Cultural shock is real. It is universal, powerful and usually unexpected. That's why it comes as a shock.
Move, as I did, from the UK to Japan, and the differences in the way things were done really hit you! My first reaction was excitement. I felt like an explorer in an exciting new world. I was trying out a new language, new standards of dress, new means of transport and even new technology. Everything was full of interest and possibilities. That is stage one of cultural shock—the exciting stage. It can last from a few days to several months.
After a while you begin to adapt. The exciting things start to become normal. Some of the new things stop being exciting and start to become annoying. In my case, I took for granted the great train system and the wonderful level of service in the shops. I discovered that I really did not like Japanese food. I spent a lot of time searching out ways of not having to eat sushi, seaweed, raw eggs and tasteless noodles. Sometimes I even felt irritated that good ingredients were being wasted. I also grew irritated that my obvious "foreignness" made me stand out in a crowd and people would stare at me. In my case, this unsatisfactory stage lasted more than six months.
Then comes a more balanced stage. You accept that some aspects of the new culture are great, some not, but that a generally happy life is perfectly possible. You stop getting irritated, and you consciously enjoy the aspects of the new culture that work well for you. My guess is that this stage of balanced acceptance of the new culture could go on for years.

As weather cools across the United States, a growing number of Americans visit farms. They harvest fruits, enjoy hay wagon rides and walk in the fields. These people are called "agri-tourists". They improve the economy of rural areas and help farmers increase their profits.
School children are walking in a corn field maze. The corn is cut into tricky passageways that make it difficult to find a way out. The children are from Yorktown Elementary School in Bowie Maryland. They have traveled to Montpelier Farms in Prince George's County which is also in Maryland. The farm is about 40 kilometers from The White House.
Debbie Pierson is the student's teacher. "We go on these kind of field trips so that the children will have a hands-on experience of what it's like to be on a farm," Pierson said.
In Loudoun County Virginia, there are farms where grapes are grown for use in making wine. Many of the farms let people visit, and drink the wine that is made there. Bill Hatch owns the Zephaniah Farm Vineyard. He holds wine tastings in his home. "We are doubling the number of visitors to our farm every year. We have an average of 250 people on a weekend," Hatch said.
As more people visit farms, more farmers are adding activities in which visitors can take part.
Malcolm Baldwin owns WeatherLea Farm and Vineyard in Loudoun County. Six years ago, he began letting people be married at his farm. They can also sleep at the farm overnight. Mr. Baldwin says the money he makes from these activities let him keep his small farm operating. "But without the animals, and without the vines, the wedding business wouldn't be as profitable(有利可图的), because people like to see the vines. They like to see the animals and without which I don't think this will be a popular place," Baldwin said.

In England three foreign gentlemen studied the information on the post sign at a bus stop. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted rude words about the foreigners. The bus conductor came to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.
A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. Also in India, you might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and consider that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India shaking one's head means expressing agreement. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express "yes"—a nod means "no".
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence(冒犯). It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult.
Attitudes to women vary a lot around the world. In Japan, for example, men usually plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.
Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are traveling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality(礼节).

The world has changed and being intelligent isn't normally equal to being a successful person. Look at the example of the blue whale: it has a huge brain, but it still doesn't know how to avoid whalers or use its large size and weight to deal with those who try to use their body for profit. Scientists hold an opinion that the blue whale just likes some highly intelligent people who fail to succeed. Those highly intelligent people can't succeed in life because they can't communicate well with the world around them.
Intelligence is a word in life that makes you think you are better than others. Intelligence can blind these very people from how others view them. These people also think that the route to power and success results purely from intelligence and they sometimes live in a fantasy world that they create by their supposed brain power.
This is a distance that develops whether or not they realize it and sometimes, a person can be disliked simply because of his or her intelligence. This distance is sometimes so far apart that it gets to the position where they can't listen to each other. One side thinks the other is stupid and the other thinks he/she is haughty(傲慢的). And most of the time it is the intelligent people who lose themselves in this situation. They become unpopular with most of the people around them. This affects them in whatever they do and sooner or later they will lose their confidence.
It doesn't help that they get a culture shock—especially when they leave college and realize success and richness don't always and sometimes never come naturally with intelligence. While some might think this is a dramatic picture to paint, it is sometimes the end result of some people.
106. The example of “the blue whale” is used to show .
A. communication is more important than intelligence
B. human beings are always more intelligent than animals
C. humans should have the sense of protecting animals
D. the blue whale is the largest animal in the world
107. Those supposed intelligent people often believe that .
A. they should make their life the same with others
B. they should live in a better world than the others
C. they are sure to be successful because of their intelligence
D. other people's opinion should be seriously considered
108. What makes the intelligent people lose their confidence
A. They become separated from other people and lose their support.
B. They often can't get higher positions though they are intelligent.
C. They can't persuade those stupid people to accept their ideas.
D. They often can't make good use of their advantages.
109. We can infer that the end result of the supposed intelligent people would be .
A. great achievements B. more efforts
C. failure in the future D. proper changes

110. Besides, in top-grade restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you're in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.
The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. 111. If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.
112. In formal dinners, there are always "public" chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. 113. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.
People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. 114. Or you will always overeat!
A. This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness.
B. Chinese food contains much less calorie.
C. Soup then will be served to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings.
D. When you have had enough, just say so.
E. Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that's only superficial.
F. Some Chinese people are so hospitable that they use their own chopsticks to put food into the plates of their guests.
G. Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests.

M: Good morning everyone. I'm Professor Garson and will be your advisor this term.
This is your first day and I want to explain some of the subjects. First, everyone must take three required subjects: math, English and history. The only one which is arranged for you is English. You're to be tested and will be placed at your level in that subject. The only requirement for math is that you've completed the previous level. History is open at all levels since study is usually divided into the different historical time periods. In history, you may choose from almost any culture and time. Unless you're studying a specific culture or time period, you're free to choose the history course that you're most interested in. As long as there's a place in the class, of course. Your optional courses are the subjects you can choose. They are courses that are not required and may be in fields such as science, art, sports, computer science, business—almost anything that you can think of. I can help you make a plan that will include your required and optional courses. Your plan must have the necessary number of units. Sometimes there may be no room in a course, but we can try to schedule the course for another term.
