Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. "Football, tennis, cricket—anything with a round ball, I was useless," he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man's cold-water exploits(成就). Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.
Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. "John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say, 'You are completely crazy,'" Saunders says.
In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a closer encounter(遭遇) with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.
This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.

Six Americans are working on a new highway. But this highway won't have any traffic. It's an "ice highway" to the South Pole.
The team has just finished a second year of work on the 1,020-mile highway. "The road is the greatest single footprint of activity we've seen in the Antarctic," said Alan Hemmings, an Australian environmentalist.
The highway will provide a new way for supplies to be pulled across the earth on sleds(雪橇). This method will use a lot less fuel than an aircraft, the current way that scientists and supplies reach the AmundsenScott Base, a US research station in the South Pole. The highway will also allow for equipment that is too big for planes to carry to Antarctica. Even with these benefits, there is one disadvantage—a round trip on the road will be at least 30 days compared to a few hours by plane.
Making this 20-foot-wide road isn't easy, and it takes a lot of time.
The crew(工作队) has been working on the road for two summers, when it's warmer and easier to work with the ice. It probably won't be completed until next year.
Crevasses, in the land often make the construction difficult. Crevasses are kind of pot holes that form when surface ice is stretched. This can be very dangerous, especially when the crevasses are hidden under a layer of snow and can't be seen.
"Last year it took us three months to go three miles across a crevasse field, full of dangerous, hidden crevasses," said the project's manager, John Wright. Each year, more crevasses appear and they have to be filled with snow and ice so the road is safe for travel. The road will also be lined with green flags so travellers know where the safe surface is.
106. How many years will it probably take to complete the ice highway
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.
107. When it is finished, the highway will NOT be used for .

SeaWorld Orlando has a new attraction. It exhibits nearly 250 penguins. During my visit to SeaWorld Orlando, I talked with a bird expert, Anita.
TFK: Why did SeaWorld want to make an exhibit about penguins
ANITA: We've had penguins since 1987. But we wanted to build a great new exhibit where the guests can see the penguins up close and hear them. In the old exhibit you were separated by glass, so you couldn't really hear them. So this is a whole new experience.
TFK: How are the penguins cared for
ANITA: We go and mainly observe them with our eyes and our ears. If one's sleeping more than normally or seems squinty-eyed(斜视眼), we might have a vet check on them. We also feed them every day with restaurant-quality fish. We feed them in the water so that they're feeding naturally.
TFK: In their lifetime, what trouble does the penguin have
ANITA: In their lifetime, penguins face predators(食肉动物), which they don't have here at SeaWorld. There are large ocean birds that would feed on the eggs or the chicks of penguins, as well as whales and sea lions.
TFK: The ice in Antarctica is rapidly melting. What effect does this have on penguins
ANITA: As the water warms up, the fish that normally live in that cold water don't survive, or they move on, but the penguins really want that cold. So as global warming heats up, they really have no place to go since that's the coldest place on Earth.
TFK: How is SeaWorld helping to increase awareness(意识) about climate change
ANITA: Just be aware of your environment around you. Especially in the ocean, any animal can eat the plastic in the environment. It makes them sick and some of them die from it because they can't digest it. So just getting up on the beach, just cleaning the environment up, and just paying attention to what's happening around you.
111. SeaWorld Orlando's new exhibition of penguins differs from the old one in .
A. the purpose B. the lasting time
C. the exhibiting method D. the number of visitors

A. seldom get sick

The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate(气候)into a new ice age, may never occur, according to new research.
The next ice age could be 15,000 years away, say European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740,000 years of climate date(数据)obtained from the Antarctic ice.
Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3,000-meter depth of ice high in the Antarctic mainland. They figure out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to, has at least 900,000 years of snowfalls, kept as neatly as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer(层)have begun to answer questions about the climates in the past.
The results show that there have been eight ice ages in the past 740,000 years and eight warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with those of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15,000 years.
Research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)levels are the highest for at least 440,000 years.
“ If people say to you: the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise, our date say no, a new ice age is not hanging over our heads, ” said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey. “ Now we have eight examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages… and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future. ”
Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record, so did carbon dioxide level. “ In 440,000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today, ” said Dr Wolff.
114. In drilling through the ice in Antarctica , scientists have found that .
A. the lowest temperature there is
B. the depth of ice is 3,000 meters
C. the ice has existed for 15,000 years

Air travel has three advantage over train travel. First, it can save much time. We can fly from one place to other in a long time, but by train we have to spend more time. Second, air travel is more comfortable because the plane flies so smooth that we can have a good rest during the trip. Third, the train is crowding sometimes and passengers have to sit for a long time, what makes them tired. But train travel also has it's own advantages. For an example, traveling by train cost only a little money. Besides this, we can enjoy the view out the train's windows.

W: OK, Jack. Well, it's to the Science Museum.
M: Great! What will we see there
W: We're going to a special exhibition about birds. But there are lots of other things to see too—about the weather, for example, and the sky at night.
M: Cool! How much is it
W: The ticket for the exhibition is only three pounds, but we have to pay twelve pounds each to include lunch and the bus.
M: I see. Thanks.
(Text 8)
M: Molly, come and get your dinner. I cooked your favorite.
W: Thanks, dad. It's Sunday today, and I'm going on the plane to Aunt Diane's city on Wednesday. Shall I pack my bags on Tuesday
M: Yes, that's fine, Molly.
W: Who's meeting me at the airport
M: Well, Aunt Diane and Uncle Matt will be at work, but your cousin David can meet you.
W: Good! What clothes will I need I know it's hot there now.
M: Yes, but it rains a lot. You can borrow an umbrella or a jacket if it's wet. Just pack your dresses.
W: OK. What will we do while I'm there
M: Well, I know Diane wants to show you the forest. You saw the mountains and the beaches last year, with me and mum.
(Text 9)
M: I found a very interesting article yesterday, Monica.
W: Oh I thought you were in the library studying maths!
M: I was, but after that I went to the dentist. I found it while I was sitting in the waiting room.
W: What was it about
M: Canadian bears, and how they catch fish in the rivers. There were some amazing pictures! You know, they can run as fast as horses. And the man who wrote the article was also interesting. He used to teach English but he didn't like his job. He was really interested in wildlife so he went back to college and now he studies bears.
W: My dad would love to read that article.
M: I showed it to my brother but he didn't like it.
W: Why not Doesn't he like animals
M: It's not that. He thought the article was too long! But it wasn't! And it was actually very funny. I liked it, anyway.
(Text 10)
M: I attended a primary school in a quiet village where I lived when I was five and I stayed there until 11, when I moved to the secondary school where I am now. My secondary school is for students of all abilities, and we're put into different groups according to certain subjects like maths and languages. I'm much better at numbers than words, so I'm in the highest group for maths, but not for languages. I'm in the second set for those and I study Spanish and German.
Moving to secondary school was quite hard for me because it meant catching the school bus instead of walking, but I'm used to it now. And the school is very big—There are over 1,000 pupils. There are playing fields at the back where we can do sport, and a proper restaurant. And there are science laboratories, quite a big library and a swimming pool. My life's very busy now. I get homework every night, and I play in the school band and the baseball team.
