No amount of begging (乞求) would change my father’s mind about getting a pet. No matter how desperately I begged, his answer was "No! " Finally, I accepted that he was not going to change his mind. I did the only thing that I could. I spent as much time as possible around other people’s pets and I often spent time at a place called Best Friends, an animal shelter near my house. Animals ended up there when their owners could no longer care for them.
Whenever I visited the shelter (收容所), I dreamed about taking one of the dogs home with me. One day after school, I stopped off at Best Friends like I usually did. Suddenly, I saw a large, shaggy, yellow dog standing in the corner, and when he saw me, he wagged his tail and began whining (哀鸣).
“That’s Fenway,” Renee, the woman at the desk, said. “He whines continuously. His owners brought him here when they moved overseas.”
“He must be lonely,” I suggested.
“Your parents won’t let you have a dog ” Renee asked. I didn’t answer, but my look must have said everything, because then she said, “That’s too bad. These dogs need good homes and good people to take care of them.” On my way home, I had an idea to assist shelter pets like Fenway. I wrote a touching story as if Fenway were writing it. I told all about his family and why he had no home, shedding light on (解释) his longing for a loving family. With the shelter director’s approval, I proposed sharing more stories in newspapers and online to attract potential adopters.
The next weekend, the shelter was flooded with families who wanted pets. They were all drawn by the heartfelt stories of animals like Fenway. Fenway’s tail wagged so fast that I was afraid it might fall off. I stood with Fenway as people admired him. His playful nature and hopeful eyes won over many visitors` hearts, leading to a rise in adoptions.

Two tickets.Only two tickets to the big basketball game.
Three pairs of eyes all focused on (关注) the tickets in Dad’s hand. Marcus, the oldest, spoke the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you ”
“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go ” reported Caleb the youngest.
“Dad, can’t you get any more tickets ” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad.
“I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only has two season tickets. He gave them to me.”
But each of us wanted to get the ticket.
“I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it. Let me sleep on it — okay, guys and girls ” he added quickly before Mom and I could correct him.
The next morning, Dad and Mom went shopping early and said we should all get started on our Saturday chores (家务活) as soon as we finished breakfast.
“I’m going for the morning newspaper.” Marcus announced.
“Wait for me!” Caleb added.
The back door snapped shut as the two boys rushed down the driveway. I looked at the breakfast table in front of me. Well, I thought to myself as I pushed my chair away from the table, looks like Saturday morning chores start right here.
A few minutes later, as I was washing offthe kitchen countertops (操作台), I heard the familiar “thump… thump…thump” of the basketball. I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw Marcis practicing his hook shot while Caleb cheered him on.
“You guys, Mom and dad will be back any minute. Remember the chores.” I reminded them as I lifted the lid (盖子) on the garbage container and placed the full plastic bag inside.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

Devon became the man of the house since his father passed away last year, but tonight he was a twelve-year old boy who wanted a puppy for his birthday, and his birthday was tomorrow.
“They say every boy should have a dog of his own, don’t you agree ”
I sighed, knowing what my answer would have to be. “I would love to get you a puppy, but puppies are expensive. They need food and shots and a license. We just can’t afford all that right now, honey.” I lowered my head so he wouldn’t see my tears.
He stood there for a moment. “That’s okay, Mom. I understand,” he whispered. “But some day, when things get better, can we get a puppy ” “Of course, Devon, I promise.” I forced myself to smile.
“When we get a puppy, I am going to name him Rusty.”
“Rusty That’s a fine name.”
The next morning, I gathered our recyclable bottles and cans which were worth five cents each. We drove to the nearby convenience store and sold them at a nearby store. Then we chose the two most delicious donuts with the money.
Devon grabbed the donut and took a huge bite. On the front sidewalk, he stopped so suddenly that I almost ran into him.
A puppy caught his eye. A young woman was parked just outside the door. Her face was wet with tears. The puppy curled up (蜷缩) in her lap with his nose resting on the driver’s door.
Devon rushed over to the car and giggled (咯咯笑) as he fed the rest of his donut to the puppy and was thanked with a wet puppy lick across the face.

