Actress Hayden Panettiere recently got into trouble with Japanese fishermen as she tried to stop them from killing dolphins.
The 18-year-old star with some other surfers sailed out to reach the dolphins in order to stop them from being driven into a nearby pool and killed, but the six surfers, from Australia and the United States, were stopped by a fishing boat before they could reach them. The fishermen blocked their way with a boathook(钩篙). It was an ugly, unfriendly and life-threatening struggle before the surfers were forced to return to the beach. It is believed that the dolphins were later taken into a pool and killed.
Panettiere, who is a brave surfer and loyal animal protector, made up her mind to save the dolphins of Japan and said, "It was really frightening. Some of us were hit by the boathook, but in the end all we were really worried about was the dolphins. It was so sad. We were so close to them and they were jumping out of the water to see us." Breaking down in tears, she added, "One little baby dolphin stuck his head out and looked at me and the thought that it's no longer with us is really hard to take."
The surfers left the country to avoid arrest(逮捕) by the Japanese police. Panettiere is now back in Los Angeles.
More than 22,000 dolphins are killed by fishermen in Japan every year. Many Japanese believe dolphins should be treated like fish. They have been hunting dolphins for centuries and see any criticism(批评) of this as an attack on their culture.

As the world's largest terrestrial carnivore (陆地食肉动物), the polar bear is the king of the great white north. Adult males can measure more than 9 feet in length and weigh between 770 and 1,430 pounds. The polar bears have a strong body while their heads are narrow with small, rounded ears.
Polar bears can be found in northern Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia, and there have been reports that polar bear tracks have been found as far north as the North Pole. The 5,000,000-square-mile range of the polar bear circles the Arctic and contains pieces of open water where seals are easily caught.
Polar bears live on the annual Arctic sea ice that provides a platform from which they can hunt. They hunt seals on the sea ice by breaking into seal dens in the sea ice. The dens aren't visible from above, but seeing is less important than smelling to a polar bear—with their sharp sense of smell, polar bears can sense the breathing holes of seals in their dens beneath the snow and ice. As the southern edge of the Arctic ice cap melts in summer, polar bears are forced to stay on land and spend their summers fasting(禁食), living off body fat stored from hunting in spring and winter.
With about 22,000 polar bears living in the wild, the species is not endangered at the moment, but its future is far from certain. Climate change is causing the disappearance of sea ice from which polar bears hunt seals. Sea ice in the Arctic is melting earlier and forming later each year. People have reached an agreement that controls the hunting of polar bears and directs each nation to protect their habitats, but it does not protect the bears against the biggest man-made threat to their survival: global warming. If current warming trends continue, scientists believe that polar bears may disappear within 100 years.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain "collections" of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats. Zoo officials teach people that it is not acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural zones.
Zoo officials claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals' natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species' name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals' normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don't usually take care of the animals' natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis(动物精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals at zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoo officials talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals' natural habitats.
98. How would the author describe the animals' life at zoos
A. Dangerous. B. Unhappy. C. Natural. D. Easy.
99. What does the author try to argue in the passage
A. The animal protectors rather than zoos are worth the public support.
B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should provide animals with natural environment.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
100. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by .
A. pointing out the faults in what zoos do
B. using evidence he has collected at zoos
C. questioning the way animals are protected
D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats
101. Although he argues against zoos, the author still agrees that .
A. zoos keep animals in big cages
B. most animals at zoos are endangered species
C. some endangered animals are reproduced at zoos
D. animals should be sent back to the wild
D
Each time you go to the supermarket, you come away with your purchases in plastic bags. But wouldn't it be kinder to the environment if you asked for paper bags instead
The answer is not the easy as it might seem. Environmentalists say there are drawbacks to using both plastic bags and paper bags.
According to the American Plastics Council 80 percent of groceries in the US are packed in plastic bags.
“The numbers are becoming huge,” said Vincent Cobb, a businessman from Chicago who set up “reusable ” on the Internet. He notes that consumers use between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags per year worldwide.
Some experts believe that all these bags harm the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and, as it does so, poisonous materials are released into the water and soil.
Further damage is caused if plastic bags enter the sea. For example, endangered sea turtles cannot tell the bags from jellyfish(水母), their main source of food, and often choke on (噎死) them.
Floating plastic bags have been spotted as far north as the Arctic Ocean and as far south as the southern end of South America. One expert predicts that, within ten years, plastic bags will wash up in Antarctica!
However, this kind of bag does have its advantages.
“Plastic grocery bags are some of the most reused things around the house,” explained Laurie Kusek of the American Plastics Council.
According to the Film and Bag Federation, a trade group in the US plastics industry, paper bags use more energy and create more waste than plastic bags. Plastic bags require 40 per cent less energy to produce and cause 70 per cent less air pollution, the group explained. They also release as much as 94 percent less waste into the water than paper ones.
But paper bags do break down more quickly than plastic bags. They don't endanger wildlife, either.
So what should we do One possible solution would be to use biodegradable(可降解的) plastic bags. But until biodegradable technology improves, it might be easier to pack things you buy in reusable cloth bags.
102. The best title of the passage is .
A. Paper Causes Less Pollution
B. Plastic Causes Less Pollution
C. Paper and Plastics Cause Pollution
D. Paper Bags Break Down More Quickly
103. The underlined word “drawbacks” might mean “ ”.
A. advantages B. disadvantages C. air pollution D. waste
104. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. Plastic takes longer to break down than paper.
B. Sea turtles usually mistake the plastic bags for jellyfish.
C. Paper bags require less energy than plastic bags.
D. You'd better pack things in reusable cloth bags.
105. Which of the following shows that paper bags are better than plastic ones
A. Paper bags take less time to rot.
B. Paper bags cause less air pollution.
C. Paper bags are more reusable.
D. Paper bags cause less water pollution.

