Iceland: a Land of Many Possibilities
We invite you to visit our site and learn about this wonderful country. But first, we'd like to introduce you to some of the basic facts and travel possibilities in Iceland. Whether you're planning to stay a month or drop in on your way to Europe, what you learn might surprise you. The first thing you should know about Iceland is that it is nowhere near as cold as its name implies. The average January day in Reykjavik is about the same temperature as it is in New York City. This means that a winter trip is just as practical as a summer visit, and the costs are much lower. Why the old Norsemen who first came here gave such an icy name to a such a green country is a mystery, but it is said that the first Viking to discover the island wanted to keep it all to himself, so he named the green country "Iceland" and the icy country "Greenland", hoping that future settlers would head further north.
Obviously, his plan didn't quite work out, but even today Iceland is still one of the least populated nations on Earth The electric green landscape is full of wide open spaces and geological wonders: plenty of carved mountains, steaming hot springs, beautiful glaciers, heavenly waterfalls and active volcanoes. And because of the island's endless supply of energy from deep inside the Earth, there is no pollution.
Many people have heard of Iceland's natural beauty, but one of the island's best-kept secrets is its cultural life. Reykjavik has become one of Europe's hottest nightclubs, and the art scene is alive as well.

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the "Step" pyramid and the "Bent" pyramid.
Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever.
The "Step" pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun set. This was for level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to break under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital, or better still near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.
110. The most important reason why some pyramids remain in good condition is that .
A. people have taken good care of them
B. it doesn't rain often in Egypt
C. they were well designed

D. it was not easy to choose a suitable place for the pyramids
113. The last paragraph of the passage mainly tells us .
A. it was easy for the king to check
B. water transport was easier than land transport
C. there was a rock base for the "Step" pyramid to be built on
D. why the "Step" pyramid had to be built on the west side of the Nile

A team of British scientists is preparing to create a digital model of Mount Rushmore using laser scanning (激光扫描) so that the iconic(图标的) U.S. monument(历史遗迹) can be recreated if it is damaged.
The survey work is part of a project to record the exact size of 500 of the most famous world heritage sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the Great Wall of China.
The joint team, from the Glasgow School of Art and Historic Scotland, are now surveying 10 world heritage sites in Britain before they aim their laser beams at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. There they will team up with members of the CyArk Foundation, an organization that has identified several “at risk” world heritage sites. Mount Rushmore is on their list.
Laser scanning itself is not new but applying the technology to historic sites or buildings is a new way. Chris McGregor of Historic Scotland told Reuters Television. “They hadn't really thought about the built heritage as being a market for such a machine but its use and the work that we are doing with it is really innovative(创新的) and really exciting.”
CyArk's goal is to create a huge database of detailed surveys of sites so that they can be maintained or even rebuilt if they are damaged by a natural disaster, climate change or even war.
Doug Pritchard from the Glasgow School of Art's Digital Design Studio said, “We are discovering new things about the buildings which are hundreds, thousands of years old.”
CyArk said the loss of architectural and archaeological(考古学的) cultural heritage is becoming a crisis of global proportions with an urgent need for reliable documentation as a key step to help protect heritage sites. The development of laser scanning technology has given a greater accuracy to surveys and thrown new light on ancient monuments.

M: Yes, you can take these pills three times a day, and I' d like you to come back and see me here three days from now.
W: Thank you very much. If it' s still painful then, I think I' d like you to pull it.

W: What' s up You look a bit down.
M: I got the results this morning for my final exams. I failed one.
W: Oh, no. What happened I thought you worked really hard and went over everything carefully. And you' re always so careful in the exams.
M: I am. But the questions were just too hard this time.
W: Can you take it again
M: Yeah, but only after I take the course again next year.
W: What You have to repeat the whole course
M: Yes, that' s quite normal, isn' t it
W: Not in my country. If we fail an exam at university, we usually get a chance to take it again before long, but we don' t have to do the whole course again.
M: Well, here you have to repeat the whole course. And pay for it too, of course.

M: I think he is. What do you want to know about him
W: Well, how old is he, thirty or thirty-five
M: He' s actually around forty now, six years older than me, if you can believe it. But he looks pretty young, doesn' t he
W: Yeah, he really does. Does he have a family
M: No, no kids. He never married.
W: Really A guy like that never married Then what does he do Is he in business
M: No, he' s just a teacher at a good university. He' s a very generous guy - he gives a lot of money to charity - and he loves to travel, so he also spends a lot of money on trips.
W: Oh, he sounds just like me - I like traveling too. I used to dream of taking a round-the-world trip and visiting all the famous spots around the world.

Hong Kong Disneyland is located in Penny' s Bay, on the northeast end of Lantau Island. It is owned and managed by the Hong Kong International Theme Parks. The park opened to visitors on 12 September, 2005. In 2006, it ranked among the top five most popular places to visit in Hong Kong, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board's annual Statistical Review. Disney attempted to avoid problems of cultural conflict by attempting to include Chinese culture, customs, and traditions when designing and building the resort, including sticking to the rules of fengshui. For instance, a bend was put in a walkway near the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort entrance so good energy wouldn' t flow into the South China Sea.
The park consists of six themed areas: Main Street, USA,
Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch and Toy Story Land. The theme park' s service members speak Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Guide maps are printed in traditional and simplified Chinese as well as in English, French, and Japanese. Hong Kong Disneyland currently occupies 55 acres; it will be expanded to 68 acres when three new themed areas are completed. After the expansion, the park is expected to handle 9 million visitors annually.

M: Hi, Barbara. You look terrible! What' s the matter
W: It' s my examination. I' m so afraid I failed.
M: Don' t worry so much. You know there' s nothing we can do now - just keep calm and wait for the examination results to come out. You never know - maybe you will get the highest marks in our class.
W: Thank you - that' s so nice of you to say.
M: You know, we have been working hard the whole school year. Don't you think we should do something nice for the holiday
W: Absolutely. Any suggestions
M: I' ve been thinking of planning a trip. Would you like to join me
W: I' d love to!
M: Great! What about going to Mount Tai The sunrise from the top of Mount Tai is a spectacular sight.
W: Oh, that would be great. You know, I' ve often dreamed of standing on the top of Mount Tai and watching the sun rising up out of the sea. I would be so excited if my dream could come true.
M: OK, then that' s settled! What day would you like to start out
W: I' ll be free three days from now. What about you
M: Anytime is OK for me.
W: OK, then let' s plan to leave in three days. I guess we should probably prepare flashlights, tents and some money for this trip, right We should also check online to see if there' s any information about traveling safely in that area.