A Chair for My Mother
My mother works as a waitress in the Blue Tile Diner. After school sometimes I go to meet her there. Then her boss Josephine gives me a job too. When I finish, Josephine says, “Good work, honey,” and pays me. And every time, I put half of my money into the jar (罐子).
It takes a long time to fill a jar this big. Every day when my mother comes home from work, I take down the jar. My mama empties all her change from tips for me to count. Then we push all of the coins into the jar.
Sometimes my mama is laughing when she comes home from work. Sometimes she’s so tired she falls asleep while I count the money. Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a few. Then she looks worried. But each evening every single shiny coin goes into the jar.
We sit in the kitchen to count the tips. Usually Grandma sits with us too. Often she has money in her old wallet for us. Whenever she gets a good bargain (划算的交易) on tomatoes or bananas or something she buys, she puts by the savings and they go into the jar.
When we can’t get a single other coin into the jar, we are going to take out all the money and go and buy a chair. Yes, a chair. A wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair for Mama and Grandma. When Mama comes home, her feet hurt. “There’s no good place for me to rest my feet,” she says. When Grandma wants to sit back and cut up potatoes, she has to get as comfortable as she can on a hard kitchen chair.
So that is how come Mama brought home the biggest jar she could find and all the coins started to go into the jar.
Paragraph 1:
Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down.

“Howie! You can’t go in! Mom told us to avoid Mrs. Carrigan’s house at all costs! We can’t go in there,” Howie’s big brother, Archie, yelled at the boy who had entered the older woman’s yard upon seeing her Halloween decorations.
The little kid turned and looked at his two big brothers angrily. “But she put up decorations. She wants us to come in,” Howie said, pointing at the pumpkins in the yard and the trick-or-treat sign on her doorway.
“Come out, Howie! Let’s go! I think Mom thinks she’s a ... a witch,” his other big brother, Bobby, whispered the last part. “What Are you afraid of her ” Howie laughed, knowing that his brothers would not like that. He saw their frowns, but his words were true. They were afraid. No one in the neighborhood went into Mrs. Carrigan’s house or even stayed close.
The old woman was strange. She only dressed in black and never brushed her hair. She couldn’t walk straight and never smiled at anyone, so people avoided her the few times she was seen outside. But Howie was not afraid. He was going to knock. The worst that could happen was being ignored or told to go away. Despite his big brothers’ words, he went up the tiny steps and rang the doorbell.
“Howie! Howie! No!” his big brothers whisper-yelled at him from the sidewalk, and Howie turned and put his finger to his mouth, signaling for them to shut up. But he saw their eyes widen and their faces pale even beneath the Halloween makeup they were all wearing. Howie felt something behind him and turned slowly, not knowing what to expect. He felt the cold air; he felt like ringing the bell was not a good idea.
The old woman was there, staring at him surprisedly. He saw her black clothes, and he knew precisely why everyone thought she was a witch. She looked like the ones in cartoons. But Howie squared his shoulders, raised his plastic pumpkin bucket, and said, “Trick or Treat!”

Aminah was sad every day. Her mother had run off with a man she met at her workplace last year. Her father was depressed (沮丧的). He nearly broke down. Many a night he would come back crying out, “Why, why did she leave me ” So depressed was he that he lost himself in wine and Aminah often became the unfortunate victim (受害者) of his anger and depression. While at school, her classmates often made fun of her failing grades.
One day, her patience ran out, and she decided to leave home. “Where ” she wondered. She did not know. All she knew was that she had to get away from it all: a horrible father and school. Packing some necessary items and a few precious personal belongings, she ran away. She would leave her future to the gods.
There was confusion (困惑), uncertainty, and suffering. In her heart, she knew that running away would not solve her problems, but she had to do something. That night she walked aimlessly alone down a street away from her home, feeling a little comfort from the freedom she finally gained and being away from those mean eyes around her.
The night seemed to pass very slowly. Feeling tired and hungry, Aminah laid herself down on a chair at a bus stop beside the street. Curiously enough, staring at the stars twinkling in the sky, Aminah couldn’t help thinking of her father - the heartbroken man and the only breadwinner of the family. “What is the poor man doing now Does my running away secretly result in his deeper sorrow or worry ” she wondered. She was at a loss what to do when a policeman spotted her and asked about her condition.

As a mountain, 1, 642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t very challenging. But its beautiful views of western Massachusetts have attracted hikers into becoming self—satisfied with no attention to its dangerous cliff(悬崖), resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak and was well aware of its danger. So, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up with him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the view; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was looking over the cliff with her husband on the edge of it.
When Grant’s mother caught up, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled out. Grant turned around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She’d fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was affected by trees. Grant told his mother, “I hate to say this, but they may find a body.” Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother went on their way. But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. After telling his mother that he would be safe, he made his way down the mountain alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of searching, Grant saw a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and was in a kneeling position on a small rock. The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Fortunately, she was alive.