To build a green school, I'd like to give a few suggestions as follow: Littering should not be allowed at school so rubbish takes time to break down. We need to plant more trees on campus since they will not only add beauty to our school but also reduces the content of CO2 in the atmosphere. Recycling is considered as the key to protect the environment so that we can encourage our students recycle bottles, plastics bags, batteries and waste newspapers. Furthermore, it is less costly to buy recycling materials. Someone needs to make an effort to save energy at school. For example, we should turn out off electricity equipment when it isn't used. I believed that our united efforts can make our school the real green school.

W: How are we going to solve the problem of over-
population Is the use of birth-control method a good way
of reducing the population
M:
Some countries have succeeded in controlling their own
populations. But it is a complex matter.
Certain religions
or cultures forbid family planning.
(Text 2)
M:
Overcrowded cities have many problems, such as lack
of housing, inadequate clean drinking water and lack of
employment. All these bring about an increase in poverty,
disease and crime.
W: Yes.
Large numbers of people have come to bigger
cities hoping for better work and pay, but how many of
them can turn their dreams into reality
(Text 3)
W: Wow,
I do like this campus. All the big trees, the green
lawns and the old buildings with tall columns. It's really
beautiful.
M: It sure is. The architecture of these buildings is in the
Greek style. It was popular in the 18th century here.
(Text 4)
M: When is the garbage picked up here
W: On Wednesdays, but I always put the cans out on
Tuesday night, so I don't miss the trucks in the morning.
(Text 5)
W: How do I get one of those green buckets everyone here
puts out for paper recycling
M: Oh,
just call up the sanitation department. They'll deliver
a bucket at no charge.
(Text 6)
W: How do you get to work, Joe
M: Well, in the morning
I get to the subway by bicycle,
and I park my bicycle there and
then take the subway
into the city.
W: There is no bus from your home to the subway station
M: No, but
I think buses are bad and cars are even worse.
They both cause terrible pollution in towns and cities.
And if you take a bus, there're many stops, traffic lights
and things like that. But the subway moves pretty quickly.
W: So you prefer riding a bicycle to taking buses.
M: Yes, I think it's better for the environment and it's good
exercise.
(Text 7)
M: Oh, no, another day like this. I wish there was something
we could do about all the air pollution.
W: I know what you mean. But I don't think there is too
much that can be done as long as we use so many cars.
It's mostly the fumes from the cars that make the air so
dirty.
M:
Oh, honey.
You know that it's not really the fault of
cars. It's the fault of the factories.
W: You say that just because you like the convenience of
your car. You won't even walk to school. You say that
it's because of the pollution. Then you go out in your car
and add to the pollution.
M: You're right. I'm going to do my part for the environment
and walk to school today.
W: Not only will it help the air quality, but it will help
your body, too. You haven't been getting enough
exercise lately.
(Text 8)
M: Anne, have you ever seen the movie G-Force
W: Yeah, it's a funny movie. Those guinea pigs are quite
cute and clever.
M: And the tools they used are quite intelligent and delicate,
such as the rapid deployment vehicle they rode.
W: The man that trained them and invented the tools is also a
great guy.
M: Right! And I wonder what kind of director could come up
with this movie
W: I think he must be a man that loves the guinea pigs
very much and knows them very well.
M: I agree with you. And the end of the movie tells us that
we human beings always kill animals. Lots of them are
endangered.
W: What I like most is when the guinea pigs realized they
are just ordinary rodents but not genetically engineered,
they could still believe in themselves.
M: But what I appreciate most is their friendship and family
love. Love is the most powerful weapon in the world.
W: Yes, I think we had better protect the animals from then
on.
(Text 9)
W: Is that the river you've been telling me about
M: Right. What do you think of it
W: Beautiful. The water is clean. And there're so many
people fishing in it.
M: Can you believe it was very dirty two years ago People
threw waste into it and it smelled so terrible that it made
you sick to walk along it and breathe the air near it.
W: So you must have done a great deal to make it clean.
M: Indeed. But we owe many thanks to our new mayor, Mr
Turner.
W: Why
M: Many mayors before him didn't pay any attention to the
dirty river. It was Turner who thought of the best way to
make the river clean.
W: What was it
M: Once he took office two years ago he ordered two
trucks to be driven along both sides to collect the
rubbish every day.
W: The river soon began to get clean after people stopped
polluting it.
M: Yes.
(Text 10)
W: Today, I will make a speech on zoos. Many people think
zoos are cruel, and have no place in the modern world. It
is my own opinion that zoos, although not perfect, do
have a useful function.
Firstly, zoos are places of education. Zoos can help
children to appreciate nature. Furthermore, research
into animal behavior is done in zoos, and has increased
knowledge of zoology, genetics and even psychology.
Above all, zoos can protect many species of animals for
the future. Many species today are in danger of extinction,
and thanks to zoos, they have a chance of survival.
Opponents of zoos say that they are cruel. First of all,
they argue, zoos can not recreate the environment in which
animals live and because of this, animals are bored and
depressed. Secondly, animals have frequent contact with human
visitors, which can be stressful.
However, in my opinion, most zoos have improved
recently. It is now quite rare to see animals in cages, and
most zoos try hard to recreate the environment in which
different animals live.
In conclusion, although zoos are not perfect for animals,
I believe that they have more advantages than
disadvantages. In an ideal world, zoos would not be
necessary. But as long as man hunts animals for profit
and destroys their environments, zoos are essential.
