Nail art has become an international phenomenon and many are using their fingernails to display creativity and personality. Social networks are overflowing with people showing off their latest and at times, impossibly complicated designs. The important question is where did it all begin and how has the color of your fingernails become just as, if not more important than the outfit you are wearing
The history of nail polish and nail art dates back to 3000 BC in China, India and Egypt. Plants were processed to create a dye that was used as a type of nail paint, which was then applied and represented social class and wealth; deep colors such as red were worn by the rich and lighter paler colors were used by the poor. The Inca civilization even went as far as painting animals on the nails to show which tribe they belonged to!
It wasn't until the early 19th century that nail paints was modernized into the nail polish that we see and know of today. The boom of the automobile industry introduced a wide selection of colors which were soon adapted to be used on nails, which further escalated the nail polish industry's success.
Today, nail polish has become a statement of personality and creativity. The color of your nails communicates the subculture you belong to. Nail art is part of the fashion voice. The application of gems, a brilliant, fine celestial and jewelry existence, means that they can complete any look.

Mention the terms Italian Culture and Renaissance Art and one is immediately reminded of the mysterious smile of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
The renaissance period had a deep effect on European culture development. Having its beginnings in Italy, by the 16th century, it had spread to the rest of Europe. Its influence was felt in different fields such as philosophy, literature, religion, science, politics, and, of course, art. The scholars of the renaissance period applied the humanist method in every field of study, and wanted human emotion and realism in art.
Renaissance scholars studied the ancient Latin and Greek texts, searching the monastic(修道院的) libraries of Europe for works of ancient times that had become obscure, in their hunt for improving and perfecting their worldly knowledge. This was completely different from the religion that Christianity(基督教) stressed. However, that does not mean that they refused Christianity. In fact, much of the greatest works of the renaissance period was devoted to it, with the church supporting a lot of the works of renaissance art. However, there were slight changes in the manner in which the scholars began to treat religion, which affected the cultural life of the society, which in turn influenced the artists of that period and therefore was reflected in their art.
In Raphael's School of Athens, for example, some well-known people were described as classical scholars, with Leonardo da Vinci being given as much importance as Plato in his time. Giotto di Bondone, 1267-1337, a Florentine, who is regarded as the greatest Italian painter just earlier than the renaissance period, is thought to be the first artist who treated a painting as a window into space.
However, it was only after the writings of Filippo Brunelleschi, 1377-1446, who is considered the first great builder of the Italian Renaissance, that perspective was formally accepted as an artistic technique.

124. The passage aims to tell us .
A. Italy's renaissance art and artists

Science has a lot of uses. It can reveal(揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there's always a temptation(诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature What are the sources of character And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't
To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole, Brooks's story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks's attempt to translate his tale into science.
125. The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to .
A. show where science can be applied
B. show the value of Brooks's new book
C. remind the reader of the importance of science
D. explain why many writers use science in their works
126. According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book
A. Its strong basis. B. Its convincing points.
C. Its clear writing. D. Its strong characters.
127. What does the underlined word "this" refer to in Paragraph 3
A. introducing scientific theories
B. telling a story
C. the science of child development
D. the theory of sexual attraction
128. What is the author's general attitude towards the book
A. Contradictory(矛盾的). B. Supportive.
C. Cautious. D. Critical.
129. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph
A. Problems with the book. B. Brooks' life experience.
C. Death of the characters. D. Brooks' translation skills.

W: So what are you doing, Tim
M: I'm writing a school paper on poster art.
W:Oh, that's an interesting topic. I heard that poster art was very popular in Paris at one time.
M: Yes, that's right. During the 1870s, Paris became a paradise for the street poster artists.
W: What did people at that time think of that type of art Did they hate it
M: I don't think so. Most people seemed to think that artwork along the streets made the area more beautiful. The street poster art wave also brought in the first form of paper advertising. Even other cities like Milan and Berlin encouraged street artists.
W: Who were some of the most famous street artists
M: John Fekner and Lee Quinones were two of the most famous American street artists.
W: Thanks for all the info - you really know a lot about street art. So when do you have to finish your school paper
M: I have to hand it in next Monday, the day after tomorrow.

W: Charles, do you spend a lot of time on social networks
M: Sure. I spend at least an hour on Facebook every day. It's my favorite social network. It now has
more than 800 million active users around the
world. So what's your favorite social network
W: My Space.
M: What can you do on it
W: A lot of stuff. Some of the most popular are My Space TV and My Space forums.
M: So do you often watch My Space TV
W: Oh yes, I love watching TV. Do you use any other social networks besides Facebook
M: Yes. I like Hi5. It's a website where you can play games, listen to music and so on.
W: I don't like playing games online. It's hard to quit once you get addicted.
M: That's true. Sometimes my girlfriend Mary gets angry with me because she thinks I spend too much time playing games online. I hate being addicted, but it's hard to quit.
W: You should try some outdoor activities. Finding something fun to do outside will help you stay away from online games.
(Text 10)
Stephen Benet was born into a world of history, poetry and laughter. By the time he was fifteen, he was writing almost every day. The summer before he entered Yale University, at the age of seventeen, he published his first book of poems.
At Yale, Stephen worked hard. He became editor of The Yale Literary Magazine. The literary magazine was popular with students and writers at other schools, too. Stephen wrote poems and articles for the magazine, and for a number of other magazines. Before he finished his four years of study at Yale, many people had read his poems and stories.
In the early 1920s, many young American writers lived in Paris. Among them were Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Stephen went there after leaving Yale and fell in love with the city. Stephen wrote two books and a great many poems while he was in Paris. Then he came back to America and decided to settle down in New York. There he used his stories and poems to show Americans what was good and valuable in their culture. He wanted to give them something to believe in.