It was February 8th. I was correcting students’ homework when I heard a knock at the office door. There stood my husband Michael with a long gold box. The top had a clear, plastic window. Inside were a half-dozen yellow roses, the same as the flowers I had carried in my wedding party.
“Happy first half-anniversary,” Michael said with a huge smile.
I was so surprised that I couldn’t even answer. The flowers were beautiful and went well with the gold box. I stood there in front of my colleagues and some of my students with my heart beating very fast.
The first six month of our marriage had passed by. We taught at the same middle school, so we always had plenty to talk about. We enjoyed doing things together, including travelling, cooking, and going to the theatre. I knew from the beginning that Michael was thoughtful, but these flowers were above and beyond. He was not only thoughtful but so romantic.
Michael and I had met a year and half earlier when we applied for the same teaching job. We hadn’t known there were two teaching positions available when we had the interviews. His interview was first, and mine followed. When we had finished it, we found ourselves seated next to each other in the headmaster’s office.
Smiling shyly at each other, we started chatting. “How did you go ” Michael asked. “Oh, fine,” I replied. “It turns out that there is a typing teacher position open. I told them I would take it if they needed me.” “Do you know how to teach typing ” Though I felt very angry,I answered calmly, “Of course, yes. But do you know how to teach ” Then, there was a period of silence between us.

Once there lived a kind man named Alvin in a small village with his wife. They had a little son. One day, as Alvin was returning home from a nearby village, he came across a baby mongoose (猫鼬) crying next to his mother’s dead body.
“Oh, what a poor creature!” thought Alvin. “If I leave him here, he will surely die.” He picked him up and took him home.
“Gowri, I found this little creature on my way home. Let us take care of him,” Alvin said to his wife. “Very well along with our son, I will take care of the mongoose too,” replied Gowri.
The mongoose grew up with a lot of love and care in their house. He slept next to their son in the cradle (摇篮), drank milk and played with the boy every day. The little mongoose’s days were full of joy. As both the boy and mongoose grew up, their friendship changed to a relationship between two brothers.
The mongoose grew up fast and as days went by, Gowri began to get doubts in her mind. “After all, this is a wild animal. Sooner or later, he will show his true colors,” she thought to herself. She put the mongoose’s bed separately and would watch him carefully whenever he played with her son.
One day when Alvin was away, Gowri decided to go to the river to fetch a pot of water. She looked around and saw her son sleeping soundly in his cradle. The mongoose was also asleep on the floor at the foot of the cradle. “It should take only a few minutes. I hope I can trust that mongoose not to harm my little son,” she said to herself and hurried to the river.
Suddenly, the mongoose woke up with a start. He had heard a very low noise. Looking up, the mongoose saw a large black snake crawling (爬行) in through a hole in the wall.

Ever since she was a little girl, Sally had wanted to skydive from a plane. So, when her 40th birthday arrived, she was surprised and pleased when her children presented her with a gift certificate from the local skydiving center.
“Thanks, kids. You’ve made my dream come true,” she said.
The big day came, and Sally arrived at the skydiving center early in the morning. “First, we’re going to go through some safety information,” the instructor told Sally and the other customers. “Safety is the most important part of skydiving,” the instructor continued. “This parachute is what will keep you alive today.”
After the morning’s training was over, it was finally time to take to the skies. As she’d never skydived before, Sally was paired up with John, an experienced skydiver who worked at the center.
“I’ve done this loads of times before,” he assured her. “We’ll jump from the plane together; we’ll share the same parachute,” John explained. “OK. I trust you,” Sally said with a smile.
After waiting all her life to do this, she was impatient to go up in the plane. Sally and the others walked to the airfield. “We’ll go first,” John told Sally. “Put this earpiece in so I can talk to you through my radio.” As the plane took off, Sally was so excited that she forgot to put the earpiece in. “I’m finally doing this,” she thought to herself, unaware of her mistake.
The plane was soon over 3,000 meters up, and Sally and John were sitting at the plane’s open door, ready to jump. “OK, Sally, let’s do this!” John shouted as he launched the pair of them into the sky. Wind was soon rushing through Sally’s hair as she dropped quickly to the ground.

On a trip to California, my family stopped for lunch. As we walked toward the entrance to the restaurant, a man, with messy beard and dirty hair, jumped up from a bench and opened the door for us. Regardless of his appearance, he greeted us in a friendly way.
Once inside, my daughters whispered, “Mom, he smells.” After we ordered our lunch, I explained , telling the kids to look beyond the dirt. We then watched other customers approach the restaurant but many ignored him. Seeing this rudeness truly upset me. The day I became a mother, I had resolved to set a good example for my children. Yet sometimes when things didn’t go right, being a good example was tough. When our meal arrived, I realized I had left the car-sick pills in the truck. With the windiest trip ahead, the kids needed them, so I excused myself from the meal and went to get them.
Just then, the “doorman” was opening the door for couple. They rushed past him without even acknowledging his presence. Letting them in first, I said a loud “thank you” to him as I exited. He seemed a bit surprised, and then smiled back me, unnoticed, even showing a little shyness and bitterness.
When I returned, we talked a bit, He said he was not allowed inside unless he purchased food. I went back and told my family his story. Then I asked our waitress to add one soup and sandwich. The kids looked puzzled as we had already eaten, but when I said the other was for the “doorman”, they smiled.

