【2024 新课标Ⅰ卷】“I am not crazy,” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸)
on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers
occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but
growing number of American veterinarians (兽 医 ) now practicing “holistic” medicine-combining traditional
Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became
interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing
drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he
improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So,
after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she
was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to
keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more
easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication,
he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from
30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal.
That’s my job.”
24. What do some of Farber’s coworkers think of him
A. He’s odd. B. He’s strict. C. He’s brave. D. He’s rude.
25. Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets
A. He was trained in it at university. B. He was inspired by another veterinarian.
C. He benefited from it as a patient. D. He wanted to save money for pet owners.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B. The complexity of veterinarians’ work.
C. Examples of rare animal diseases. D. The effectiveness of holistic medicine.
2 / 34
27. Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
A. To prove Farber’s point. B. To emphasize its importance.
C. To praise veterinarians. D. To advocate animal protection.
A 25. C 26. D 27. A
If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers
故选 A。
Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he
improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So,
after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.(然后,他尝试了针灸,这是一
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart
attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so
much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse,
Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.(利·廷代尔的狗查理患有
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time,
3 / 34
and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary
Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700.
故选 A。
5W(what, who, when, where, why)要素。
My mother, who wasn’t good at
driving and using technology, planned to drive for Uber, an online platform that provides ride-hailing (打 车 )
services.
4 / 34
One day on her way home from grocery shopping, she turned on the app, which matched her quickly with a
rider named Matthew. As she made her way toward him, the panic seized her — the silent navigation (导航), the
distracting screen and the swipe/ tap confusion. It was just too much. Naturally, she turned off her phone. She did
not cancel the ride, nor did she contact him to explain. She turned her car and raced toward home.
A few minutes later, Mom turned on her phone to check her text messages. She had several missed calls
from Matthew, who had been watching her on his screen and had seen her drive in the opposite direction for the
past five minutes.
Matthew called again. She hesitated, and then picked up the phone. “Why are you driving in the opposite
direction ” he asked. “Listen,” she explained. “This is my first time with Uber, and I don’t know how to use it.”
Then Mom found the destination and Matthew got in the car. Matthew was a handsome man in his early
thirties with a kind face. Mom told Matthew he would need to manage the technology if he wanted to arrive on time.
“So, start the trip,” she requested and tossed her phone to Matthew. He was glad of service. They laughed,
talked and eventually arrived at Yorkdale — although at the wrong entrance.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s OK,” laughed Matthew. “Everyone is a beginner at some point.” He ended the
trip, returned her phone and started to climb out of the car.
“Matthew,” she called from her window, “you’d better not rate me one star.” “I’m rating you five right now!”
he said and he really did.
Matthew disappeared into the mall, smiling. She smiled, too, proud that her first ride was such a success.
24.Why did the author’s mother turn off her phone
A.She was at a loss what to do then.
B.She had difficulty in finding Matthew.
C.She couldn’t get in touch with Matthew.
D.She had something urgent to deal with.
25.What did Matthew do before he met the author’s mother
A.He canceled the order. B.He followed her car home.
C.He issued a warning. D.He phoned her several times.
26.What can we learn about the author’s mother and Mattew’s trip
A.It took shorter than usual. B.It led to a lasting friendship.
C.They had a great time during it. D.They didn’t get along well during it.
5 / 34
27.Which of the following words can best describe Matthew
A.Humorous. B.Understanding. C.Intelligent. D.Responsible.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.B
As she made her way toward him, the panic seized her — the silent navigation,
the distracting screen and the swipe/tap confusion. It was just too much. Naturally, she turned off her phone.
故选 A 项。
A few minutes later, Mom turned on her phone to check her text messages. She had
several missed calls from Matthew, who had been watching her on his screen and had seen her drive in the opposite
direction for the past five minutes.
They laughed, talked and eventually arrived at Yorkdale —— although at the
into the mall, smiling. She smiled, too, proud that her first ride was such a success.
根据倒数第三段马修说的“Everyone is a beginner at some point. (每个人在某个时候都是初
学者)”和最后一段他对作者母亲的评价“I’m rating you five right now!
所以最能描述马修的词语是“Understanding(善解人意的)”。

