As we drove along the country road, a herd of deer emerged as if by magic, surrounding us from all sides. I shouted at my husband to slow down and avoid hitting them. We were coming to a stop when the car doors flew open and we sprang out of the car. A deer lay injured by the roadside, with its eyes wide open. While some deer scattered, a few remained at a safe distance, observing the scene. “I have to call the police,” my husband said.
As we waited for help, a nearby resident came out of his house, angrily shouting instructions. I told him that we had already contacted the police. He stood at his doorway, arms crossed, watching us. I know he wanted to make sure we didn’t leave the scene.
I suggested calling a 24-hour veterinarian clinic, but before doing so, I noticed a slight movement in the deer’s back leg. We watched as she struggled to rise. After several minutes, she managed to stand. She turned her head to look at us, and then leapt gracefully toward the forest.
I raced after her until she disappeared into the forest. Tears streamed down my face, a mix of joy that she could run again and fear for her survival. I walked back to the car just as the police arrived. Our “security guard” returned to his house, satisfied that his role was complete.
After listening to our account, the police praised us for remaining at the scene. They told us that deer are resilient creatures and that she would survive.
The following day, we revisited the scene. The area showed no signs of blood. I discovered a piece of our car’s plastic bumper with the deer’s fur attached to it. I picked it up and took it home.
Whenever I see a deer walking through the forest along our country road, I wonder if it was our deer from that summer evening.

A new study, published in Psychological Science, finds that people who think they can learn from their mistakes have a different brain reaction to mistakes than people who think intelligence is fixed.
“One big difference between people who think intelligence is malleable (可塑的) and those who think intelligence is fixed is how they respond to mistakes,” says Jason S. Moser, of Michigan State University. Studies have found that people who think intelligence is malleable say things like, “When the going gets tough, I put in more effort.” or “If I make a mistake, I try to learn and figure it out.” On the other hand, people who think that they can't get smarter will not take opportunities to learn from their mistakes. This can be a problem in school. For example, a student who thinks her intelligence is fixed will think it's not worth bothering to try harder after she fails a test.
For this study, Moser and his colleagues gave participants a task that was easy to make a mistake on. They were supposed to identify the middle letter of a five-letter series like “MMMMM”, “MMNMM” or “NNMNN”. Sometimes the middle letter was the same as the other four, and sometimes it was different.
While doing the task, the participants wear a cap on his or her head that records electrical activity in the brain. When someone makes a mistake, their brain makes two quick signals: an initial response that indicates something has gone wrong—the “Oh, crap” response, as Moser calls it—and a follow-up signal that indicates an attempt to correct the mistake.
A bigger second signal was displayed in the participants who were better able to recover from making a mistake—that is, those who believed that they could learn from such a mistake—than in the participants who had negative feelings about a mistake and believed that their failure was due to their own shortcomings.
“This research might help us understand why exactly the two types of individuals show different behaviors after mistakes and could help in training people to believe that they can work harder and learn more, by showing how their brain is reacting to mistakes,” Moser says.
8. Why won't some people learn from their mistakes
A. Their brain doesn't react to mistakes.
B. They don't think they can do better.
C. Their brain doesn't deal with mistakes.
D. They don't think they have made a mistake.
9 What was the purpose of the five-letter series
A. To make the participants make a mistake.
B. To test the participants' ability to identify letters.
C. To help the participants to identify the middle letter.
D. To train the participants to be careful with mistakes.
10. What happened in the brain of those with negative feelings about a mistake
A There was no follow-up signal.
B. There were a few follow-up signals.
C. There was a bigger follow-up signal.
D. There was a smaller follow-up signal.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Avoiding Mistakes Is Possible
B. How You Respond to Mistakes Matters
C. Why There Are Brain Signals After a Mistake
D. Brain Reactions to Mistakes Show Intelligence

Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
12. What did the new study aim to explore
A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health.
C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active.
13. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment
A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises.
C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature.
14. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later
A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested.
C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks.
15. What might the author’s marathon running prove
A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart.
C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring (拳击赛场). She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔). That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve (开辟) her own path.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork (步法) and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates (候选人). Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made úp her mind to stick with her choice.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Para l: Then Kelly began her training, keeping it a secret from her mom. Every day after school, Kelly dashed to the boxing gym, occupying herself with the intense training. Even when she was made fun of by boys in the gym, she bit her lip tightly and continued her training. Finally, the tryout came. Extremely nervous though, she stepped into the boxing ring, moved fast and punched hard to the surprise of other candidates. After the tryout, Kelly left the gym confidently, knowing she did her best.
Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. To her delight, Kelly found her name on the list. At dinner that day, Kelly gathered her courage and said to her mom, “I'm sorry, Mom. I've made the boxing team and I'm ready to carve my own path.” At first, a flicker of disbelief and shock crossed her mom's face, but after a long, heart-to-heart talk, she gave Kelly a bear hug and whispered softly, “I'm so proud of you for being yourself. ”