1.(22-23高一下·江苏南通·阶段练习)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右.
Three years ago. I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was rush driving to a new and unfamiliar clinic and getting used to the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting, I removed my three things: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from my husband. I wrapped them in a tissue(纸巾) and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break, I noticed the wrinkled tissue and thought that it didn’t look very neat and dropped it into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive and efficient. Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that I was missing my rings. I felt the heart in my body rose, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling in my heart. I spent an hour or so making calls trying to follow the track of my rings. The first people I called was my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic and she informed me that the bins had already been collected.

2.(22-23高一下·江苏南通·阶段练习)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was on a tour of Italy with my friends. Our car pulled to a stop at the beach. I got out, carrying my guitar and saw the blue Adriatic Sea. Waves smashed(撞击) against large rocks that formed a jetty(防波堤). People said this beach was known for its fierce undertow(回流). I trembled. Nothing frightened me as much as water.
I’d always loved water and been a good swimmer until last summer, when I'd decided to climb up to the highest diving board at a city pool. I'd jumped into the water. The next thing I knew was my brother was pulling me out of the pool. From then on, I stayed away from the water.
“Kevin, are you coming " My friend Brad called.
“Yeah,” I said. "Just enjoying the view.” From dry land, I added silently.
Just then I heard shouting. People were running into the sea.
I saw something moving up and down amid the waves. There was a little boy out there! The rescuers were fighting against the tide(潮水). They’d never get to him in time. They might not get to him at all with the undertow.
I looked back at the boy. His head popped up, then a wave crashed over him and he disappeared for a moment. I had to do something.
The jetty! The boy was close to it. From there maybe I could help. I raced down the beach, out onto the jetty, and it hit me: Water! My hands got sweaty and I felt sick to my stomach. I stopped short.
The people in the water weren't making any headway against the waves. I was the only one who saw that going out onto the jetty was the fastest way to reach the drowning boy. Though I was as terrified as he, I tried to remember the life guard training I’d had as a teenager.
Sucking in(吸气) a deep breath, I threw myself into the water. As soon as I went under it, I felt like I was back in that city pool, breathless, struggling. Focus, I shouted in my head. Where is he?

【答案】As I began to replace the lid on the garbage container, then an envelope on the inside of the lid caught my attention. Curious, I reached for it, finding a note from Dad. It read: “To the one who shows true teamwork and responsibility today, the ticket is yours. Remember, it’s not just about basketball, but about being a team player in our family.” My heart raced with excitement and determination as I tucked the note into my pocket, ready to prove myself worthy of the ticket.
By now, Marcus and Caleb had worn themselves out and shuffled back. I looked at them, then at the note in my hand. Without a word, I handed it to Marcus. “You’ve been practicing teamwork all morning, helping each other with the shots. You deserve it,” I said. Marcus grinned, understanding dawning in his eyes. Together, we finished our chores, knowing that even though only one of us would go to the game, we’d all won something more valuable — a stronger bond as a family.

She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.

Then I turned to the woman: “What’s wrong ”

“Really ” Devon took a deep breath and turned to me. I reached forward and touched the soft fur. “Please take him,” she begged. “He is such a friendly and well-behaved dog. The kids named him Rusty, but you can change it if you like.” “Rusty ” Devon whispered. Moments later, Devon buried his face in the soft fur while the puppy slept on his lap during the short ride home. Devon’s birthday wish was granted, as was my prayer to give him the perfect gift. His name was Rusty. How could I say no to that

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down. After supper Mama, Grandma and I stand in front of the jar. “Well, I never would have believed it, but I guess it’s full,” Mama says excitedly. On my mother’s day off, we take all the coins to the bank. The bank exchanges them for ten-dollar bills. Then we take the bus downtown to shop for our chair. We shop through four stores. We try out big chairs and smaller ones, high chairs and low chairs, soft chairs and harder ones.
Paragraph 2:
Finally we find the chair we are all dreaming of. And the money in the jar is enough to pay for it. We set the chair right beside the window. Now Grandma sits in it and talks happily with people going by in the daytime. Mama sits down and watches the news on TV when she comes home from her job. After supper, I sit with her and she can reach right up and turn out the light if I fall asleep in her lap.