In the bustling city of
Shanghai, a unique café is set to open its doors. Unlike any other, this café operates in complete darkness, offering
a sensory experience like no other. It is staffed by baristas who are visually impaired, with a mission to raise
awareness about the challenges they face and the strength they possess.
Upon entering, customers are greeted with walking sticks to navigate the dark interior. For the next few

Passage(2)
Life had always been about action for
former teacher Billy Keenan, who had served in the Army before. He mastered musical instruments including the
flute, guitar, bass guitar and piano. As a competitive triathlete and surfer, he completed numerous 5K, 10K and
half-marathon runs. “I was at the peak of my powers,” he said.
But on Sept. 14, 2013, his life changed in an instant while surfing at the Jersey Shore. “I rode that wave, fell
off my board, hit my head on the ocean floor,” Keenan said. “Everything faded to black.” Keenan woke up in a
hospital room two and a half weeks later. He had been paralyzed (瘫 痪 的 ) from the shoulders down and the
medical team didn’t expect him to regain independent breathing.
Keenan called it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was “a lot of darkness.” When a parent of a
former student visited him at the hospital, they handed him the phone. It was New York Police Department
Detective Steven McDonald, who survived a shooting in 1986. He eventually forgave his attacker. But he too was
paralyzed. He became a public speaker, preaching the importance of forgiveness.
That day, he had advice for Keenan. At a recent talk at Berkeley College, Keenan recalled what McDonald
had told him. “The only reason you survive is when you’re better, when you’re stronger, when your rehab is over,
you’re going to come back and contribute in a significant way,” he said. “Don’t ever forget that in the end, there
will be life.”
9 / 34
Looking back on his life, Keenan realized he had been accustomed to what he called “deliberate discomfort.”
Drawing on his own faith and that reminder from McDonald, Keenan overcame the odds. Four months after his
accident, he was able to breathe on his own again.
In 2015, Keenan went back to teaching, but later retired. When McDonald died in January 2017, Keenan
decided to start helping others by becoming a motivational speaker. He published an autobiography in 2023 —
“The Road to Resilience: The Billy Keenan Story” — and is already working on his next book, a new
coming-of-age story called “I Am Iron Man.”
4.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To introduce Keenan’s basic situations before injury.
B.To make a contrast to indicate Keenan’s later terrible situation.
C.To inform the readers that Keenan stood out with talent and skill.
D.To indicate why Keenan was eventually injured.
5.What do we know about Keenan after his injury
A.He was paralyzed all over his body.
B.He came back to consciousness after three weeks.
C.He was expected to breathe independently soon by his medical team.
D.He had used to accept paralysis and sufferings to be his fate.
6.What does the underlined word “rehab” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Regret. B.Reflection.
C.Recovery. D.Rescue.
7.What message is mainly conveyed by Keenan’s story
A.Life is never easy for those who dream.
B.What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
C.Helping others is the way we help ourselves.
D.Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.
Life had always been about action for former teacher Billy Keenan, who had
served in the Army before. He mastered musical instruments including the flute, guitar, bass guitar and piano. As a
competitive triathlete and surfer, he completed numerous 5K, 10K and half-marathon runs. “I was at the peak of my
powers,” he said.
it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was “a lot of darkness.”(基南称这是他生命中最糟糕的日子之一,他
Looking back on his life, Keenan realized he had been accustomed to
what he called “deliberate discomfort.””(Keenan 沉浸在他自称的“deliberate discomfort”)可知,那就是 Keenan
The only reason you survive is when you’re better, when you’re stronger, when
your … is over, you’re going to come back and contribute in a significant way
Life had always been about action for former teacher Billy Keenan, who had
served in the Army before. He mastered musical instruments including the flute, guitar, bass guitar and piano. As a
competitive triathlete and surfer, he completed numerous 5K, 10K and half-marathon runs. “I was at the peak of my
powers,” he said.
But on Sept.
14, 2013, his life changed in an instant while surfing at the Jersey Shore.(但是在 2013 年 9 月 14 日,当他正在泽

