We have all heard how plastic pollution has overflowed every corner of the world. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream.
After analyzing blood samples (样本) from 22 healthy people, researchers found microplastics in 17 of them! Most of the microplastics were classified as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly found in drink bottles, and there were small amounts of polyethylene, which makes up plastic bags.
Although the exact chemical effects of microplastics on our bodies are unknown, it is clear that the increasing amounts of plastic in our environment could bring a risk to human cells in the future.
Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal that they could be found everywhere across the skies. For example, scientists recently discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees Mountain Range in Europe, believed to have arrived by rain or snow.
The low mass of microplastics makes them spread through air, which is why they can travel hundreds, even thousands, of miles from their source. They are also likely to spread through wastewater, oceans, and even soil.
Microplastics that are being blown and swept into the air have the potential to affect air quality and cloud formation. In fact, massive microplastics in the air could form such a kind of clouds that tend to stick around longer than naturally forming clouds.
With microplastics accumulating in the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect human lungs. The new study will allow scientists to better understand the impacts on human health and is a reminder of the need to find other replacements for plastic.

A new observation in Sumatra caught seasoned scientists by surprise. An orangutan (红毛猩猩) known as Rakus treated a fresh wound with a medicinal plant, making this the first time an animal has been seen applying a biologically active substance (物质) for its health benefits. This leaves scientists wondering: Did humans invent medicine, or does it pre-date our species
These animals are known to be among the most intelligent non-human primates (灵长类). They’ve been observed using tools, communicating vocally, and engaging in even more complex behaviors like calculated reciprocity, which involves aiding another orangutan with the expectation of being paid back. They can even use Skype with some help from humans.
Roughly 60,000-70,000 of these creatures remain in the wild, about 15,000 of which live on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. That’s where the Suaq Project, part of the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior, observes orangutans in their natural habitat.
The researchers noted in June that Rakus had a small wound on his face following a fight with another mature male orangutan. Several days later, Rakus did something no one had ever seen a primate do before. He began carefully picking the leaves from a climbing vine (藤蔓) known as akar kuning. Local human populations have long used these leaves for pain relief and to treat conditions like malaria. Orangutans don’t usually eat these plants; indeed, Rakus didn’t eat them. He chewed (嚼碎) them and then applied the resulting paste to his facial wound.
This is the first time researchers have seen such behavior in 21 years at the Sumatran research station. Wild orangutans are rarely injured, so this may be a rare but widespread behavior. Or perhaps Rakus is the only one that knows this trick. The researchers assumed that early humans may have learned about certain treatment by observing animals engaging in similar behaviors. And here we are, thousands of generations later, still watching and wondering just how smart they are. Increasingly, it looks like orangutans are one cave painting away from civilization.
8.Why does the author mention Skype in paragraph 2
A.To support an idea. B.To draw a conclusion.
C.To explain a problem. D.To present a suggestion.
9.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.How Rakus got injured. B.How Rakus treated his wound.
C.What Rakus ate in the wild. D.What Rakus explored in the forest.
10.What can be inferred about the new observation
A.It proves the medical value of a plant leaf.
B.It shows a widespread behavior among orangutans.
C.It answers one of scientists’ questions about medicine.
D.It adds evidence to show the intelligence of orangutans.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Non-human Primates Seen Using Tools in the Wild
B.Orangutans Proved to Be the Most Intelligent Primate
C.A Project Observes Orangutans in Their Natural Habitat
D.An Orangutan Observed Applying Medicinal Plant to a Wound

Native to New Zealand, this sweet little bird is called the tūturiwhatu, or New Zealand dotterel, and though endangered, it has found a unique shelter where it can nest and feed in relative peace.
Relative, because it comes with a significant amount of noise pollution. It’s the Auckland Airport, and 4 pairs of dotterel s have been recorded in the green areas alongside the outer runways this year.
Even though human activities are on the whole the largest driver of species decline around the Earth, what can be an obstacle to one species can be a shelter to another, and in the case of the Auckland Airport, wildlife manager Lucy Hawley said the high fences keep out the bird’s invasive predators.
“This is very attractive to nesting dotterels and our air field’s become a real shelter for them,” Hawley told RZN.com. “These tiny little birds take absolutely no notice of the giant planes moving all around them and have no issues setting up home right beside the taxiways.”
Over the last ten years, Hawley has estimated that she and her groundskeepers have seen 80 dotterel s hatch on the taxiways of the country’s busiest airport. The parents typically arrive between November and December. Over time the airport has taken time to work with professional wildlife biologists who have banded some of the birds in order to track their movements and nesting behavior.
Concerning the dotterel, there may only be 2,500 of them left in the country following years of egg predation from invasive creatures like stoats. Fortunately, the ground-nesting bird poses no risk to aviation and can live alongside the planes in relative comfort.
Hawley and her team use stakes (篱笆桩) to mark the nesting sites which can be practically invisible among the grass blades. “We love doing our part to help this important species to breed,” she said.
12.Where do these New Zealand dotterels live
A.In a bird shelter. B.In a busy airport.
C.On a motorway. D.In an abandoned airport.
13.What can be learned from Hawley’s words
A.Dotterels have poor hearing.
B.Beautiful airfield is a big attraction to dotterels.
C.High fences are obstacles to dotterels’ natural enemies.
D.Dotterels are natural architects and have great nesting skill.
14.What do Hawley’s team do to protect the species
A.They ensure the safety of its nest. B.They help it build the nest and breed.
C.They move its nest to a nearby reserve. D.They track its possible invasive predators.
15.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Illegal hunting has pushed dotterels to extinction.
B.Dotterels are putting the airport in great potential danger.
C.Excessive human protection does no good to endangered animals.
D.Endangered dotterels and the busy airport coexist in relative harmony.