Mrs. Carrigan stared at him for a few seconds. He saw her eyes widen a bit with surprise. After a brief silence came her brisk voice, “Come in! My first trick-or-treater!” She reached beside her, taking out a big bag of candy. “Here you go! Pick whatever you like! By the way, I like your costume,” she said, giving Howie a cute wink and it was not scary as he had expected. Howie’s eyes sparkled with joy as he picked his favorites. She looked behind him and saw his big brothers. “Don’t they want any candies ” she asked.
“Guys! Come here! There are lots of candies!” Howie shouted at the top of his lungs, waving his hands. His big brothers exchanged a confused look, but still, they dashed to the door way, grabbing whatever Mrs. Carrigan was offering. Thrilled and overjoyed, they shared everyone their experience in the neighborhood. Soon, the porch of Mrs. Carrigan’s house was packed solid with kids ringing her doorbell for candies. Having taken a handful of candy, each kid left with a bright smile broadening from ear to ear. The rumors about Mrs. Carrigan disappeared that Halloween night and people realized she was just a friendly neighbor like everyone else.

Afraid that she might fall off, Grant crawled on all fours up a tight, narrow path until he reached Paula.
Staying with Paula, he found she was bleeding. Her head, arms, and legs were bleeding. Securing himself against a tree, Grant gently put her hand in his and tried to keep her mind off the pain by asking her with questions. Soon, they were joined by other hikers. About 45 minutes later, rescuers arrived. To reach them, a rescuer went down the ladder and secured Paula to a waiting ambulance. Eventually, Paula and her husband were sent to a hospital. They were nearly out of sight when Grant realized again inviting as the views were, people should respect them.

Then I found that the two of us shared many similar hobbies and always had a lot to talk, which led us to fall in love with each other in the process of getting along. One year later, we got married.
Michael was a great husband who always remembered my words. One day when we had a talk, I mentioned our wedding by accident, “Honey, do you still remember the scene and the beautiful flower ” “Yes, of course. It is beautiful!” I didn’t expect that he had kept my words in mind and done such a surprise for me on our half-anniversary. It never occurred to me that he did romantic things for me. I was extremely grateful to him for what he had done for me. His thoughtful and romantic behavior made me realize that he was such a good husband that deserved I cherish and love forever.

“The snake will harm my brother. Mother and Father are away. I will have to protect my little brother,” thought the mongoose, as the snake came crawling towards the cradle.

“Oh, my parachute won’t open,” John said into his radio. “You’ll have to open yours,” he added, but there was no reply. “Sally. SALLY ” he shouted, his voice full of fear.

【答案】Para. 1
When it was time to continue our trip, I noticed the “ doorman” enjoying his meal. Upon seeing me, he stood up and thanked me heartily. He then extended his hand for a handshake and I gratefully accepted. I suddenly noticed the tears in his eyes—tears of gratitude. What happened next drew great astonishment: I gave the “doorman” a hug. But he pulled away, with tears streaming down his face.
Para. 2
Back in truck, I turned to my kids. It seemed that kids learnt a lot from what had happened just now. They were lost in thought deeply. While we can’t choose many things in life, we can choose when to show gratitude. I said thanks to a man who had simply held open a door for me, and also said thanks for that opportunity to teach my children by example. Being thankful for the unfortunate ones, we can bring warmth to them; showing smiles to the helpful ones, we can spread the kindness to more people in need.

“The car belongs to this gentleman. One day, I will give you a car too.” The boy said to his brother. Jack stood there, stunned. It dawned on him that he was totally wrong.“Could you please take us for a drive together My younger brother loves cars very much.” The boy said. Without any hesitation, Jack agreed.
Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. Although they followed a normal route, the little boy was in high spirits as if he found himself in heaven. But to his surprise, the boy didn’t enjoy the view. He only focused attention on his brother.
He got out and ran up to the steps.( 他下了车,跑上台阶。) Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car.( 杰克下了车,把男孩抱到汽车的前座上。)
1.高级词汇:belong to; dawn on sb. ; without any hesitation; be in high spirits; to one’s surprise; focus on
2.复合句式:
It’s clear that the younger boy was his brother, who was unable to walk. (who引导非限制性定语从句)
As his brother saw the car,his eyes were shining.(as引导的时间状语从句)
Although they followed a normal route, the little boy was in high spirits as if he found himself in heaven.(although引导让步状语从句)
Deeply moved, Jack realized the best Christmas present was the concern from the bottom of the brother’s heart rather than a car.(deeply moved 为过去分词作状语)