Passage(3)
In rural North Carolina, a research farm
grows new blueberry varieties for gardeners and farmers alike. And the berries — well, they have to be harvested.
In the morning about 30 volunteers gathered near a blueberry field to listen to researcher Bill Cline, who
offered the best technique for gathering the fruit. “Attach the bucket so that you have both hands free to pick. Just
cup your hands, roll them off with your thumbs and down into the bucket,” he instructed.
This research farm is part of North Carolina State University, and the fruit isn’t sold. It’s donated, and these
volunteers are here to help. “And you might get to take a blueberry or two home at the end of the deal, and we
really appreciate your being out here,” Cline told the volunteers.
Bonzak is one of a group of volunteer gardeners today. To them, the research farm provides a unique
opportunity to learn. As the buckets are filled with blueberries, Cline brings out more boxes to transport the berries
to the food bank.
“They are the largest blueberries I’ve ever seen,” Bonzak said. Cline explained that this variety is called
Pinnacle and can grow to the size of a quarter. “It is not widely planted. It’s not a real high yielder (高产品种), but
what it does have is exceptional flavor and size,” he said.
On this 50-acre farm, there are thousands of bushes of different varieties being tested at any time. Cline says
it’s a big effort to find a new variety with the ideal characteristics of climate adaptability, disease resistance, yield,
and flavor. “It takes a lot of time and patience to develop,” he noted.
“Thanks to the help of these volunteers, the blueberries were harvested and transported to food banks,
enriching the tables and diets of low-income families in the local community. These volunteers not only harvest the
fruit but also serve as a bridge, connecting the research outcomes of local farms with the dining tables of local
residents, ensuring that the fruits of scientific progress are shared with those who need them most,” he added.
4.What was Bill Cline doing in Paragraph 2
A.Tasting the new blueberry variety. B.Teaching volunteers on harvesting.
C.Selling blueberries to the customers. D.Studying techniques for growing blueberries.
5.What do we know about the Pinnacle blueberry variety
A.It has a high yield. B.It is widely grown.
C.It has a unique taste. D.It is resistant to disease.
6.How does the research farm benefit the local community
12 / 34
A.It provides poor families with nutritious food.
B.It attracts visitors and tourists to the local area.
C.It enables residents to learn gardening techniques.

Passage(4)
Last year, my husband and I decided to
make our 12-storey building more of a community. We live in a small rented apartment in Park Merced, a large
housing development. I would call us lower-middle-class. A lot of nurses, bus drivers, and tradesmen live here,
many of them 1st or 2nd generation immigrants (移民).
We’re all renters. Renters come and go and tend not to see the buildings they live in as their home. But it can
be done. We started with a monthly two-hour social in the building lobby on the second Fridays of each month.
Some people came, between 15-30 each time. The events lasted two hours, but there wasn’t much to do besides
talking, eating snacks and drinking juice. The socials were nice, but most residents gave them a miss.
Then one day I was on the nearby campus of San Francisco State University. A young man from a social
club for students had a big sign about “Building Community”. I asked him, “How do you do that ” He said they
tried to get people to share something about themselves with at least one other person. That made a lot of sense to
me.
I bought a large world map. At the social, I taped it on the lobby wall with signs that said “Where We’re
From. Put a green sticker where you were born and yellow stickers where your grandparents were born.” People put
up their stickers and looked where other people came from. We left the map up overnight, and the next day,
Saturday, more people played. I planned to leave the map and stickers up for a month or more. They certainly made
the lobby more interesting than the housing project look it usually has.
I see that there will be challenges, but I also know that a strong community will help us live good lives. I
have the time and energy to do this work.

