It is said that a new culture can always keep your eyes and your mind open. Now I am studying in Russia as 1 exchange student. I learn about it from my own experience.
One of 2 differences is about people’s way of life. One day, a Russian friend invited me to a well-known restaurant in Moscow. I 3 to try local food. After arriving there, I found nothing on the table but some small plates. To my greater surprise, on the plates there 4 only a few slices of tomatoes, nuts, and several piece of onions. 5 the dishes were simple, we drank a lot and I felt the passion (热情) from the bottom of his heart. In China, when we invite our friends or relatives, we always provide 6 with a big dinner with all kinds of dishes. We like to prepare 7 we can to show our friendliness.
8 Russian custom also surprises me greatly. As we know, it is 9 cold in winter there that it takes a lot of courage to just go outside. However, when winter comes, Russians enjoy 10 . They even take their kids outside to swim. Like their parents, Russian kids rub (揉擦) their bodies 11 snow before jumping into the water. The water is freezing cold, but they all play 12 in it! Sometimes they invite us to join them, however, we have to say no, because it is really difficult for us 13 it just like them!
I 14 a lot from the exchange visit and it’s been educational in many ways. 15 interesting the visit is!

I worked as a volunteer at a hospital at the age of sixteen. A year later, a little girl named Lisa lived in hospital because she had a very serious disease and she was dying. The doctor had done his best to help the girl but no medicine really worked. There was an only chance to save her life. It was a blood transfusion (输血) from her brother who was only six years old and two years older than the little girl. The little boy had the same disease before. Luckily, his body developed the antibodies (抗体) and the antibodies fought against the disease. The boy was saved.
The doctor talked to the boy about his sister and asked him if he agreed to give his blood to his sister. The little boy was worried about his sister. He took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I do.” During the blood transfusion, the little boy said nothing and lay in bed next to his sister. He looked at his sister and smiled. In the end, when he saw his sister’s face turned a little red. His smile disappeared and became afraid. He looked up at the doctor and asked, “Will I begin to die now ” The doctor understood his feelings and was touched. He said, “You are a brave child. You will not die because of this and your sister is saved because of you.”

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate. It’s OK to start smoking, before other people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home.

Is body language important and useful The answer is yes. Because it can help people understand us easily. When we are communicating with others, we use not only words but also body language. For example, we use facial expressions to show our feelings. We use smiles to mean that we are happy. We also use gestures such as shaking hands with each other to show we are friendly.
However, different countries have different body language. For example, people in China and Australia shake hands when they meet others while Frenchmen and Russians greet others with kisses. People from English-speaking countries do not like touching each other, but people in Puerto Rio like doing it. Therefore, if you touch someone from the UK, you should say sorry to him or her. If an American agrees with you, he will put his thumb (拇指) and forefinger (食指) into a circle. But in Brazil, people think it is rude. In many countries, “thumbs up” means agreement. But people in Australia used to think it was impolite to raise one’s thumbs up.
Therefore, when we use body language in a foreign country , we should make sure if it is polite to do so in that country.
33.According to the passage, we _______ to show we are friendly.

Being a place where you can’t speak the local language can be difficult for you to live. Is it possible for us to take a dictionary all the time Of course, no! It’s only natural to communicate through body language. Hands can show something easily, but their meanings are different in different places.
Trying to call someone to come to you can not be understood easily. Because it depends on where you are. The same gesture may mean very different things in different places. Westerners do it with a hooked (弯曲的) forefinger and a raised palm (手掌). Asians do it in an opposite way and they don’t like the westerner’s way to ask for coming. In their opinion, they often do this to call the dog. Instead, when calling someone to come, Asians turn the palm down and wave all fingers together, and this is how Western people tell someone to go away.
Even the simplest hand movement can cause cross-cultural problems. In the West, a thumb up has a good meaning and a thumb down a bad one. However, you might be surprised to know that in the Middle East, a thumb up has a negative meaning and a thumb down has no meaning at all.
Body language may be a natural and good choice when you can’t communicate in local language. Some simple movements, gestures or even a blink of your eye may work just fine. Even if you don’t understand the words at all, it is still funny and useful to try body language.
37.Which might cause bad feelings to an Asian person traveling in the West
A.Showing a thumb up to express something good.
B.Making a “peace” sign when his or her picture is taken.
C.Using a dictionary to speak to someone.
D.Calling Asians to come in the Western way.
38.What does the writer advise us to do when traveling in a new place
A.Try to use as much body language as possible.
B.Always remember to take a dictionary with you.
C.Body language is more preferred than the local language.
D.The local meanings of body language should be learnt earlier.
39.How does the writer feel about using gestures to communicate
A.He thinks it’s worrying. B.He’s angry about it.
C.He would like to use it. D.He thinks it’s simple to use.
40.What is the best title of this passage
A.The Bad Description of Travellers B.Same Body Language, Different Meanings
C.Strange Effects of Body Language D.Funny Cultures in the World
