七、阅读理解(共15小题;共30分)
A
In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard, the pay was poor and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.
First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.
I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.
But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.
I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there's a dark period in-between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, “Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding(有回报的).

Teamwork is all about working together to achieve a common goal or purpose. Is teamwork out of date Why is it so hard to effectively conduct teamwork in those things
One way we employ teamwork in everyday lives is by becoming a parent. It is a parent's job to teach their children and the basic skills and give them the knowledge they need to be successful in life. For example, the mother teaches her children manners and good health skills, while the father teaches them how to catch a ball or drive a car. However, in today's society, we find that more and more parents are experiencing that the teamwork is a one-sided thing. According to a report, there are 13.7 million single parents raising their children in the US and this could be due to the fact that parents don't take responsibility for their children, so they leave one parent to do it alone. This is a sad fact, but it reflects that effective teamwork is losing ground in the parenting aspect of our everyday lives.
Another place where teamwork affects us greatly is in our jobs. It doesn't matter if you are a small or large company; if you have at least one employee and yourself, then teamwork will be present. I have noticed that with the current economic recession(衰退期), people are racing to grab jobs but the quality of people's work has gone down greatly. It just appears to me that people do not take pride in their work any more. They want to get to work as fast as they can, just to receive the paycheck, but their quality standards fly right out the window. So I think teamwork is losing its ground in the workforce. There are too many people who want to work independently and forget they are a part of a team.
As you can see, we run into the aspects of teamwork in just about everything we do. Do you believe teamwork is really losing ground in today's society I think it is.
104. Why does teamwork disappear in the parenting aspect of our daily life
A. Parents have no time to spare with their children.
B. Parents have no chances to teach their children about it.
C. Many children are often brought up by a single parent.
D. Many children are independent to deal with their matters.
105. Teamwork is losing ground in workforce mainly because .
A. workers don't like to work together with others
B. workers' sense is affected by economic recession
C. workers want to prove they are more capable
D. fewer workers are employed to save money
106. The author wants us to believe his opinion by .
A. listing some data B. giving some examples
C. asking some questions D. analyzing some cases
107. The underlined phrase "fly right out the window" in Paragraph 3 means .
A. disappear B. improve C. increase D. matter
D
Finding that first job in radio or television may be the most difficult part of your career in broadcast journalism. Advice on finding first jobs is often sought from working journalists, all of whom have faced the same problem at some time in their lives. It is a familiar dilemma(两难, 困难): you need experience to land a job, but you cannot gain experience unless you first have a job.
The advice most journalists offer is to get experience before you leave college, in whatever broadcast—related field you can find. Work on the school newspaper or at the campus radio station, volunteer to sweep floors at the local radio and television station, try to set up your own summer work—study internship at a station of your choosing, but get experience.
Often, small commercial stations without union restriction offer the most rounded experience. At such stations, given enough time, you may be able to sample most of jobs that are available, from writing and reporting to on—air delivery, with such experience, you can determine which jobs are best suited to your interests and abilities.
Besides acquiring a well-rounded liberal arts education, which is essential for the broadcast journalist, you should immerse yourself in courses that offer hoards-on expert television in the practical and creative aspects of radio and television production, cinematography, film, editing and writing for broadcast. You may encounter the broadcast. You may encounter the occasional station that doesn't require the college degree as condition for full-time employment. But it will be the exception. Other stations, particularly those on low budgets in small towns, may hire from the ranks of the so-called mail-order "schools of broadcasting" which may be fine for those pursuing disc-jockey careers, but which, in our view, fail to offer adequate preparation for a career in journalism.
108. Which of the following statements can be the best title of the passage
A. your first job
B. Broadcasting experience
C. Qualifications of starting a journalistic career
D. Where you fit in
109. According to the passage, you should to find a job in radio or television station.
A. have rich experience
B. have a well-rounded liberal arts education
C. indulge yourself in some journalistic courses
D. all of the above
110. Some stations don' t require the college degree as a condition for full-time employment, because of .
A. low budgets B. no good applicants
C. private ownership D. small population
八、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)
The Pleasing Sound of a Rainstick
A stick is a long tube that is carved out, with small sticks or other materials pushed inside so that it has a somewhat smooth surface on the outside, but small barriers inside. These can be in a lined pattern, for a specific sound, or placed at random for a more varied effect. It is then filled with a variety of different things, like small stones, or beads(珠子), or even rice, and the ends are capped to provide a seal. 111.
The origins of rainsticks are not really known and so the stories are quite varied. Some people say that the ancient peoples of Chile created rainsticks from dried cactus(仙人掌), with the sharp points taken off, pushed back inside and then filled with small stones. 112. The Deaguita Indians survive even today, and they are still using them in many of their rain ceremonies. They also make them as musical instruments.
113. Turning the stick over quickly will produce a higher sound, while turning it slowly will produce a deeper effect. How long the effect lasts depends on how long the instrument is. The tube also affects the quality of the rain sound as well. If you make them from some kind of absorbent material, like cactus or bamboo, you will hear it better than if you were to make it from cardboard tubing.
A rainstick can be made from almost any kind of material and the types of things that you can use as fillings can be even more varied. 114. Usually, these school projects are made using a cardboard tube, like the center from a roll of toilet paper or a paper towel tube. Tooth picks are then inserted, with the exposed ends cut off and glued in place. 115.
A. You can even make your own rainsticks, and they are often part of school projects where they are used to help children learn the history of Indian peoples.
B. When turned upside down, these materials fall down through the tube, bouncing off the barriers to produce a calming rain-like sound.
C. These were then capped with pieces of wood on the ends and used in ceremonies to bring rain to their crops.
D. One end is capped off with poster board and filled with rice or beans, and then the other end is sealed.
E. You can get different rain sounds, depending on how fast you turn the rainstick itself.
F. This rainstick can never be opened according to the scared writings of the ancients.
G. They can be three feet or longer depending on what the tube itself is made from.