Every winter season, I feel a rush of
emotions and memories flood back as I look at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf,
frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color, but to me, it held a world of meaning.
My mother was a hardworking woman. She would wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast for
the family, then rush off to her job at the local factory. Despite the long hours and tiring work, she always managed
to come home with a smile on her face, ready to listen to our stories and help us with our homework. I remember
how she would wrap that scarf around her neck on cold mornings, as if it were a shield against the harsh elements.
One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I spent hours in the store,
carefully choosing one that I thought would match her eyes and bring out the warmth in her smile. When I finally
presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars. She immediately put it on and proudly showed it off to my father and
siblings, as if it were the most precious gift she had ever received. But even though she had the new scarf, she still
kept the old one, saying that it held too many memories to let go.
As the years passed, the scarf became a symbol of our bond. Whenever I saw it, I would think of the
countless times my mother had comforted me with a hug when I was sad, or cheered me on when I was facing a
challenge. She was my constant support, my rock in the stormy sea of life. Friends would come and go, but my
mother was always there, ready to offer a kind word or a shoulder to cry on.
Now, I am a father with two kids. Whenever the winter winds blow, I take out that old scarf and hold it close
to my heart. It reminds me of my mother's love, unwavering and unconditional. And I realize that the best gifts in
life are not the ones that are bought with money, but the ones that are wrapped in love and memories. Just like my
mother's scarf, which may be worn out and old, but to me, it is a treasure that I will cherish forever.
4.How did the author surprise his mom at Christmas
A.By saving his pocket money. B.By helping with household chores.
C.By taking her on a trip. D.By giving her a new scarf.
5.What does the underlined word “frayed” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Torn. B.Decorated. C.Colorful. D.Soft.
6.What can we infer about the author's mother
A.She lives an economical life. B.She values family and memories.
C.She doesn't like new things. D.She is strict with her children.
7.What is the main idea of the passage
16 / 34
A.The author's happy childhood.
B.The author's memories of his mother's scarf.
C.The relationship between the author and his mother.
D.The importance of buying proper gifts for parents.
【答案】4.D 5.A 6.B 7.B
One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I

smile. When I finally presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars.(有一年圣诞节,我决定攒零花钱给她买一条新

at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf, frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color.(
故选 A。
But even though she had the new scarf, she still kept the old one, saying that
it held too many memories to let go.(但是,即使她有了新的围巾,她仍然保留了旧的,因为她说它承载了太多

Tait’s journey to being a baking kid began
back in2018 when, aged 14, she was struck down by mental illness. With medication and therapy(疗法), and under
the guidance of parents, Tait began exploring activities that might help her find a path through the daily anxiety
attacks and depression. Gardening, drawing, knitting were among the things she tried. But nothing quite seemed to
last long enough or give her a sense of hope or delight.
A turning point came when his father Alex clipped a simple bread recipe from a magazine. When he read it,
Tait felt excited and got stuck in. The effect was nothing short of magic.
“Baking filled my time and put me in a really calm state, but it also gave me a huge sense of purpose when
all I really felt like was a burden,” she says.
Tait’s newfound zeal rapidly capped her family’s appetite for bread, so she began gifting her bread to lucky
locals in her home town. Word quickly spread and the free bread turned into a paid-for subscription service. Alex
quit his job as a tutor to become his daughter’s business partner, and after opening several successful pop-up stores
(快闪店), the pair drew on their global social media following to crowd fund a brick-and-mortar store in 2019.
It was an instant success, selling out daily and she wrote a book. However, ensuring long-term viability(生

of 5 am starts and 12- hour days, they shut up shop last summer.
Tait has since scaled back to basics, selling her bakes at twice-weekly pop-up store. She runs the Orange
Bakery from a Watlington’s abandoned factory, which is also the center for Breaducating Britain. So far they have
distributed around 40,000 free bread kits through more than 200 different organisations to schools, prisons and
individuals.

