An elegantly dressed man entered a famous jewelry shop one day. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl for his wife's birthday. The price didn't matter, since business had been particularly good for him that year. After examining a number of beautiful and expensive pearls, he chose an exquisite black one that cost $5,000. He paid for the gem in cash, shook hands with the jeweler, and left.
A few days later the man returned and said that his wife had liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality, as she wanted a pair of earrings made. Can you possibly give me any advice on how to get hold of such a pearl " said the man. The jeweler regretfully replied, "I would say it's virtually impossible to find an exact duplicate of that pearl."
The millionaire insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspaper, and offered $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the ad, but nobody had a pearl that was just right. Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his store. To his amazement, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse. "I don't like to part with," she said sadly. "I inherited from my mother, and my mother inherited it from hers, but I really need the money."
The jeweler was quick to pay the old lady before she changed her mind. Then he called the millionaire's house to tell him the good news. The millionaire, however, was nowhere to be found.

Happiness is important to everyone. Most people want to be happy but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness.
Some people believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to do anything they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not only money, but also many other things which can't be bought by money. However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness, nor is holding a high position in the government. These people value(重视) their beliefs, or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy.
Here are a few ways to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job, that we don't enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have close friends usually enjoy happier and healthier lives.
The second secret of happiness is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activity.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful things for other people. If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to get food for an old neighbor, or simply help around the house.

I bought 10 sets of Christmas china that were marked at 75 percent off plus an additional 10 percent. It was an amazing deal. When I got them home, I found they took half a closet to store. I already have nice china I can use at Christmas. I decided it wasn't worth it to me to use that much space for something that I would only use a couple of times in the year. I took them back and now I have more money in my checking account as well as some luxury towels I have wanted for a long time. I would have saved myself the time of taking the china back if I had figured out beforehand what I really wanted, but it is sometimes hard to decide at the moment. This experience helped me to realize that you can actually save time and money by passing up bargains.
The main advantage of getting things on sale is that you can afford luxuries that you can't afford at regular price. My Christmas tree is covered with beautiful handmade Santa Claus ornaments(装饰物). I found them at a store about 15 months ago and fell in love with them. I imagined how beautiful they would look on my tree. I wanted to buy some, but they were $13.95 each. It didn't fit into our Christmas budget, so I gave up the idea. Through the next few months the price kept dropping until it went down to $2.95. When I saw that price, I bought 25 of them right away. I waited another nine months to put them on my tree, but in the end, I got exactly what I wanted for an excellent price. Instead of paying around $350, I ended up paying around $75. Patience paid off.
90. Why did the writer take the sets of china she had bought back to the shop
A. Because they were of poor quality.
B. Because they were too expensive.
C. Because they were of no practical use for her.
D. Because they covered too much room.

Devon, 17, is used to paying her own cell phone and car expenses(费用). But lately it's been harder. The family she takes care of the children for hasn't been calling as much and she couldn't find a job over the summer. Devon's dad says it's a sign of the tough economy. He told her he's feeling the pinch, too.
These days it's hard to avoid news about the economy. Turn on the computer or TV and words like "recession(衰退)" and "unemployment" fill the screen. It can seem a bit terrible—and some families are hit really hard.
But as discouraging as things may seem now, the good news is that the economy always gets back on track after a while.
When Shauna's dad was out of work and had to take a lower-paying job, she decided to help out by planting a vegetable garden. The garden became more than just a way to save money. Shauna's parents found weeding and watering are great ways to relax.
For some people, the slow economy means eating out less or staying home instead of going on vacation. Parents may not have as much money to put toward pocket money. For other families, though, money problems mean bigger changes, such as a parent taking on a second job or the family having to move to a less expensive house.
When a family has money worries, it's easy to get frustrated and upset—and if you feel that way, you're far from alone. Parents also might be more stressed out than usual. They might argue more and worry about how to pay for things.
Naturally, this can put extra stress on you, too, especially because parents' money problems aren't something you have any control over. But although you can't solve family money troubles, you may find that contributing in some way helps you feel better.
94. What do we know about Devon
A. She is a little lazy.
B. She is independent.
C. She usually gets money from her dad.
D. She hates to work during the summer.
95. How did Shauna's parents probably find gardening
A. Troublesome. B. Boring. C. Worthwhile. D. Interesting.
96. When a family has money worries, they usually choose to do the following EXCEPT .
A. eating out less B. going on vacation
C. finding a second job D. moving to a cheaper house
97. What will most probably be discussed in the paragraph that follows the passage
A. Some effects of a difficult economy.
B. Some examples of unhappy families.
C. Some reasons for family money problems.
D. Some tips for dealing with a tough economy.
