七、阅读理解(共14小题;共28分)
A
In October 2010, I left my hometown and family in Virginia and moved to Iowa so I could be coached by Liang Chow. I'd been dreaming of an Olympic gold medal since I was eight—but gradually, that dream seemed like a million miles away.
On January 2, 2012, while mom was visiting me in Iowa, I told her, "I don't like gymnastics anymore. I want to try dancing, or become a singer. I can get a job in Virginia. I just want to come home."
Mom's eyes narrowed and her expression turned to stone. "You're breaking my heart, Brie," she said, "You've been doing gymnastics for ten years, and now you want to quit Have you lost your mind "
I hadn't lost my mind, but I had lost my fire. It's an entirely different thing to push toward that dream when you feel alone.
"I'm not trying to break your heart, mom," I said, "I just don't want to do it anymore."
"I know you miss home. But you've signed a contract that says you will represent your country to the best of your ability. You've got a responsibility to your teammates. And now you just want to walk away I will not let you be dishonorable. If you don't like gymnastics, then at the very least, you will finish the season."
The next afternoon as I dragged myself into Chow's gym, I thought of the efforts mom had made in order to pay for my training. I thought of my two sisters: Arielle, who gave up ballroom dancing, and Joyelle, who stopped ice skating so that our single mom could afford to keep me in gymnastics.
For now, here's what you need to know: Exactly 210 days before I ever attempted my first vault(跳跃) in the London Summer Olympics, my leap of faith came this close to ending in a crash of disaster.

Exchanging music over the Internet is fun and easy. Better yet, it's free, which means you don't have to pay for any more expensive music CDs. Several online file-sharing services make it easy for music lovers to exchange their favorite tunes with one another.
However, this illegal sharing of music—a form of music piracy—is doing harm to the music industry. Industry experts estimate that U.S. $4.3 billion in worldwide sales was lost to music piracy last year. These lost profits could force record companies to stop producing the music of many popular artists. That would hurt both musicians and music fans alike.
Music producers are puzzled about how to fight music piracy. Their efforts to fight piracy using the law have had only limited success. The music industry did win a legal victory against Napster, a famous music website. The courts ordered Napster to stop giving away copyrighted music from their site. But a number of other music-sharing networks have sprung up in its place.
These new networks are made up of thousands, or even millions, of individuals. Unlike Napster, there's no one company controlling the distribution(发行) of music over each network. So it's nearly impossible to stop the illegal activities.
Now people in the music industry have decided that "if you can't beat them, join them". They've begun to offer legal alternatives to online music piracy. Major music producers have given companies like Apple Computer permission to sell their music online. Apple's iTune Music Store allows computer users to legally download any song for 99 cents.
Will these new measures save the music industry from piracy That depends on whether music fans are willing to pay 99 cents for a song that they can download illegally for free. Unfortunately, many people believe music should be free. The music industry, however, hopes to persuade these music fans to change their tune.

Immigrants to the coast of southern Appalachian Mountains of North America brought the music and instruments of the Old World along with them for nearly 300 years. They brought some of their most important valuables with them. To most of them this was an instrument. Early Scottish settlers enjoyed the violin because it could be played to sound sad or lively. The Irish violin, the German dulcimer, the Italian mandolin, the Spanish guitar, and the West African banjo were the most common musical instruments.
The communication among musicians from different ethnic groups (族群) produced music unique to this region of North America. Appalachian string bands (弦乐队) of the early 20th century primarily consisted of the violin, guitar, and banjo. This early country music along with early recorded country music is often referred to as old-time music.
According to Bill Malone in Country Music U.S.A., country music was "introduced to the world as a southern phenomenon". In the South, folk music was a combination of cultural types, combining musical traditions of a variety of ethnic groups in the region. For example, some instrumental pieces from Anglo-Celtic immigrants were the basis of folk songs and ballads that form what is now known as old-time music, from which country music descended. It is commonly thought that British and Irish folk music influenced the development of old-time music. British and Irish arrivals to the Southern U.S. included immigrants from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England.
When many people think or hear country music, they think of it as a creation of European-Americans. However, a great deal of style—and of course, the banjo, a major instrument in most early American folk songs—came from African-Americans. One of the reasons country music was created by African-Americans, as well as European-Americans, is that blacks and whites in rural communities in the south often worked and played together.
92. Where might the immigrants live 300 years ago
A. In the mountains. B. Near the sea.
C. Along the lakes. D. By the rivers.
93. Why did early Scottish settlers like to play the violin
A. Because the violin could produce sound sad or cheerful.
B. Because the settlers always had nothing to do.
C. Because the settlers wanted to win the competitions among themselves.
D. Because the violin could bring about happy feelings in the settlers' life.
94. What can we infer from the second paragraph
A. Different kinds of instruments made the music unique.
B. Musicians from different ethnic groups liked to exchange ideas with each other.
C. Musicians never gave their own music to others.
D. Old-time music was played by the violin, guitar, and mandolin in the beginning.

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.
Music provides a kind of perception(感知) that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore emotive(情感的) meaning of the same phenomenon(现象). We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all. The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings "talk" to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, and our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.
Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.
So music education is far more necessary than people to realize.
96. According to Paragraph 1, students .
A. disagree with their parents on education
B. view music as an overlooked subject
C. regard music as a way of entertainment
D. prefer the arts to science
97. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to .
A. compare it with rock music
B. show music identifies a society
C. introduce American musical traditions
D. prove music influences people's lifestyles
98. According to the passage, the arts and science .
A. explore different phenomena of the world
B. express people's feelings in different ways
C. show what it means to be human differently
D. explain the world in different ways
99. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Music education needs more attention.
B. Music should be of top education priority.
C. Music is an effective communication tool.
D. Music education makes students more imaginative.