Passage(1)
When was the last time you used a telephone box I mean to make an actual phone call
— not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was…
2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress
some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to
make it seem a bit more ”young professional”.
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly I was locked
outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory
Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time
to get back in before the actors arrived.
24 / 34
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that then are no longer any public
telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turn into a “mini community library”: any passer-by
can “borrow” a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the “library” opened, I didn’t bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be
stuffed full of cheese love stories. Then I noticed fork conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous
books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to
experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great
books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly no longer be able to connect
me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house,
observing how nature solved problems. A ditry stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through
plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could
be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking
questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌) Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing
chemicals With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way
26 / 34
nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he
constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and
streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these
different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the
sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to
eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage
(污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a
city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for
the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these
new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
4. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs
A. He was fond of traveling. B. He enjoyed being alone.
C. He had an inquiring mind. D. He longed to be a doctor.
5. Why did John put the sludge into the tanks
A. To feed the animals. B. To build an ecosystem.
C. To protect the plants. D. To test the eco-machine.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou
A. To review John’s research plans. B. To show an application of John’s idea.
C. To compare John’s different jobs. D. To erase doubts about John’s invention.
7. What is the basis for John’s work
A. Nature can repair itself. B. Organisms need water to survive.
C. Life on Earth is diverse. D. Most tiny creatures live in groups.

Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for
middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts,
a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills,
environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food
restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of
soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though
some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.

2 / 20
27. Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
A. To prove Farber’s point. B. To emphasize its importance.
C. To praise veterinarians. D. To advocate animal protection.
5W(what, who, when, where, why)要素。

Keenan called it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was “a lot of darkness.” When a parent of a
6 / 20
former student visited him at the hospital, they handed him the phone.

Drawing on his own faith and that reminder from McDonald, Keenan overcame the odds. Four months after his
accident, he was able to breathe on his own again.
In 2015, Keenan went back to teaching, but later retired. When McDonald died in January 2017, Keenan

Whenever I saw it, I would think of the
countless times my mother had comforted me with a hug when I was sad, or cheered me on when I was facing a
10 / 20
challenge. She was my constant support, my rock in the stormy sea of life. Friends would come and go, but my
mother was always there, ready to offer a kind word or a shoulder to cry on.

存能力) would have meant scaling up in a way that neither father nor daughter liked. So instead, after four years
of 5 am starts and 12- hour days, they shut up shop last summer.
Tait has since scaled back to basics, selling her bakes at twice-weekly pop-up store. She runs the Orange

— not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was…
2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house,
observing how nature solved problems. A ditry stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through
plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could
be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking
questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌) Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing
chemicals With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way

(污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a
city in southeast China.

Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as
17 / 20
soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a
year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say
they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that
they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming

she says, “and they feel successful.”

Passage(4)
Living in Iowa and trying to become a photographer specializing in landscape (风景)
can be quite a challenge, mainly because the corn state lacks geographical variation.
Although landscapes in the Midwest tend to be quite similar, either farm fields or highways, sometimes I find
distinctive character in the hills or lakes. To make some of my landscape shots, I have traveled up to four hours
away to shoot within a 10-minute time frame. I tend to travel with a few of my friends to state parks or to the
countryside to go on adventures and take photos along the way.
Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style of photography. I often leave early to seek the
right destinations so I can set up early to avoid missing the moment I am attempting to photograph. I have missed
18 / 20
plenty of beautiful sunsets/sunrises due to being on the spot only five minutes before the best moment.
One time my friends and I drove three hours to Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, to climb the purple quartz (石英)
rock around the lake. After we found a crazy-looking road that hung over a bunch of rocks, we decided to
photograph the scene at sunset. The position enabled us to look over the lake with the sunset in the background. We
managed to leave this spot to climb higher because of the spare time until sunset. However, we did not mark the
route (路线) so we ended up almost missing the sunset entirely. Once we found the place, it was stressful getting
lights and cameras set up in the limited time. Still, looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots
though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.
4. How does the author deal with the challenge as a landscape photographer in the Midwest