With busy schedules, we can often forget about ways to stay sustainable on campus. 16 So, here are some easy tips to be more eco-friendly on campus.
17 Whenever you head to stores or supermarkets, you will find that they sell reusable bags. But you are recommended to bring the ones you already own in your dorm, because it can help reduce the amount of bags accumulating in the corner of your dorm.
Bring a reusable water bottle. If you are someone who likes to drink water with your meal, consider bringing a reusable water bottle to the dining halls. All of the vending machines come, equipped with a little sign. 18 However, the Earth says otherwise with all of those non-biodegradable plastic cups filling landfills.
Take the stairs as much as possible. If you find yourself able to, take the stairs to your classroom and dorm. Not only does taking the stairs allow for some minimal yet mighty exercise, but it also reduces energy use from the elevator. 19
Turn off the lights in time. 20 Although you wake up too late, and you are in a rush to get to your class in the early morning, don’t mind taking that extra second to press the switch. Every time you turn off the lights, it means something to the Earth.
A.It says not to bring personal bottles.
B.Use one of the eco-friendly bags you have.
C.It is of great importance to conserve energy.
D.Purchase some reusable bags whenever possible.
E.Besides, we don’t know how to reduce our waste in many cases.
F.It allows others who need it more to get to their classes on time.
G.The reusable glass bottles can be used to hold some plants and flowers.

四、语法填空
Polar bears are being 36 (increase) threatened by the effects of climate change, but their 37 (disappear) could have far-reaching consequence. They are uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle, 38 temperatures can reach -40°C. One reason for this is that they have up to 11 centimeters of fat under their skin. Humans would 39 (consider) to be obese and would be likely to suffer 40 diabetes and heart disease. Yet the polar bear experiences no such consequences.
In 2014, scientists 41 (compare) the genetic structure of polar bears with 42 of their closest relatives from a warmer climate, the brown bears. This allowed them 43 (determine) the genes that enable polar bears to survive in one of the toughest environments on Earth. Polar bears may therefore be an important study model to understand heart disease in humans.
The medical 44 (benefit) of the polar bear certainly have their importance in our preservation efforts, 45 these should not be the only factors taken into consideration. Polar bears are smart and they have good problem-solving abilities. If climate change were to lead to their extinction, this would mean not only the loss of potential breakthroughs in human medicine, but more importantly, the extinction of a smart animal.

47.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Jennifer worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at the farmer's market. This is how they made their living. Jennifer often pretended the plants she tended were beautiful tulips, like Mrs. Talia’s prize flowers. “Foolish girl!” her mother scolded. “Flowers can't be eaten! Tend to the vegetables. That's our living.”
Jennifer knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Talia. She grew tulips and sold them to local flower shops. Every year she won first prize at the Tulip Festival. Other contestants whispered that Mrs. Talia used magic to grow her tulips. How else could she win first prize twenty years in a row
Jennifer envied Mrs. Talia. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Talia, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But tulips were expensive to start, and Jennifer could only dream about growing them.
One day, Jennifer visited Mrs. Talia to see her flowers. Mrs. Talia was inspecting her tulips when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Jennifer. Mrs. Talia shattered her daydream. “Spying on me again!”Mrs. Talia frowned. Jennifer took a deep breath and explained she came only to see her flowers, hoping to grow such beautiful tulips and win a prize at the festival like her.
“You! Win a prize growing flowers ”Mrs. Talia chuckled and told Jennifer the secret to growing prize tulips had been passed down to her from past generations of her family. Mrs. Talia patted her shoulder and said sticking to vegetables was a better choice for her. Mrs. Talia returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Jennifer’s face. Then she pulled up what looked like a weed. “What's that ” Jennifer asked. Mrs. Talia said it was only a shabby plant and then threw itover the fence into the field beside the garden.
Jennifer smiled and had an idea. She bowed farewell to Mrs. Talia and went out of the garden gate. Jennifer looked down at the discarded plant on the village path and glanced back. Mrs. Talia was busy minding her prize tulips. Jennifer quickly bent over and picked up the plant before rushing home.

As the prizes were announced, Jennifer’s flower won the hearts of all .Mrs. Talia’s mouth dropped open at the result and came to ask what her secret of planting flowers was.
