: May I ask you a question, Johnny
M: Of course. I have a little time - I just finished my English paper.
W: Can you help me solve this math problem
M: Which one
W: Look, here, the last question on page 70. I have been working on it for two days but still haven't made any progress.
M: I see. It is a bit difficult; I spent about a day solving it myself.
W: Great! So you can explain it to me
M: Wait a moment; let me look for my notes.
W: Thanks, it's very kind of you.
M: My pleasure. By the way, I don't think we can stay here. The library will close soon.
W: How about coming to my house then, since classes are over for the day
(Text 8)
M: Have you ever tried shopping online
W: No, never. I prefer to actually see and touch what I'm buying before I pay for it, especially for clothes and shoes.
M: That's right. Seeing is believing.
W: My roommate Jane said once she bought a bicycle online; it turned out to be quite different from what she had seen on the website advertisement.
M: That happens, and you never know when the e-shop may suddenly disappear. This is what worries me most.
W: What's more, it's not always so safe for us to pay online as others might steal the user's personal information.
M: It's said that some measures have been taken to deal with this problem. Paying online is much safer than before, but I still have the feeling that it's not safe enough.
W: I can't agree more. That's why I only go shopping in real shops.
M: Me too. Usually I surf online shops to check out products that I want to buy, and then I go to a physical store with my friends to do the actual shopping.
W: That's a good idea.
(Text 9)
M: Have you ever read Hamlet
W: Yes, it's one of Shakespeare's greatest masterpieces. I read it twice when I was at college. Why do you ask
M: My English Literature teacher wants us to read it and write a book report. That will be a part of our final exam. We have only two weeks left now.
W: Have you finished reading it
M: Not quite. It's really a big book for me. Last night, I started reading it in the library with my roommate. I spent two hours reading it, but I finished only 16 pages. My roommate got a bit farther - he got through four pages more than me.
W: So what's the problem
M: The book was written in old English, so that I can't read it very quickly, and you know, my vocabulary is very poor. Now I regret not having done much reading earlier.
W: Well, you're really not to blame for that. It's really difficult. In that age, people had many
different customs and phrases that even modern British people can't understand very well.
M: What should I do then
W: Use your dictionary and reference books to help you get through it.
M: Good idea. I guess I can also write down what I don't understand and ask my teacher about it.

Many years ago watching television was a completely different experience. If you were lucky you had a few channels to watch. In the 1970s cable TV gave us a choice of several different programs, not only from the local area. In the last ten years Internet television has been growing rapidly. Today Smart TV offers the user a new way of selecting from the thousands of items. TV programs are often divided into groups, so if you choose comedy, a Smart TV can offer not only the shows and movies that are now being shown on various TV channels but also comedy on YouTube or other video networks. Because of the wide variety of content it can take a while to find what you are looking for. Smart TV can mark shows as favorites. Such modern TV sets are not only limited to videos. They allow you to visit your Facebook account or communicate with friends around the world via Skype. Smart TVs can talk or communicate with your mobile phone or desktop computer.
The new generation of television sets, however, still has a long way to go before they are fully accepted. For one thing, they must become easier to use. For another, slow Internet connection is also a problem. After all, nobody wants to wait hours to download a film.
