七、阅读理解(共17小题;共34分)
A
I was born in a small town in Wales, a wonderful place in which to grow up. It was rich and successful in the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, but when I was small, the town was one of the poorest in Europe. That didn't seem to be very important to me then. The ruins of the great factories were as romantic and impressive as those of any castle; the open mountains were within reach of any boy who could walk for fifteen minutes.
My first school was a red-brick building in the district of Georgetown. We had a splendid teacher, who could explain things so vividly to us that we could almost see what he described. And he educated our senses. He made us look at everything so firmly, to know the feel of things with our skins, to hear the particular noises all around us. So real were our experiences that we began to look for the words necessary to recreate those experiences. That is how I began to write poetry.
I can't say that poetry was my greatest interest at that time. I loved boxing most of all. I knew all the great boxers of our town. When I was ten years old I saw the fight I wrote about in The Ballad of Billy Rose. And years later, in Bristol, I saw the same man. His name, however, was really Tommy Rose, and in the first version of my poem I called him that. When I finished, I read it aloud, and I knew that something was wrong. I was forced to change it to Billy, so that there was a satisfying connection between the words "ballad" and "Billy".
Poetry is a craft as well as an art. Like any other craft, we can all learn the skills. I learned by reading the work of other poets, good poems, bad poems, learning as I read. I was very fond of funny poems, since, to be successful, funny poems have to be extremely well made. But as I grew more experienced and strict, as my taste developed, I needed better examples. I found them in the work of Edward Thomas. From him I learned how to write quietly and simply, without losing any strength or true thought. He, among many others, taught me what poetry can be.

Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school.
It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the nineteenth century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the time, nor movie theaters, nor World Wide Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of pleasure, of self-education, of connection to other people or to the world beyond one's own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one, and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life.
How did things change Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems
There are, I believe, three culprits(肇事者): poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third: the world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the twentieth century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavorable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged.
Poets failed the reader, so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.

Hundreds of great books are published in America every year. And every year, editors, critics and many readers try to choose a list of favorites.
A few books showed up on list after list of the best fictions from this year. One of them was Ann Patchett's “State of Wonder”. Publishers Weekly described the novel as one “readers will hate to see end.” The story centers on a drug researcher from Minnesota named Maria Singh. She travels to Brazil to investigate the death of a co-worker. Her search takes her deep into the Amazon area and danger. But, she also goes deep into her own soul for a close look at who she is, what she has lost in her life and how she wants the future to look. Ann Patchett lives in Tennessee. She told Publishers Weekly magazine that the state is leafy. She visited that area while doing research for the novel.
Chad Harbach's name was also all over the critics' best lists this year for his first book, “The Art of Fielding.” The New Yorker magazine praised the novel for the easy way it joins a love of baseball with a love of literature. The book is about a college baseball star. He suffers a mental crisis and begins to fail on the playing field as a result. But the book is about much more than the sport of baseball. It also is a story of love, loss, friendship and growing up. Chad Harbach says his own upbringing influenced the book.
“The Marriage Plot” also got a lot of attention this year. It is the third book from Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Eugenides. He spent almost ten years writing it. “The Marriage Plot” is also a story about becoming an adult. It follows the lives of three students in their final year of college and beyond. The novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe, born 200 years ago, was a poor housewife with six children, who suffered from various illnesses. And yet, driven by a passionate hatred of slavery, she found time to write Uncle Tom's Cabin, which became the most influential novel in American history and aroused radical change both at home and abroad.
Today, however, the book has a different reputation, owing to the popular image of its character, Uncle Tom—whose name has become a saying for a cowardly black man who betrays his race.
But this view is wrong: The original Uncle Tom was physically and morally strong, an inspiration for blacks and other oppressed people worldwide.
Indeed, that's why in the mid 19th century Southerners attacked Uncle Tom's Cabin as a dangerously destructive book, while Northern reformers—especially blacks—often praised it.
The book was influential overseas, too. In Russia it inspired Vladimir Lenin, who recalled it as his favorite book in childhood. It was the first American novel to be translated and published in China, and it fueled antislavery causes in Cuba and Brazil.
The book's progressive appeal was the character of Uncle Tom himself: a strong man who is notable because he does not betray his race; one reason he gave up escaping from his plantation is that he doesn't want to put his fellow slaves in danger. And he is finally killed because he refuses to tell his master where two runaway slaves are hiding.
Unfortunately, these themes were lost in many of the stage versions of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
The play, seen by more people than those who read the book, remained popular up to the 1950s and still appears occasionally. But in the play Stowe's revolutionary themes were drowned.
But it doesn't have to be that way; indeed, during the civil rights era it was those who most closely resembled Uncle Tom—Stowe's Tom, not the sheepish one of popular myth—who proved most effective in promoting progress. Both Stowe and Tom deserve our reconsideration-and our respect.
113. Harriet Beecher Stowe managed to write "Uncle Tom's Cabin" because .
A. she wanted to earn money to support her family
B. she hated slavery from the bottom of her heart
C. she tried to set an example to her six children
D. she had the similar life experiences with Tom
114. As for the influence of the book, .
A. it was the first American novel to be translated into Russian
B. it was the most influential book for Vladimir Lenin in his life
C. it also gave rise to the causes of antislavery in the distant Africa
D. its character Tom inspired the blacks and other oppressed people in the world

A. He is a black man who betrays his race.
B. He manages to escape from the plantation.
C. He doesn't put his fellow slaves in danger.

116. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true

M:We use all sorts of services without thinking how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for them through taxes. What would happen if everyone in a city stops paying taxes The water supply would stop. The street might not be cleaned. There would be no police force to protect people and property.
The chief duty of every government is to protect people and property.More than three fourths of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next largest amount of public money goes to teaching and training our citizens.Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries.Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials.
Years ago the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands have now been sold. The money raised was used to help pay the cost of government. There are still some public lands that contain oil, coal, gas, and other natural products. They could be sold, but we want to save them for future years. So we all must pay our shares for the services which make our life comfortable.
